No Alistair at my side, no romances, no fun. This expansion was, to say the least, very disappointing. It must have been done in haste. Origins is one of the best RPG's I've ever played, repeatedly. I had high hopes and anticipation for awakening. I can't help but feel cheated. Whatever builds the bank roll.

To be fair, they did give out this information before release so that we'd make a more informed purchase.

I didn't buy the expansion because I thought the lack of old companions, and the shortness of the game would prevent me from enjoying it. I got it as a gift, and I thought it was an entertaining if somewhat...empty game.

p.s: I am sorry you didn't like the game.

I have not got it yet, and based on the many bad comments. I most likely won't.

I sincerely hope you won't purchase Awakening based on opinions of others, sure there are some things that could've been better. But over-all, Awakening is a great expansion with loads of fun, well worth the few bucks (yes, some say it's expensive Q_Q).

I would recommend getting it. You will lose out big-time if you don't.

I thought it was fun, but the lack of Origins companions (other than the dreadful Oghren) and absence of romances made it a lot less fun than it should have been. I enjoyed the gameplay but overall it felt sort of hollow.

It depends on what you value.

People who like deep character interaction, internally consistent logic (with the lore), and a more clearly thought out choice and consequence system may find Awakening lacking in those elements but if you like a variety of skills, a shorter, more efficient story, and a short but fun romp that does not require too much emotional investment in the world or characters- and many people do- you'll find Awakening quite rewarding.

I'd say it all boils down to what you expect of an expansion. Given that I did not intend to buy it- I played the gifted game with zero expectations and it was fun. Many people had very high expectations and they were either unhappy or pleased with this expansion.

Perhaps you'd like to ask the opinions of forumites who seem to value the same things in games as you do, and who have played Awakening and ask for their opinion? It would help you get a clearer idea on whether this expansion is worth your time?

I haven't  played the game yet, but I will say this.

I didn't particularly like Alistair in DA:O so that will have no affect on me playing.

DA:O was the first game I've played that had a decent romance option, and while I thought it was a cool thing to add to the game I don't think it's something that is an integral part of a game, let alone an expansion to a game. So that will not have an affect on my enjoyment.

For you it may have a huge impact, but that's just not the case for everyone.

I'm looking forward to playing the game, but what I'd like to know is when the bugs that a lot seem to experience will be worked out so that I can enjoy the game frustration free?

Yeah, a bit pricey perhaps, but not at all bad. Yes, Origins is better but the average scores of about 80% on Metacritic and Game Rankings reflect my feelings well. If you like Origins, this is more of it. Perhaps not equally epic, but entertaining nonetheless.

Are you seriously comparing the length of RtO with the length of Awakening? That's just weird.

I actually wish Awakenings was the "main" game and Origins was a EP. I know that doesn't make sense, but I guess I'm one of the few that doesn't need a love story to like a game.

I didn't miss any romances, new or old ones. In my opinion Awakening wasn't long enough to focus on that (or close friendships with other companions) anyway. I think that would have felt rushed.

game was rushed, some conversations hinted at a quest and there wasnt one, felt like it was cut out. Also I bet im not the only one who defended the city with half his team and expected to fight the keep with the other half. I kept waiting for it to cut to the keep but nope. Gameplay was not worth the cost, 40 dollars is to close to a new game price, for this... 15 to 20 maybe. this has all the marks of something whipped out to make money at the cost of quality, relying on the games orignal fan base to make sales.  You do that to your fans to much and you will pay for it.

Based on this I will not be buying any more expantions for this, mabye when they have a fire sale on steam ill pick it up, but thats it.

the point is not that some of you don't like it... the point is that a large percentage of gamers "do" like it, if not the majority...

and removing it, when you've been accustomed to it by means of the first game is like... removing the mage class from the game... it doesn't break the game and maybe you didn't like it, maybe you even hate mages and don't mind at all... but for a large group of people removing such an element is a deal braker

Towards the end of Origins, I hated Alistair. Although I didn't mind the lack of returning characters, I did mind all the framerate issues and sound drops that accompany the console version.

has there been a poll on this to determine who the majority and minority are?

You are not fooling anyone by pretending you have any idea what the "large percentage of gamers" think.  Sorry sales numbers do not even count because, surprisingly, people do not know if the game is good until they play it.  Future DLC/expansion sales would paint a much better picture, but I suspect you are not interested in looking at any actual data.  So I will let you keep hand waving logic and keep on pretending you speak for the "large percentage of gamers".

Personally, I don't mind that story-wise my character is out doing her thing and must recruit new party members etc. Life is like that...you don't always have all your pals attached to your hip. Just as in a great book, the love interests are often separated through duty or what have you only to be reunited in the end for some epic finale. So the lack of romance in this expansion, while kinda of a bummer, isn't a deal breaker for me.

What I didn't like was how rushed it all felt. What I mean to say is that there was a LOT less depth in the story/character development in Awakenings. That was terribly disappointing to me. Scenes like the joining, for example, felt rather rushed and summarized rather than richly developed as they were in Origins. The richness of the story, the characters and the interactions was what made Origins so fantastic. Lots of games have great fight mechanics now days but most of them have lost the ability to tell a really great story and make the player truly feel a part of it. Those of us who really love RPG's as well as great epic fights and confrontations have been starved for many games with the kind of depth Origins has. Awakenings, I believe, was rushed in order to release it quickly and it showed.

Bioware has a really REALLY good thing going here in Dragon Age and if they continue to produce expansions that stay true to the game play experience, the rich story and character developments that made Origins such an extraordinary experience they could ride this wave for a long time. Most players will be very loyal to a great game even if they must wait a year for the next FULL expansion. Even more so if they know it will be just as full and rich and diverse as the original. I fear that the Awakenings expansion, while not absolutely horrible, is definitely NOT up to par. I hope they don't continue in this fashion because it will kill Dragon Age for the future.

No Alistair is the best part of the expansion pack. Although no romances kinda suck. Of course with the new conversation system I see absolutely no way how a romance could ever work.

Well, I don't think they gave away the "no fun" part before release.

Q: Will the game be fun?

A: Sorry, no.  The plot in Awakening is more focused on the immediate threat of the darkspawn, rather than fun.  But there are several new quests!

No, really, I enjoyed Awakening a lot.  A few less of these annoying little bugs and issues would have been nice, but I pretty much knew what I was in for, and generally wasn't let down.

You are correct that Awakening is a action-focused RPG and not a dating sim, just the way I like it.

As for Allistair: he is in the game. He changed his name to Anders, respecced to a mage and got slightly less annoying. I still feel the urge to kill him though.

Overall I enjoyed it bugs and all cause I looked at it as just a small chapter in my PC's adventures. It felt shallow (the new conversation system is not an improvement, but would welcome more tweaking till they get it right in future expansions) and it was a lot more hack n slash than RP but it still was fun in parts.

It had its flaws and I knew there would be no Alistair (even if he wasn't king) and no romance going in so I didn't have as high of an expectation. As a diversion it was okay fun. I don't feel the same need to replay it though I may in the future.

I really think people went into Awakenings expecting more than was reasonable. It's an expansion. Was it just the price tag that did this to everyone? I personally was very emotionally involved in the story for DA:O, but I read the information and knew before I bought it that there would be no continuation of my romance or interaction with my old friends (much past a kiss on the cheek). I bought it because I like my PC and I wanted her to do more stuff. She did more stuff, it was fun, end of game. Lovely.

Sums up  my own feelings / experience quite nicely.

I enjoy my PCs as well as the DA world, DA:A gave me a chance to play my Warden(s) again, create a new Warden and experience a new playstyle as well as spend some more time in Thedas.

The bugs, the length and the price could be considered legit concerns.

But everyone should give the new companions a chance. I like 'em. Hell, I like Anders, Sigrun and Justice more then any of the original cast.
