Dont forget the part where Sten goes to face Duncan, but right as he's about to land the finishing blow, Alistair screams in a whuny voice "NO! I NEED HIM!" and cuts off Sten's hand, allowing the much weaker Duncan to finish him off.

The darkspawn are not tainted people like some kind of zombies, this is in fact what happens:
"The darkspawn take many prisoners. While male prisoners eventually die, females face a fate far worse. They undergo a horrific transformation and become broodmothers. Each of these creatures is capable of producing thousands of darkspawn during their lives and each different race produces a different type of darkspawn. Humans produce Hurlocks, dwarves produce Genlocks, elves produce shrieks, and qunari produce ogres."

You beat me to it. Human FEMALES, Dwarven FEMALES, Elven FEMALES, and Qunari FEMALES DO sometimes become Darkspawn in the form of Broodmothers.
Otherwise the OP is correct.

skimming through the forums and wiki to learn more about darkspawn, came across this thread, looked into it on wiki and found a page on it. so i posted it as the some replies were a bit confused i put it in laymen's terms, i'm helpful.
