I need some help fighting the two drakes. I've got all my party gear back (whew - I read a few posts here about people who didn't). I'm at the point of walking into the big room after the merchant. The two drakes that spawn have wiped my party so many times I am soooooo frustrated.
I have a dual-wield rogue, a sword & shield warrior (Oghren) and two mages (Velanna and Anders). Both mages have Spirit Healer and lots of healing. Anders has a fair bit of damage.
This is the first place I've been, so the characters are all pretty low level (20, 21, I think my main is 22).
The battle usually plays out the same way. The drakes drop in, stun both rogue and warrior, and proceed to do them over. At some point a healing spell is cast. This seems to generate a lot of aggro because one of the drakes then peels off and goes after the mage. Said mage dies soon. Other mage has no mana left so never gets to revive the first mage. Meanwhile everyonme is reduced to white damage since no-one has any mana or stamina or potions (there is nowhere in the mine to replenish, the merchant doesn't sell any).
As far as I can see, the drakes resist everything, so there's no chance of crowd control. Well, apart from their's, of course - it seems that their frightening roar (I think) is not resistable. They have shedloads of hitpoints. The best I've done is get one of them down to around 20%.
Any hints, tips, tactics, whatever gratefully recieved.
I do have a save from before the mine so there is the option of going back to it and ignoring the mines for a few levels. However, will the monster levelling mean they will be just as mean later on?
TIA

One drake at a time.
Setup your mages well, Ignore combat spells, but heal heal heal.
(if ally/self health lower than 50% then cast heal/regenerate/lifeward/etc. Ditto rejuvenate for stamina).
Use all your mana for healing.
Warrior in front, Rogue backstabbing at the back.Should be a cakewalk really.
Edit : Just realized you meant those 'other' Drakes
Yeah, tricky battle that.
If you keep the mages behind the warrior/rogue they should be reasonably safe. Beware you don't position yourself on a 'landing zone'. It should not be that hard but if your mages get toasted you're doomed. I don't think I used any potions on hard...but later on got my ass handed to me in the marshes
I stayed near the entrance and they often landed far away so I could get some nice ranged damage in while they walked back to me.

I think you're going to have to reload an earlier save if you have no lyrium potions. Your mages are going to be busy. Have the mages cast lifeward on each other when they start getting hit, and reviving each other when they die. You'll need a lot of healing and stamina potions, as well, because eventually both mages will probably fall.
My PC is a really powerful sword and shield warrior, and she got through that fight by the skin of her teeth. Everyone else had fallen, and the drakes were at one-half and one-third health. I backed int a corner and slogged it out on a very long battle of attrition. Luckily, I had enough potions to do that. I also had second wind and a bunch of other useful stuff.
Oghren might be able to do it if you've respec'd him....

Hi,
If you are wondering if you're the only one that had problems: You're wrong.
I am sure I am now the title holder of 'most killed by the Twin Dragon Thralls'. There I would like to patent this unique approach of fighting those ***:
- Walk in room
- Get killed
- Quit game
- Uninstall.
I am very puzzled why all the previous quests were moderate and this one is impossible. And yes, to lower the difficulty to 'easy' is beneath me. Perhaps in another time/life.
By the way: Why are they called in the forum: "Drakes"? In my game they are called "Dragon Thrall"?

On my two Awakening playthroughs, I used my character (a tank rogue) and Sigrun (another tank rogue), plus Velanna and Anders/Nathaniel. I'm also around Level 30 when I do the Silverite Mine. It's a long fight, but not a particularly difficult one.
My strategy is to have one melee character each challenge a dragon. Then have the two other mages focus their attacks on one Dragon Thrall at a time to whittle down its life points. If either melee character gets Overwhelmed, then both Velanna and Anders will heal them.
I found the Thralls are also vulnerable to Cone of Cold. It doesn't stop for them long, mind you.

Doing this battle with an Orlesian as the first of the three main quests is rough... very rough.
It helps a lot to have both an Assassin (mark of death) and a mage with the vulnerability hex spell to take down the thralls as fast as possible. Bombs are also a great help in here. Also, cheesing Force Field helps a lot. The thralls usually went after my mage (who was the one doing most damage), so the minute one of them when after the mage, activate FF and let the other dish the hurt.
At any rate, this battle always gives me a headache and I get a huge sense of relief once it's done.

Have a mage strictly for healing with a tactic like this perhaps:
Ally health >=75 = heal
Ally health >=50 = heal
Self health >=75 = heal
Ally health >=50 = group heal
Etc.
If you have force field you can always use that on a thrall or a teammate near death.
Cone of cold is also good.
A dex archer with repeater gloves/fingers of the nimble with aim, accuracy and suppresing fire...and if a bard also song of courage will make it pretty easy. A warrior archer with spirit warrior is also deadly.
Having a tank use taunt is of course a good idea if you mages are being attacked.
A 2H with indomitable is also nice since he wouldn't be stunned and a rogue with mark of death will help you quite a bit as well.

Are you playing on Nightmare? Lower the difficulty.
Otherwise, yeah the advice is good. I died a couple of times. Eventually what worked for me was my main tank taking on one of the Drakes at one corner of the room, surviving by drinking healing pots. The rest of the party took on the other, locking it down with crushing prison/petrify/cone of cold etc and smacking it. It went down without too much trouble, required a bit of micromanagement though.

I've only beaten them on Normal so far, so take this with a grain of salt. I third cone of cold (or paralysis) and also used Ser Pounce-a-Lot often. (Pounce is your friend because he can rez more than one character at a time without using mana.) Not having potions is a killer because the mages use mana like crazy, so also what errant_knight said. If you stay near the door the drakes will periodically fly off and give you a breather so you can recharge. Cone of cold them in the face when they run up, position your rogue and chip away. Good luck!
