Hey, I did a little experimenting. I compared all four shotguns at point blank range against a heavy mech's shields, and recorded the time taken to destroy the shields.

Shotgun Damage Comparison (Insanity) (HD) 1:33

Enjoy  The results may surprise some. They surprised me, at least.

Note that the shotguns have different damage multipliers against shields and other defenses. To be precise:

             Shields/barriers, Armor
Katana        1.50,          1.00
Scimitar       1.50,          1.00
Eviscerator    1.25,          1.25
Claymore       1.25,          1.25

So, a similar test against armor would skew the results in favor of Eviscerator and Claymore.

I don't have much to say, 'cos I rarely use shotguns ..

Isn't the eviscerator meant to have a longer range? Though I guess that won't mean much to a vanguard ...

Thanks again for the testing, interesting results.

Furthers my personal support for the Scimitar.

Oh forgot to mention, each weapon is fired my manually tapping the fire button, not pressing it down.

Well, thank you cruc1al, even though I've never used the shotgun before in the game, I'll keep this in mind.

Would this change what you would use on squad members or no?

While interesting, I'm not sure how useful it is in practice without any melee.

I wanted to compare the pure DPS. Whether you melee or not depends on the situation a lot, and the gun you're using, and if you even like to melee. Also does melee do enough damage to make it worth the time you lose not shooting? I'm not sure, I might test that out.

The melee is faster than some of the shotguns' delay, especially if used as a finisher. Also, I wonder what the Claymore's time would be if you used the reload trick with it.

I've never used the reload trick. I consider it cheating :P

Claymore without the reload trick is probably the worst shotgun in the game. You actually need to use it to make Claymore comparable to Evi and Scimitar,

Uh, in the video Claymore beat both Evi and Katana, and against armor the gap between Katana and Claymore should be even larger. It might even beat scimitar.

Yeah, but there is more to guns than just damage. Without reload trick Claymore fires every 2(.5?) seconds, with reload trick it is down to 1.5, that makes it very simillar to Evi, slightly more damage, but slower fire rate.
And in real game Claymore without reload trick is worse than both Scimitar and Evi, with the reload trick it gets pretty much the same results overall.

Hmm, if in the real game you fire as fast as you do in that video, the claymore beats Evi by a small fraction. What exactly are you suggesting is the difference between that and real game? Plus even if they were exactly equal in that video, the claymore does more damage per shot so it can insta kill opponents that Evi can't

Take a group of 3 standard foes, with Scimitar all you need is one clip and few melee attacks, with Evi it is shot+melee for each, with Claymore it is 3 shots, but because it is so slow without the reload trick, you would see a ton of difference and you would take more damage since it would take longer to kill them. Evis shoots every 1.25 seconds (I think) and you can easily put 1 melee between shots, Claymore with reload trick fires every 1.5 seconds, that makes the two virtually the same.

while the shotgun damage comparison was helpful it really only confirms what i know...

HOWEVER, i saw your heavy pistol and smg comparisons on your youtube and those were very enlightening (the HP one showed they are not terribly different and predator is viable if you prefer the ammo capacity and the smg comparison was just plain amusing i thought)

The result should be exactly the same against barriers because they get the same damage modifiers as shields do.

I might do one later for the heavy mech armor.

you are right, barrier would be exactly the same as shields, so lets see armor

I like it a lot actually. Even against armor (see my sig). I did the whole latter half of the game with it.

Also, sinosleep did a comparison video of the shotguns vs. armor. It includes melee though.

The scimitar stripped the armor in a single shot and a health only enemy is basically dead thanks to biotics, so even though it appears that the scim performed the worst it actually performed the best in Sinosleeps test.
