I tend to dislike most stupid comedies, like Napoleon Dynamite.  my parents always tried to make me watch movies like that, Scary Movie, the 40 year Old Virgin etc with them, and it drives me nuts.  It's kind of funny/sad that my parents have seen more movies geared towards young people than I have, and I'm in the target demographic age-wise...

To be fair though 40 Year Old Virgin is a damn good comedy, with an interesting point to make about breaking up male groups. But then again I like most of the Apatow stable of comedies.

Fair enough.  I'm just rather picky about my comedies I suppose.

Well which ones do you like (curious and all)? What makes a comedy funny to others isn't always the same (duh) but maybe I've seen some of what you are into.

The whole notion of overrated/underrated is pretty specific to the responses given by the "critical" and sometimes the academic fields rather then merely an economic one. Thus many of the films here like Twilight aren't even relevant to the topic (i.e. it has a RT rating of 50%). Also....nearly all of the films here are made within the last 20 years which is problematic since none of them have had the time to be put into context of film history as a whole nor put under extensive critical scrutiny.

Anyways....getting back on topic, Id say Godfather is hugely overrated and altogether insignificant. On the other hand, while Nicholas Ray does indeed have large acclaim, I still feel his output is significantly underrated. Mainly thinking of Rebel Without a Cause & Bigger Than Life.

In general, I prefer epics over comedies.  That's just how I roll.

Underrated - Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

Overrated - Juno

I remember people telling me I was crazy for refusing to watch Juno. Everyone was raving about how good it was. I finally got around to watching it when I was extremely bored about two months ago. I don't see what all the fuss and awards were all about? It was mediocre at best.

My favorite movies tend to be things like LOTR, Braveheart, Gone With the Wind, Casablanca, Ben Hur, etc etc.

I am also a fan of musicals.  Speaking of musicals, I would add Chicago to my list of overrated movies, along with Moulin Rouge.

Great choices! Godak approves!

As far as musicals, the only one I'm enamored with is "The Producers".

Haha, yep. It was made back in 1968 or so, and had Gene Wilder. Good times.
