I don't recall, but I guess he must be. He even spoke the warden oath. It would have been weird and inappropriate if he weren't a warden.Gentleman Jack wrote...
I was devistated It hit me like wow but what hit me even harder was the fact that not even a grey warden the seneschal was incharge of the joining or am I mistaken is he a warden. cause in his line he says there is only one grey warden very confused.

You don't really need a SnB tank for anything in Awakening, and Justice fills that role later anyway.HaloKT wrote...
The problem I had is that they load you up ith Rogues and Mages and your only tank dies right before the game really starts. Very, very annoying for those who don't play SnB Warriors
I was more annoyed cause I was looking forward to the master/apprentice relationship with her only to see it end 1hr into the game...

The seneschal is not a GW. When you ask him about what Kristoff found, he said he didn't hear very much about it as the GW's keep their own counsel. He also said the Joining was so important as their was only one known active Warden in Ferelden (since if Alistair and Loghain are alive they are either a wandering drunk or king and leaving for Orlais) and that's you.
If Alistair isn't dead/drunk or king, he should be a Warden. That version of him is missing with no explanation.
Varel was entrusted with some Warden secrets, including the Joining ritual, but he isn't a Warden himself. He was chosen because of his popularity with the people of the arling, since he opposed Howe's methods and worked to undermine him as best he could.
Sword and Shield tanks really are pointless in Awakening. I even respecced Justice to 2-hander because I couldn't get anyone to die if I tried (this is on Hard and I usually sweat Origins on Normal).
Mhairi would have been an interesting companion because she probably would have really sucked up to the PC (especially a HN). She also viewed the Wardens as great heroes and it might have been fun to see how she handled some of the less savoury aspects of Wardening.

I think that the Seneschal meant that each Warden keeps his own counsel meaning that they are very secretive even within the Wardens. Wasn't he also an Orlesian Warden? The main character is the only one active in Ferelden, but not in Orlais.Sarah1281 wrote...

Varel was in the employ of Arl Howe, who hated him and kept bumping him down. Eventually, Varel started working against Howe in secret. According to his Codex, he was chosen for his position because the people of Amaranthine like him and he's trustworthy. He's neither a Warden nor an Orlesian.

Hmm have to check that out then. If that's the case then why does he know how to lead the Joining, or even know about it at all? He even recited the oath as if he were one of those "brothers and sisters". :|SurelyForth wrote...

I assume it's the compromise being made by the First Warden to ensure that the "experiment" of the Wardens having their own lands is more successful. By having someone like Varel, a Fereldan who is trusted by the people of the arling, it sort of eases the transition a bit.
His recitation of the Oath is weird, but he's the mouthpiece for the PC at that point (like he is when you talk to the King/Queen).

Presiding over the Joining has no affect on how well the Wardens manage their lands, however. He can certainly take care of the keep and be a mediator between the Wardens and the people but the Joining is totally irrelevant to that.SurelyForth wrote...

As for being the mouthpiece, well, there's that Warden who handles trade. Why couldn't she do the Joining? And to think she's lived long enough with the taint (assuming she took it young), she must have SOME Warden experience. More than the PC and surely more than the Seneschal.

Well, no, but I imagine that it's a last resort at that point, since all the other Wardens are dead. He was probably told how to do the Joining but no one ever thought it would come to that. However, the situation at Vigil's Keep requires immediate action and he's the only one in a position to do it (since the PC can't speak). This would actually have been a good time for a Loghain or Warden Alistair cameo.
I also don't think Woolsey is a true Warden, she just works for the Wardens in an administrative role. Her doing the Joining ritual would be about the same as Varel only minus the cool voice (she might not even know the details, since she was kept out during the ceremony).

come on the whole ritual was a joke,a non grey warden does the ritual (why not the pc character?) and i didnt expect it too but it didnt hit me like that,i didnt watch any character trailers so i didnt knew who joined me anyway.
Who else could have spoken the words? The PC is silent and they lack impact if you just click a bunch of text. Varel made a decent substitute for having someone else speak the words as he was the seneschal and had proven to be trustworthy they let him in on some Warden secrets and he IS in charge of the Warden's keep. I thought it was okay. What made it a joke was Oghren burping and asking for more right before Mhairi buys the farm. Very tacky and completely broke immersion.

I didnt' see any trailers, didn't know any of the story at all since I stayed away from the forums, but I still knew she'd die the moment the other two survived. I was pissed off for the above reason more than anything. There hadn't been enough time to care about her on any level.

What I hated about it the most was that it meant no female NPCs in the party for a while, perhaps a long while depending on which order you did things. They should have killed off one of the males (preferably Oghren).

I appreciated the Red Shirt aspect of her demise, but you're right. Velanna is horrible. I want her dead. (dead for dullness more than anything else - far worse than over-cuteness, even) Sigrun has to hold up our banner of female Wardenness, I guess. She does it very well, but it would be nice to have a woman who is neither a monstrous shrew or overdosing on sugar.

Mhairi just didn't get a proper service, the music wasn't there, the dark and mysterious feeling was absent, and your other candidates were Oghren (obviously would not die) and a charming apostate, reminiscent of Alistair. Chances of all surviving? Little, not to mention how eye-rolling a moment it would have been if they had. Perhaps as eye-rolling as it's been to witness each and every recruit I've picked up through the campaign survive their Joining.
On an unrelated note: Did anyone else feel that Awakening didn't do the joining ritual justice? It's like: "Oh, another one Commander? Right then; here's your darkspawn blood, and try to make sure you fall onto that little bedroll behind you, when you inevitably lose consciousness and hit the floor, yet survive. NEXT!"
