I just started playing Mass Effect (PC version) a few weeks ago (about 9 hours in) and I was loving it until suddenly my saves dissappeared. I recently started using rocketdock and had to play around with some file locations and shortcuts and such so I'm thinking that's possibly where things went wrong. I reinstalled the game from Direct2Drive and inserted my old save file into the game folder and still nothing - any ideas on how I can fix this? My wife and I both had 8 or 9 hours in the game and are hating the idea of starting over.

Thanks in advance

The file was taken from/put back in \\Documents\\Bioware\\Mass Effect\\Save right?

It's possible this difficulty results from you not saving your MassEffectProfile file, which stores both achievements & a list of careers. However, try entering the Load Game menu, clicking Select Career, and choosing All Careers. Hopefully your old saves will show up there. (You might need to start a new game game before it will let you do this, I seem to recall the game menus being a bit different until you make your "first" save.)

Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking I somehow made an error when reinstalling as I got this error when I tried to take your advice:

A problem occurred while saving the game. No game session data was preserved. Please try again.

Should I uninstall the game, but save my game profile, then reinstall and insert the profile into the new save folder? Or do I have some other sort of problem?

Thanks again for the help - I reaaly want to get back to playing my game.

I don't think I've seen that before. When exactly did it pop up? (Upon running the game after changing things in the save folder? Or when you tried to load a game - if so, when you clicked on what? Or when you tried to save a game?)

My immediate thought is that if you restored your saves, or especially your profile file, from CD or somesuch, they may be marked read-only.

As for re-installing: I thought you said you'd already done that? But if you haven't since you moved files around, maybe something got mixed up in that.

I started a new game hoping that I would be able to save it, and then have the option to Load Game as you suggested. When I tried to save the new game is when I got the error.

I've never had a game disc. I bought it from Direct2Drive.

Thanks in advance

Hmm.. so I reinstalled it and I was able to make a new save this time but I cant locate the save folder to place my old profile in. The folders that show up in my Mass Effect folder (no Bioware folder) are:

Binaries

Biogame

Data

Docs

Engine

and the Mass Effect Launcher.

I looked in each folder and didn't see an obvious save file anywhere. I tried just dropping my profile into the general Mass Effect folder but that didnt work. Any idea where the game is saving files?

Thanks again

the save folder is located in my documents.

also about your " No game session data was preserved. Please try again." error it must be because some files are missing (or corrupted?), I have a problem which is that my game creates only "profile" files when saving but no "save" files (the one including your character name), so I asked a friend for one of his and when tring to load (my profile) the same message appeard, so either your "profile" or your "save" files may be missing...

Confirming what Hulman said. The save games are NOT anywhere in your Mass Effect game directory, or even near it. Instead the save game files are in your "My Documents" folder, in the "Bioware\\Mass Effect\\Save" subfolders. Furthermore, if the files are copied there, then I think they will simply appear in the game itself.

Well, after much frustration I found what works for me. TODave offered the key to the solution. When the initial folders were created in my documents, the "Save" subfolder was not created. Creating the "Save" subfolder inside of the directory tree fixed my problem. Apparently the 'save' game doesn't check to see if 'Save' exists or not, nor does it create the 'non-existant' folder.

Hope that helps you all--
