^Yeah this.
ME1 ended off pretty triumphantly. The Reapers were a mysterious enemy, but we were united and ready to face them. This was impression we were left with after Anderson's speech anyway.
If anything, ME2's intro served to break all that by throwing in a new implacable enemy in the Collectors. Who were they, did they have any connection to the Reapers - all things we had to learn slowly as the plot progressed. Also, players get to see Cerberus, previously the shady, one-dimensional side-villians in a new light, again, adding more complexity and richness to overall story. ME2 had its faults, but in terms of it's value to the trilogy, it gave us a view of the MEU beyond that of just a soldier in the human Alliance.
The trouble with all the ME comics is the lack of attention to detail in favor of sensationalism. They're all riddled with flaws if you try to read them beyond the most basic level. IMO they weren't really written to be serious exposition, so I'd just overlook their smaller plot points and just retain the biggest ones. (eg: after Shepard died, Liara made sure Shep's body went to the shifty Cerberus dudes instead of the creepy Collector dudes. Also, Aria punched a Collector once for being creepy. Done. Redemption and Incursion in 2 lines.)
Wait, so Shepard was killed..Normandy destoryed....but Why?
