Ok. Arcane warriors (as most people know) can replace strength with magic to equip heavier armor/weapons. This include the crossbows (wich require strength instead of dexterity).

Now, does anyone else beside me prefers to use the x-bows instead of staves for the arcane warrior to attack from a distance when mana runs out?

I know the staff has very high armor-penetration, but even with that... The x-bow seems to have a little more "punch".

Opinions?:wizard:

In two run-throughs I have yet to unlock arcane warrior as a specialization. I know this is supposed to be spoiler free, but can anyone tell me where/how to unlock it?

On the XBox/PS3 dexterity based weapons are probably still broken. It's fixed on the PC.

And why would you attack from a distance with an Arcane Warrior? They are the best class in the game at soaking up damage. Oh, and without any real spoilers, you unlock Arcane Warrior somewhere in the Elven Ruins. Look around carefully.

To help keep things spoiler free in here, click me to learn how to unlock specializations :P

EDIT: I suppose this is a spoiler forum, so that was un-needed but its there for you, regardless lol

For my arcane warrior, my preference is to go with a staff as my secondary weapon. I do this primarily because I swap to it when activating my buffs (I chose a staff with a good bonus to spell power) and for casting certain spells (the staff that I'm using is Final Reason so when I absolutely must BBQ everything in sight, I swap to it).

I also swap to it to avoid the delay inherent in sheathing my weapons before casting quite a few spells (and yes, I could use a mod for this purpose but I do like the idea of swapping to the staff anyway for the spell power boost).

By the way the staff doesn't miss... (missing with a crossbow is bad for health, firing speed is so low you wanna die each time you miss >.>).

With the broken crossbow, the only build I see with it is a support spirit warrior/guardian/champion Con/Will (the fade burst is will based and the guardian's skills are all con based, and the spirit warrior has the hell of an armor penetration XD).

Other than that well... the fire in the camp can always use extra wood...

Staff is boosted by Staff Mastery too, which can be amazing. However, not everyone get that talent... in fact, it + Arcane Mastery are pretty weak unless you just have enough spells already.

I am a BIG fan of Staff Mastery. I have had some very high damage numbers from Staff Attacks. Combining +Elemental Gear +Spell Wisp + Spell Might with Affliction Hex/Vulnerabilty Hex. Not 50 to 60, but 130+ dmg per staff attack! And that was in Orgins!

Staff since the stat bonuses come in handy as well if u need that exstra dam or mana regen, i personally got 1 in my 2nd weapon slot, but i rarely use it, sword and board all the way, since when u get the spellweaver sword, u don't need anything else!!

I think someone mentioned: "Don't bother with DPS as Arcane Warrior, your Staff with Staff Mastery deals more damage." That makes me sad :/

last time I checked xboxs still didn't get their DEX bonus, or any stat bonus, so xbows are worse than everything else.

@Auraofmana.

Who cares??? just play your own way, could't care less if my sword does 1 or 5 points less damage then the staff, the point that i can survive hordes of enemies an normal mage can't is all i need, couse if u go AW only to use staffs the whole time, i think its quite a wasted effort.

Not true. Melee attack deals more damage than a staff with Staff Mastery, but Staff Mastery doesn't demolish your mana, doesn't require weapon switching when casting spells, and improves your spellpower. That allows you to output more damage with a staff.

^

I have been able to get hits for 150+ using a staff in Origins. And it auto hits. All about stacking hexes and elemental damage boosting gear and spellpower boosting with Spell Might/Spell Wisp. Even regular hits of 80-90 without hexes.

Its all about playstyle, i adapt to the fact that sheathing weapons might cost a second or so, so i don't see it as a problem, and as i said before, i don't care much about small things like what weapon does the most damage in 1 hit, as long as my enemies die, i'm content. but i'll not change to a totally different style just couse 1 does more damage in 1.5 second then the other....

Does anyone know exactly how attack and damage is treated with crossbows in PC 1.03?

As far as I know (from what I have tested), crossbow dmg are not affected by any stat, str nor dex (talents are working fine though).

Attack is working normally, 0.5/str + 0.5/dex, like swords or bows.

^yep, it is a known bug. Been a known bug for a long time. And it is a supereasy fix. Just changing one field in a 2da. Not sure why Bio never patched it.

Yeah, but OP is asking which weapon deals more damage.

Yeah - I want to know which weapon does more damage as well? I am hooked on my evil Arcane Warrior using sword & shield (the lightning rune does make his face glow in a nice intimidating way!), and although it's great having those select non-sheathing spells at hand while I'm smashing the enemy, it would be nice to know if I can use a staff to get more damage on bosses?

Does anyone have any favourite armour/charms for adding damage??

Why go with a cross bow do the urn of sacred ashes and the Spellweaver sword it acts as a channeling weapon just as a staff so cast times are reduced and its arcane warrior only i think its awesome Arcane warriors are the best Rock armor arcane sheild and Silver or higher armor and your no longer a tank but a Battleship that can swing blades heal allys cast infernos.
