I started a new engineer, and am finding it difficult to decide where to put early points.
So far, I have:
Incinerate 3 and Overload 3
(while my shields are weak, staying in cover longer + heavy blam feels better than faster cooldown .. especially since I always have the option of shooting instead of using a power)
I have 4 points to spend, and before getting those points I had been planning to get drone to 2 and put a point in cryo blast, but ... here's the q
Seeing as drone 1 serves a cc purpose already, would it be a better option to beeline for a maxed passive?
I'm only asking about the early game 'cos post Horizon I'd just retrain repeatedly and try different setups .. just trying to see what works best getting me past that point.
Is cryo blast (engineer) really worth it?

It's best to max out abilities one by one depending on what missions you plan on doing. If you're doing armor heavy missions next, go for incineration blast, if you're going shield heavy missions, go for area overload.
Cryo blast is very useful but it's arguably worth it to either have only one point in it, or max it out to full cryo blast. One point is cheap and useful in killing single opponents fast, not so much for crowd dontrol. But full cryo is even more useful since it's an area effect and freezes for longer, so you can use it freely for crowd control.
Pretty much the same goes for drone - one point is a valuable distraction, maxed out attack drone is a wonderful crowd control tool.

Well, I have squad incendiary on Jacob, so I think with incinerate 3 and drone 1 I've got armour covered.
Miranda also has overload 3 ... so I don't think shields are going to be particularly troublesome ... just gonna force her to stay back and not get knocked out.
It's the prospect of Horizon (and the barriers) that has me wondering how best to spend my points.
As I recall with my other engineer, horizon was somewhat annoying .. died a few times.
This new engineer is for a "one life" insanity run. I.e. if Shepard dies, it's game over .. time for a new game.
(So far, I've only managed to suceed once .. with an infiltrator)
So .. while I'm tempted to do archangel recruitment next to get the SMG upgrade (and research shield piercing), it's probably a little too dangerous right now ..
I'm actually thinking Zaeed loyalty (just 'cos I think I have every fight figured out, and am least likely to die), or a few low risk sidequests .. such as the normandy crash site.
I guess I'm trying to figure out what would work best to tackle Horizon with.

I like Cryo and the combat drone. ME 1 I didn't play the engineer that much. ME2 the engineer is turning into my favorite class. I've had very good results with both. Of course I sort of like freezing and shattering. I don't use the AI hacking very much but I top out Tali on that and I top out overload on one of the others.

Incineration blast is probably your best bet against barriers, it still does 170 base damage against barriers and you can catch more than one collector at a time, doing 340 base total for two, or even 510 for three.. Unstable warp does 160*2 = 320 base against barrier against a single target unless you get a warp detonation.

It depends. The idea of cryo blast is pretty much to serve as a finisher against unprotected enemies, just like pull (or throw, really).
If you have a team-mate with either of these abilities you'll be using (say, Jacob) then it is unnecessary to put a point into cryo blast. Otherwise you may want to consider one point.
It's really not worth it in my opinion though, as
1) Incinerate wipes organic unprotected enemies
2) Overload wipes synthetic unprotected enemies
3) You have two squadmates, yknow.
But focusing on Horizon? Max out incinerate. You'll tear through those gosh-darned scions and husks, hopefully, which are far more of a threat than the collector spam.
Cryo just isn't useful on either of these... useless against harbinger... the only purpose it really has is for killing collectors/collector assassins. Using single target cryo on husks is kinda stupid.
So yeah, go with incinerate. Whichever form of it works for you.
I heavily suggest switching out the collector beam rifle for the arcgun if you have it. Far more effective. (Wiping out large crowds of husks, then weaving in and out of cover for the praetorian).

Sold on incinerate .. going to pile points in passive after maxing that (assuming I survive).
I was thinking of taking Zaeed along with heavy inferno grenade, actually ... instead of Jacob.
I had thought about it at character creation, and took AP ammo as a bonus power .. 1 point in that may be enough vs. harbinger/husks/scions .. Miranda's passive + warp is too much to pass up, though. Just can't adequately justify Grunt (after Tuchanka he's a beast, but before .. not so much).
