Actually the best way of making Oghren change is by having your Warden do the Ultimate Sacrifice, while Oghren has a high approval of you. This will make him realize the flaws in his way of life, make him look up Felsi, marry her (At least how I remember it), and shed a tear and name his first born after his friend which changed his life... That epilogue slide made me look at Oghren a whole new way.

When I got that epilogue card, it made me tear up a little lol I agree with what a lotof Bioware interviews said that most did Orzzamar last, and didn't really get to know Oghren. My last playthrough, I did it first, and got to know him.

Are there any Oghren appreciation topics around here? :P

On topic, I wish I could have unlocked Velanna's personal quest. After awhile, I ran out of stuff to give her to get her approval up... Oh well.

Velanna is the first DA companion that I could not come up with a good in-game reason to recruit. I did anyway, but my character was not happy about it.

I started off disliking her, but after getting her approval up and doing her personal quest, my dislike was upgraded to apathy. In a full game, with further character development, she might have become likable, but as it is, I feel very meh towards her.

At least theres a reason why she's a b*tch. Morrigan hasn't got any reason at all.

I think being raised by Flemeth is enough to turn anyone unpleasant.

I figured she was strong or else she wouldn't have been so effective at terrorizing the woods and she was more deeply motivated than most of your companions to kill darkspawn since she was looking for her sister. Now Sten took me a while to figure out why I was going to recruit him. Besides, of course, Morrigan, Leliana, and Alistair agreeing on something for the first time ever and practically hitting me over the head with 'new party member.'

I've always gone with "Well, he seems remorseful. I'll give him a second chance."

I think they just took what they thought people liked about Morrigan and made a half-ass attempt at making a 2.0 version of her

I also though she has a  "Morrigan" type personality.

Overall I like her. I didn't finish the game yet but she has become a staple of my party.

i think valenna is like she is because she is an Ice Queen and to quote evolution 'she needs a good humping'

She is basically like Morrigan in that she has a tough shell and a soft centre with one crucial difference... The writer's and/or devs(I don't know who's to blame) decided to remove almost all dialogue with companions so that you only get the slightest glimpse of her softer side.

Moorrigan was good because even though she seemed callous and uncaring, you could get to know her well enough to know that there was more. In Awakening, they thought "Screw it, too much development cost" and left Velanna terribly undeveloped.

I don't think she was a horrible character. I've yet to see a horrible character from Bioware.

*Glares at Oghren*

By far THE most shallow character in the game. I can't believe we're supposed to WANT to help him with his relationship with Felsi. He does NOT deserve to be a father. He's just going to ruin his kid's life. Posted Image

Especially since we  helped hook him up with her in the first place.

I liked him in Origins, but found him lacking depth in Awakening.

So, do you think he drinks and makes fart jokes just for the heck of it? He was once a man of some status, and the sudden departure of his wife just broke him. His dignity, his honour, and people's respect of him, all collapsed. And these things mean everything in a dwarven society.

He was nothing but a broken man before the Warden shows up. When his false hope that once Branka comes back, things would get back to place is once again broken before his eyes as he saw Branka gone mad/had to be slained in his own hands, I was thinking, man, he must feel like hell of a loser! Some people just gotta kill themselves over this.  By then, he truly has no place to go and his life is completely devoid of purpose. So he follows the Warden.

And it's the Warden that supposes to give him purposes in life. It's the warden that proves to him he's somebody. He could try to become a whole person because of his time with the warden. All these sound pretty deep to me, don't you think?[/quote]

In Origins yes, not so much in the expansion

I was getting to like him quite a bit in Origins. In this one, he just seems... it's hard to explain. Like a movie sequel character that becomes self-referential - not quite as real. But it's true that I didn't keep him around long enough to see if he grows & mans up here, too. So... does he? I mean, do you get anything really heartfelt from him if you keep at it?

The best way to get a glimpse of this softer side is listening to the random party dialog between her and Howe... how she doesn't know how to react to him complementing her on her looks at first, then thanking him. I found it touching.

I didn't think I'd ever like Howe. But now that he has admitted that his father brought his doom on himself, I find that I like him. Maybe my favorite character now along with Velanna.

I was hoping she'd show more of that Morrigan inside, too, but I haven't seen it. Her fighting voice annoyed me enough to replace her with Anders, though I wanted her in at least one party.  The other thing is - she looks like a Floridian Trophy Wife to me - slightly shrewish because the neighbor's cupboards are hand painted & hers aren't.  That sort of thing. Like she wants a newer bmw.  Morrigan had a cute, bright face. This one looks mad because her tennis game is off.

Probably won't know until another play through, due to gift glichs and the fact he wasn't in my party when I went to the fade.

Agreed. I so regret not killing her when I had the chance. I would have rather had an empty spot in my party if it was her as a 4'th member or none. Heck that zombie Justice was better than her. She was basically a failed attempt at trying to make an elven Morrigan type character.

And i was thinking of asking why we dont get a romance option with her, but then again if she as horrible as people say well, i thought Leliana was horrible but i had to see her romance path and seemed only female you could be romantic with as same gender without mods, but she seriously drove my nerves with the way she talked, and ooften babbled like she was somewhere out in deeper space unaware that people was nearby.

Guess by the sound of things i am not gonna like Velanna as much as id hoped for she looked like a interesting character in the Vid.

Oh - I thought Leliana was pretty annoying, but at least, you can feel she's a good friend to your character, male or female, & she's nice. (too nice sometimes) She has positives. So far, I've seen nothing pleasant about Velanna (and I love elves generally, so I have a pro-elf bias going in) - the nicest she is would be when the sexy guy says she's pretty.

More than personality though - and this is a spoiler I guess - if you DO kill her, does that mean the Dalish have a better epilogue post game? (concerning the little kid especially) Basically, the miserable cow gets her own people in trouble. I'd be tempted to kill her, for the same reasons I was quite happy to kill Loghain. Actually - more. At least, he had some point to his madness. She just seems petty.

And if you don't recruit her, would that matter in the final battle?

The only way anyone could know what Velanna was doing was if the one soldier who escaped right before you met her spread the word. We should have gotten a chance to kill him for the greater good.

I didn't recruit her and there was nothing about Dalish (either her or her people) in my epilogue

As good a reason as any not to recruit her! That ending was really dismal, I thought. And you'd be spared her voice! Thanks!

Oh, yes - and btw! Has anyone noticed that, if you are playing an elf - City Elf, Dalish or elven mage, Sigrun will tell Velanna she's the only elf she's known or liked, or something like that? LIKE I didn't despise her enough already! Now the scabby old bat is endearing herself to the companions I actually do like!

Did they really think everyone would play a human? That seems like the kind of thing you'd get in an edit.

Unfortuneately it seems "party banter" is the only conversation you really get to know the companions by. The new system is epic fail (at least for me) it felt like shallow "office party" talk where you are the new guy and don't know anyone.

If she appealed to you in the video, then she'll appeal to you in the game. That's pretty much how she is.

To be fair, while she was too much of a loose canon for my warden to want to recruit her, her talents were missed. She's a very good offensive mage. Er, no pun intended.... ;)

...

PERFECT description... you win cake!

In Velanna's defence... she actually gets alot less crazy - it is best to regard her as a deeply traumatised girl who simply needs a friend.

Her dialogue with Sigrun is nice, and she has the *only* romance in the game - with Nathaniel! It is kinda sweet, and almost a replay of the main PC and Morrigan...

Of course... boys are always more readily forgiving of nasty girls in skimpy clothes... Posted Image
