Recruit Loghain to the wardens, but not lose Alistair?

I think, storylinewise, it would be very fitting to recruit him and have him take the killing blow, but in terms of gameplay there's no way I can get through the last fights without Alistair (my tank).

Is there any way I can have my cake and eat it too?

Nope. Alistair will leave if you spare Loghain. No getting around it. That's his "crisis point", or whatever you want to call it. I think Loghain doubles as a replacement for Alistair, though. It's not like Loghain is a mage. He's yet another warrior... he just won't have the same specs as Alistair. If I had spared him, I'd let you know his specs, but I didn't, so... gonna have to look it up somewhere.

He is a champion

Looked it up. He has pretty much the same talents as Alistair (unless you switched him from sword & shield), only he's a champion instead of templar.

Champion: War Cry, Rally, Motivate, Superiority
Warrior: Powerful, Threaten, Bravery, Precise Striking, Taunt, Disengage, Perfect Striking
Weapon and Shield: Shield Bash, Shield Pummel, Overpower, Assault, Shield Block, Shield Cover, Shield Tactics, Shield Mastery
