Is this actually useful? I tried it because it sounded awesome, but I've been left feeling underwhelmed.

Basically, I dislike how whenever I want to cast a spell, I have to stop, sheath my sword, cast the spell, and then take my sword back out. It makes a spell that would normally cast in about one second take five seconds instead, meaning that there's almost no reason to even cast spells (besides arcane blast, which hits for less than my melee attacks so there's little point there).

The only two spells I've discovered thusfar that can be cast without putting the weapon away are Heal and Arcane blast. Being able to spot heal myself is fine and dandy and all, but since I'm not exactly tanking things I rarely if ever need heals and potions serve the purpose just as well. Arcane blast, as mentioned above, hits for less than my autoattack melee swings and takes about as long to do damage, so there's no real purpose to it.

I'm doing decent damage, but it's just annoying because I don't feel like a mage-warrior hybrid so much as I feel like a warrior who can heal himself at a large expense to mana.
Am I doing something wrong? Should I be using a one handed weapon instead, or even dual wielding? Or is the idea to just autoattack for damage and use your spells for CC and spot-healing where needed?

The main benefit is making your mage much more durable. Being able to wear heavy armor + Shimmering Shield (+ Rock Armor) makes you a tough nut to crack.

As for the problems, you can't effectively cast and fight at the same time. Cambat Magic fatigue penalty and the weapons having to be sheated make casting very tricky. I'd suggest keeping Combat Magic off and using a staff while casting. Once your mana is gone, turn on Combat Magic, switch to your melee weapon set and go kick some arse.

Personally, when I'm through with my mana, I turn on CM, Death Syphon (to regen mana), and Rock Armor. I smack things while DS recharges my mana. When I've got some stored up, I drop the modes and go caster again.

I just don't really see the point of only using something when you're out of mana, especially when the game throws over 9000 mana potions at you if you have herbalism.

I stick with more buffing and healing spells, usually using an area effect offensive spell as the enemies come charging in (before melee fighting ensues).

Well, you should choose your spells to complement the specialization. And there are a lot more spells you can use that don't require you to sheathe weapons. Crushing Prison, force field, and all of the glyphs are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Also, you can chain cast spells after putting your weapon away and you won't take them out again till you're done. E.G. if I need to take out something with magic really quick I use the ice spell first, then queue up arcane blast, lightning, etc. and keep doing that till I don't want to use magic anymore.

I have the Crushing Prison stuff, but I generally save that for elite mobs. It's just annoying when I'm fighting big groups of little critters that I can't just pop off a quick chain lightning or whatnot. Then again, that'd be a bit overpowered, so I can see why they made it this way.

Im playing AW - and loving it. I dont really care if its the right way of playing a mage, but jumping in to battle in Juggernaut armor and slaying foes with steel and majek gives me an all fussy feeling...

You could say it turns me on... just a little. But im weird like that.

Just a heads up to other AW out there, I was just playing around and discovered that items with + stamina (and there is lots of plate with it) actually gives AW's mana instead. I boosted my mana pool by a hundred points just from stuff I found in stores (and random crap I had on me) I wish I had realized it sooner.
Oh, and to the one handed or two handed thing, there is a pretty beastly onehander that is AW only, so find a shield with a low fatigue cost :)

According to the number crunchers out there, Arcane Warrior + Blood Mage is the most powerful spec by far.

You can solo dragons with it.

I agree with ngen, love my AW!

I run into armies unfazed, I start combat off with cone of cold, or maybe a paralyze on their caster? I slash at foes with a dragon slayer great sword, should they get past my rock armor and juggernaut plate I simply use Drain Life to top myself back up in life. There is enough mana there, even with CM penelties to cast about 3-5 spells and I'm only level 10. There are many more spells down the road that will be great, mass paralayze anyone? Sure it takes up alot of previous mana I might have, but it will still leave me with enough for drain life or another single paralyze should the need arise.

I can relate that I don't much care for my AW sheathing her great sword just to cast a Drain, I would of preferred if the animation just had her use her off hand briefly to cast. I don't mind the time sink for it, as you mention to be able to quickly cast all these spells while using a weapon WOULD be OP, so it's fine by me that it's slower.

One great solution for the seathing problem? Use a staff when not in melee, then toggle weapons with to your sword! Works wonder, and powergaming wise, it makes sense, as staffs tend to give magic bonuses.

Can anyone tell me where I can find the AW sword?

One way to get over the seathing delay is to just use a staff when out of melee, the switch weapons with / when in melee. Works wonders, espeically since staffs usually ave magic bonuses.

Can anyone spoil me and tell me where to find the AW sword?

Okay now your just spamming that, while it is a build not everyone wants to be a blood mage and throwing it out as the universal solution to everything connected with arcane mages is kinda silly..

I do not recall him saying that but ill take your word for it.

To post that into so many multidude of threads about arcane warrior that the blood magic build is the best source of information of the arcane warrior is sorta I dunno what to say to that actually.

Blood Magic just does not fit in with my roleplay style as a Lawful Good Mage it would be out of character and I fear that sentiment comes with me on the forums as I caught myself almost blurting out the moral implications using game lore logic.

Also I saw what jowen did that prison guard he mentally warped his mind I take back not killing him now just because of that...
