Yeah, I work in journalism, and it's absolutely *depressing* to read a lot of the raw copy that moves over the wires. People can be absolutely monstrous toward each other.

Because it's always a good idea to step out on your significant other when said significant other is The World's Biggest BAMF.

I think it's BW tweaking our noses. You can have a somewhat happy end in Origins and then you settle into Awakening and it's loveless and bleak (except for Anders and Sir Pounce-a-lot).

That seems most unlikely from any of them. If there's any foreshadowing to it, it is more likely to be that there would be negative consequences if a PC who was in a romance cheated, perhaps in an upcoming DLC, but I think that's reading too much into it. If that were the case. the 'warnings' would appear in the same DLC/expansion as the opportunity.

Of course, they may have planned to allow more flirtation here than ended up being the case, so perhaps you had the possibility of scuttling your Origins romance in Awakening at one point. I remember someone from Bioware saying that there would be sexual tension between the party members and there was absolutely none--unless you count Oghren.

Heh. Well, let's just put it this way: The type of books I read, the TV shows/movies I watch, and the videogames I play are all part of the escapism from the "real world" I seek sometimes.

And, honestly, I highly doubt I'm alone in that regard.

Yea Anders was cute but the only option with him were a couple minor lines squeezed into the dialogue tree (yea bad pun intended).  Nathaniel though, he really came close to what I felt for the old Origins people but that could be because my PC was a HNF and there was that connection between them pre Awakenings.

You are most certainly NOT alone. I'm only a senior in high school, but I make a point of staying connected with what is happening in the rest of the world. Some of stories/pictures are absolutely terrifying, and it can really make you question humanity.

I don't mind my games/movies/books being a little dark, but sometimes I just want a silver lining, you know? Image IPB

I prefer Anders to Nathaniel (and Alistair to both) but I would not have been able to resist trying out a relationship between my HN and Nathaniel if it was offered. I don't think any other pairing in the game could be nearly as dramatic (it doesn't hurt that Nate is a total dreamboat).

Though in that case, might it not be better to go for something by Shigeru Miyamoto? I mean, it's not like Bioware haven't been hyping DA as a dark, gritty, violent game where bad things happen to people.

There's a fine line between "dark" and "preposterous". BioWare kind of crossed it. If there is a romance in Awakening, it's probably going to end horribly, horribly wrong.

Yea but even that Origin is not without its giggle moments.  Who out there DIDN'T at least try the option of getting all up in Duncan's armored/armed face and trying to kick him out of the alienage with pure moxie?  And you just KNOW he is laughing in that beard while he's trying to test you and ruffle your feathers.  Soris...pure win his line when you do too!

And yet you don't find it preposterous that a bastard or a peasant's daughter may be permitted to ascend to the throne? The odds of a bad love affair happening are much more likely.

No one said fantasy had to be nice.

I for one love the fact that this game has stuck to reality, to some depths. It makes this RPG so much more real to me. Because if stuff like this didn't happen, then that's what makes it feel fake.

I know they usually say that the second part to a trilogy is usually darker, and I'm just going on a whim and assuming that they will do just that with this new baby of theirs, but I'm hoping they don't kill off some of our most beloved characters in the second installment. If there is even going to be one.

DA is already dark, wich I LOVE, but to kill off close companions would be too dark for my liking. Maybe just a few, but not all.

The bastard has quite a bit of support, and that peasant was raised to Teyrn. So, no, I don't find it preposterous.

And, really? Every single romance we see in Awakening can end in tragedy. Seems a bit unlikely.

There aren't sufficient words to describe how angry I was to see that stereotype perpetuated in the game. I AM a soldier's wife, and I'm sick to death of tv and video games perpetuating a stereotype that the majority of us are not guilty of. Show some supportive wives for a change ya know?

I know where you are coming from (Dad was in the Navy for the first 24 years of my life and Mom seems to have coped rather well), but Aura seems to me to fill the role you are looking for.  I will grant we don't actually meet her until she's a widow, but still.

Yep - now look at the real medieval era. Do you see lots of social mobility? No? That's because there wasn't.

The only odd thing about the affairs in Awakenings is the death rate and drama, which, like bastard kings, comes with the territory of heroic fantasy. All love ends, and, judging by the divorce rates in modern countries, it usually ends sooner rather than later.

We've had one game full of relative triumph, now we may as well have an expansion full of relative failure.

You misunderstand. I most thoroughly enjoy DAO and, for the most part, DAA. Just because I seek a degree of escapism in my entertainment choices doesn't mean I get overly worked up when dark themes reminiscent of real life work their way into my pastimes. Besides, I subscribe to the theory that while there are "black" and "white" edges to life in general, the vast middle is varying degrees of gray.

Last, but not least, never mention Nintendo or anyone associated with that company to me ever again. I abandoned that platform after the N64 debacle. Thank you. *smiles*

What I hated about Nida was that when you deliver Keenan's message, she starts in on you about how her poor murdered husband was an idiot and how she never wanted this life, blah, blah, blah. If he wasn't around enough for her when he was an Orlesian Warden, why stay with him and move to Ferelden? Or did she take a lover after he disappeared because he was kidnapped, tortured, and murdered by darkspawn? She doesn't even ask for the story she just whines that he was inattentive.
