I just patched as well, on XP. The launcher starts up and you hear the click when play is pressed the first time, but the game itself isn't launching.

Install this version of Microsoft Visual C++: www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx . Worked for me.

ive read elsewhere its only the shortcut that is broken
