if you think you need to boost health, you're doing it wrong. shield boosts and shield regen are the only things you need.

kurupt convinced me.

but I can see how wanting to 'save' the invulnerability for when you need to cool down is nifty.  And no one can argue that health bonus is useless to sabre since he never takes health damage.

I get the melee shoulders since I do melee more often than not, and the rest is pure style... It doesn't hurt that the best looking N7 to me is the +shields Arms and Legs, and since the Body looks almost like the original one, it's good too. The +Health Body isn't that bad either... for looks. I don't care about the boosts that much though since I almost never "almost die." When I die, there usually was no saving me.

After running some tests I have found that against heavy damage on insanity+, health or shield equipment makes absolutely no difference at all. This also points to weapon damage being better than both health or shields (specifically against enemies which dont die from one shot, or get defense stripped from one shot, and bosses). A light damage test would need to be conducted to see if there really is a difference between health and shield equipment, but who cares light damage doesnt kill!

My tests were conducted under sustained non burst heavy machine gun fire from a heavy mech. The method of calculation was simple and accurate. Charge a heavy mech at full shields the milisecond it starts shooting machine gun, then stand in front of him to and calculate survival time by using frame and time analysis in video editing software (Virtual Dub). Oddly enough, there was no difference in survival time based on equipment variations at all because the mech damage was so high. You survive just as long with no 0% health and 0% shield equipment as you survive with 15% shields or 15% health equipment.

Here are the interesting numbers, from level 30 insanity+ 5/5 damage protection and hard shields. The upgrades effect total survival time, but do not effect anything else since Shield uptime was the same with 0% shield equipment as it was with 15% shield equipment!

Shield Time To Destruction Average Across All Equipment: .5 seconds
Shield Transition to Health Bar Invulnerability: 1 second
Health Time To Death Average Across All Tests: .7 seconds
Average Total Survival Time Against Heavy Mech Machine Gun: 2.2 seconds
Redundant Field Generator: Added .3 seconds to shield time, Avg survival time one RFG proc: 2.5 seconds

This test shows that against heavy damage, both health and shield equipment is completely worthless.

I'm not going to conduct a test regarding light damage, since light damage rarely kills, but if someone wants to they can. My test results show that not only was I wrong about shield equipment being better for Vanguards, but Kurupt was wrong as well and so was everybody else in this thread. Shield and Health boosting equipment is completely worthless when taking heavy sustained damage on Insanity. Against light damage shield boosting equipment is better than health, because it gives you a longer uptime of shields thus prolonging your burst damage invulnerability period which is shield drop time -1 second. The difference is small enough that the best equipment to wear is either what looks the best, utility equipment (offhand ammo pack, heavy weapon ammo pack, sprint speed, melee damage, etc...) or damage boosting equipment (If someone conducts a test to see if damage boosting equipment makes any difference at all).

I would go naked with just the melee shoulders if possible.

And you would survive just as long as I would against a mech with my 15% shield equipment. How ridiculous is that?

I would also strike more fear into my enemies. No one wants to see a naked guy with a shotgun, stylish shoulder pads, and possibly a beard coming at them.

If you go recon hood, and stabilization guantless you get +10% weapon damage, however this may also be misleading because inferno ammo is a good percentage of your damage, about 40%, and it is affected by power damage equipment instead of weapon damage. So even 10% weapon damage gear would technically give you only 6% more damage unless of course weapon damage gear actually does effect ammo damage.

I dont think many people realize that you are invulnerable for an entire second after your shields drop. You can be hit with 30 missles in that 1 second and nothing will happen to you besides being staggered.

I think RamsenC's beard gives him at least .4 seconds of more survivability... sadly, my Cherrybomb's bun hasn't stopped a bullet yet.

man I tried going for about 10 days without shaving recently and the beard really starts to bug me by day 10. It just feels like something is on my face which needs to be shaved. Day 1-4 actually look good though.

I'm not sure I was wrong, as I said at the start that the difference the armour makes is very little. I pointed out in several threads that I was arguing for the fact that it doesn't matter. But yeah, I agree with you here sabre, it makes very little difference, but will stick by my guns and say that any difference it does make favours health.

I will also agree with sabre on the beard point, got to about 2 weeks with no shave (prostate cancer charity raiser) and I felt as if I was gonna itch my jaw away.

Ah but thisisme8, cherrybombs excellent use of any and all abilties available to her assures her survival. She's also prettier than RamsenC is.

How dare you :o

On a side note since all the shield bonuses seem hardly useful, why not use the body armor that gives 10% faster shield regen. I don't know if it means it starts regening faster or just fills up faster though. If it starts regening faster that is actually a huge boost to survivability since you can get that ~1s delay between health and shield damage more often.

Heh, found out >.<

I think the shield regen piece cuts down the time it takes for your regen to happen (so 10% off 6s = 5.4s for regen to happen). For any class bar vanguard this is very good, but a vanguard can charge again before even this shortened CD can have an effect.

And once you've charged you can't regen your normal shields back, you'd have to regen first then charge to get the extra shields.

The regen is also reset every time you take any dmg to any type of health. This piece is good for the other classes because it cuts down the time they have to hide in cover before health regens, not so much for the VG because any break you take is normally to plan where you're off to next not a shield regen.

Ah that's too bad, if only it regened 1 second faster.

Are these good choices for armor on a vanguard  Life support webing, N7 helmet, Agis vest,  Strength boost pads, and Heavy damping Gauntlets total bonuses: 20% heath, 5% barrier, 25% melee is this good?

I used a similar set up for my vanguard on Veteran and it worked out well.

I prefer these items for Vanguard.

Vangaurd
Helmet: Death Mask/N7 Helmet. 5% Health/10% Negoiation.
Chest: Aegis Vest/Shield Harness. 5% Health/Shields.
Shoulders: Strengh Boost Pads/Asymetric Def Layer/Amplifier Plates. 5% Health/Power Damage/25% Melee Damage.
Arms: Stabilizing Guantlets/Heavy Damping Guantlets. 5% Weapon Damage/Shields.
Legs: Life Support Webbing/Stimulator Conduits. 10% Health/Storm Speed.

For the Vanguard, Health is much more important than Shields to me, you are going to be charging into packs of enemies so your Shields will die quickly, not only that but as a "Rush in and hope they don't kill you" type gameplay, I would prefer a large 2nd layer of defence than throwing all of my defence upgrades to my shields, that's what Sentinels do.

The Death Mask is purly for looks, so the N7 Helmet is technicly better.

I don't have any of the downloadable armor except Cerberus and Inferno, so don't judge me harshly on any "Better" pieces.

If this is true, shouldn't this be fixed. Why even bother with 10% health legs on my soldier then.

According to those numbers you shouldn't! Seems like looks plus amplifier plates are the way to go.
