o.k. with everything on full i just booted up the game again running the techpower gpu thingy in the background. readings are as follows at the point of crash (i set all to show highest reading and goes as follows like it is ont he program) :
gpu core clock: 600 mhz
gpu memory clock: 900 mhz
gpu temperature: 91.0 (all in degrees c)
pcb temp: 73
gpu temp: 83.5
pcb: 73
fan speed 41%
fan speed: 5414 rpm

those stats mean nothing to me as i don't know what normal is. heh.

Those temps are ok.  Shouldn't be causing the crash.  On to the dual core issue. Has anyone tried changing the processor affinity and running the game on one core only?

I am having a similar issue. DA runs for 2-5 mins and then freezes up. CNTRL-ALT-DELETE and I can get it to run for 2-5 mins and repeat freeze. I read it was having trouble on 64-bit os systems so am running it on 32-bit os.

Start the game and then open the task manager and under processes navigate to daorigins.exe.

Right click and Select Set Affinity.  In the menu unselect one of the cores.

High temps on graphic cards usuallly show up as corrupt textures, flickering and tearing. So if you're getting any of those the first culprit could be overheating. Depending on your graphics card the upper limit varies, however anything above 90C is not good.

A couple of things to try if you're crashing a lot:

In game, turn off everything under Options - Online. This has helped in some cases.

If you have non-microsoft driver for your soundcard (ie. windows had drivers installed automatically but you upgraded to manufacturers drivers) uninstall them and let windows use the default ones.

Also you might want to update your BIOS but I really don't recommend doing that unless you're abolutely sure you know what you're doing. This is not recommened for novices as a failed update can kill your motherboard.

Personally I think that all these problems people have with crashing stem from several different sources - mine got resolved by doing the steps I describe above. Before I was crashing every 15mins, now I've played about 20 hours without a single crash.

That's great.  "Wishing you luck"  .  If it does work then here is a program ( kinda complex but easy enough to get done what you need ) to automatically set the affinity.

http://www.bitsum.com/prolasso.php

This will allow you to load up and play without having to tab out everytime.  You'll just have to keep that program running in the background.

I think i am going to stay with the tabbing out to set it manually. that way i won't forget how to do it... hopefully. chuckles.

Its definitely not heat in my case. Just for fun I cleaned everything out, temp of the gpu's are 70 and 69 respectively. It froze this time in my first 5 minutes of play. Sometimes its good for an hour, once it died in the title screen.

Lets hope they work this one out, I'll putz with the core for the hell of it too, why not...... (though can't say that has EVER been an issue).

Have now played over 10 min with no problems ... Should have guessed the dual core was the problem. NWN had the same issue, but I thought it was an archaic issue. Will keep everyone posted of any other problems, but is all good so far for me!

I switched to one core, crashed the same way in the first 5 mins.

I could play 10 mins before, sometimes up to an hour, so don't count your fix yet.

Sorry to hear.  Reading back at your post it looks like yours is something different.  Can you post your full specs, driver versions here please?  Also, have you tried disabling SLI and running the game?

Turning off SLI is the first thing I tried, same issue.

Win XP fully updated.
The 191.07 nvidia drivers

Funny thing is the game plays GREAT, no lag etc, it will just at any point decide to show corrupt looking graphics followed by a hard freeze.  I also note that my saves do not show a screen shot but either are blank or random colors.

Edit: I should say SOME of my saves, others do show a proper screen shot.

Hmm... Have you tried the beta 195.39 drivers? They state improved performance with DAO and over 200 bug fixes. Might be worth a shot. You can find them here:

EDIT:
BTW. I am running them on my Windows 7 build.

I've encountered the crash only on my second character - a dalish elf - after the second mirror sequence. Without fail, within 30 seconds of entering one area of the map, the game crashes; if sound is turned on, the whole PC goes down, with sound off the game just goes to desktop. My human character has had no problems with any crashes so far, even through the DLC.

Just to reiterate ...

For AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+

NVIDIA GeForce

Start the game

Then ...

In Task Manager go to Processes and find daorigins.exe, right click and select Set Affinity and leave only one CPU active.

CPU now running at 50%.

Dateranoth rocks!

I have advanced further in the last half hour than I have the last day and a half.

Good to hear.  Now if we could just get some mods in here to start stickying the fixes we've found, more and more people could play.

I got mine to work pretty well, I just disabled all the Collectors Edition content and started from a fresh save. No black screens or lock ups so far.

I take the beta drivers didn't help either?  Any other details on the crash? Is it straight to desktop or does it actually freeze and you have to shut down?  Any sound looping?
