Chapter 1- Decent into Darkness-

They say that darkspawn hold no prisoners. That they are senseless. That all they do is animalistic. Whom ever told you these stories, didnt know the truth.

The old gods, their just the side goal. Their true motives are far darker, more sinister then I had come to believe.
I was born in highever in a town very near Amaranthine, and that is where my story begins. My name is Judge ves Dure, a half breed. My father was a Qunari warrior, my mother was a Dalish Keeper. All my life as a youth I was an outcast, to everyone. Called demon by the chanters and mutt by the Dales, I found friends only with rogues, apostates and wolves that migrated from the black marshes.

At the age of 16 I was recruited by the local band of rogues and made to work. It was here that everything collided with death. After learning everything I could from the rogues I decided to travel for a few years and soon found myself in the employment of the legion of the dead, an infamous group of warriors and rogues dedicated to defending the deep roads from the darkspawn. It was here that I met Wagen Stoneweld. A legioner commander and veteraned darkspawn killer. At a glance he would look insane slighlty tall for a dwarf with a white beard. But the most astounding feature was his blindness. He could not see, yet he had slain as many darkspawn as the wardens themselves. He was forming a small scouting band of well trained topsiders to enter the legion. His plan was to open the legions doors to more than just dwarves to help fend off more darkspawn.

I was the last to join. Five others before me. An Elven girl named Lilith she was second in command and top swordsman of her rank. Jerico was a young Human who had never really fit in anywhere prior to the legion. A skilled apostate mage enough so that templars denied to capture him fearing for their lives. A human girl named Chloe from the free marches she never spoke much of herself. All I knew of her was her name and that she hated deep stalkers. I never truly knew the other two members of the group, they were legioneer scouts and always remained ahead. One was an elf the other a dwarf. Always hidden behind cowls or hoods and only spoke to the commander, that is all i remember of them. I thought I had found a place were I would feel welcome, this was only the calm before the storm.

It was our first mission and last mission that would decimate our worlds. We were tasked by king Aeducan to clear a way and investigate a sound most would call the screech of an archdemon. The goal was simple, if we found the beast destroy it at any means. A warden was charged to come with us, to ensure that it would not just rise up again.

We spent months in the thaigs searching and hunting down darkspawn. I never spoke to the others during this time. I didnt want to form a dependance. I knew that inside this abysmal hell life was as fleeting as the wind.

6 months where spent, searching, killing, sleeping. It was all we knew. On rare ocassions we would speak but only a few words. Commander would issue orders through scripts or passages, and only when full moons came would we drink in debauchery. I remember only hearing Liliths voice once. She was always vigilant and watchful, keeping close tabs on me making sure I did my job. The time she spoke was almost like a dream. I fell through a pit, ending in a den of darkspawn. I stood my ground before being overwhelmed by ogres. The pounded me to the ground, each fist spouting blood from my mouth. At a distance all the way to the top of the pit I saw her face, bathed in fear with tears in her eyes. I raised my hand up at her, massive pain through my muscles."Help me!!!", came thrashing through her throat and out at an instant. That was the last thing I remembered of that day. I awoke days later to find her tending my wounds smiling. Commander standing over head with a horned helm not worn before. "Boy, your one lucky son of a *****. Not many youngins can say they were crushed by ogres and lived. I made me a nice pair of daggers out of their horns and a helm out of their skulls. Rest easy now you start again tomorrow."

That event marked the moment of connection. It was in that moment I remembered I was a person. Months and months of isolation and solidarity makes you forget. After this, the commander Lilith and I had a deep connection. We would converse in few moments often small frases such as" be careful" or "Dont stray too far." It may seem like it was a customary thing to converse down in the deep roads. But not with us, silence was golden.

We were in hell, we felt no need to discuss it further.

As the days went by we came upon a clearing full of brood mothers. Each spewing hundreds of children per hour and letting them feed off of their breasts. The sight was horrid. Vile images still play in my head. Our task was to clear the chamber. the warden headed the assault while the two hooded soldiers archered from a distance. The commander and Jerico distracted the foes with connected explosions. Me and Lilith, we were tasked with killing the brood mothers six and all. We ran in unison, sycronized to the eb and flow of the blades. I gouged open the floor dragging my qunari blade close in and stricking open two brood mothers. Liltih dove from the above ridges and decapitated two more. The final two brood mothers growled in contempt as if knowing our forboding pressance. As we approached them they swept the ground with hundreds of tentacles. One ofter another we cut therm down till we reached them both. I broke one in half, Lilith however was less than fortunate. The brood mother grasped her by the waste and tore out her throat ripping the juggular clean off.

Tossed aside to a small ditch, i ran to her side before the brood mother could finish the job. The warden arrives at nick of time pace and ends the bloody monsters rampage. "Lilith...Lilith, damn the maker, are you ok?" She did not respond. Blood flowed like a rive from her throat. I attempted to heal her using ther minor magic I knew but all I could do is stop the bleeding. I bandaged her throat. "Judge do not be afraid....(cough)...I will be fine."

Her breath drawing to a close, only seconds remained before the harvester of souls would come for her. The warden swiftly shifted his attention from the now rotting corpse of the brood mother and over to us. He grabbed a handful of poultrices from a small pouch in his pocket and gently rubbed it on her wound. The bleeding stopped, and the gash on her throat began to close. "She will be fine, let us take her back to camp. There we can regroup and rest", the confidence in his voice spread to my head like a virus. I was covered in her blood, I didnt need to hear a reassurance. I wanted to hear her voice not his.

I picked her up, attempting not to wound her any further and carried her to camp. The warden remained behind to burn the corpses of the brood mothers. When I arrived, the commander already had a tent prepared. Another group of legion warriors was encountered during the fight and they were sharing camp with us tonight. Among them was a red haired drunken arse who smelled of a brewery. I did not recall his name but his fellow troops claimed him to be a close friend of the warden who defeated the archdemon Urthamiel. I rushed Lilith to the tent and left her to rest. The groups medics tended to her wounds and advised me to leave the area so as to not worry her.

The drunken arse sitting by the campfire entertained the others while the warden, the commander and the other legions commander spoke. Only whispers could reach my ears...

"She needs the cure...its the only way to save her life.." spoke the warden.

"NO! I will not hear this....she will be fine", the commander threw a bottle of spirit to the ground in anger.

They turned to look at me as I forced myself into the subject. "If there is a cure I will aquire it."

The commander looked displeased. They knew she was poisoned by the brood mother, as is anyone who encounters darkspawn and is wounded. But I didnt know what this "cure" was nor how to attain it. This was my folly.

"We need archdemon blood... it is too dangerous to attempt to aquire any. The blight has already been quelled and the only way to attaint a potency in darkspawn blood strong enough to cure her we would have to start the blight ourselves." The warden looked grim, it would have seemed that it would be the end of Lilith. None have traversed "Pandemonium" and lived let alone tried to find an archdemon amongst the rubble. (Pandemonium-inner workings of the deep roads.)

"It would be a fools errand to attempt such a feat. The darkspawn will slay anyone who where to get near the hordes. It is a hopeless endevour."

I felt so powerless. A comrade facing death or worse, the only cure being the ultimate act of treason. I left the commander's and the warden alone. I couldnt stand to see them. The choice was mine alone to make. To travel this path would be an enemy to mankind.

Chapter 2- Foe to mankind

I left the camp that night. Took my weapons, some rations and headed into Pandemonium. My mind was determined to find her a cure. No consequence mattered, so long as I could hear her voice once more I would be pleased.

As I walked away from camp fear griped my heart. Every shadow grew menacing. Every stone was a foe. The name of this place was well deserved. The old gods themselves would have gone mad down here.

Weeks went by, each slowly depleeting my rations. I was reduced to hunting wild nugs, deepstalkers, the occasional Bronto for substinance. My equipment withered, got torn. But this is the deep roads, equipment lays dormant everywhere.

One night, as I slept in an isolated stone house of an old thaig. A shimmering light had awoken me. It lay on the roof of the tunnels. Out of curiosity I climbed the thaig walls. I was met with a blade glowing like the blue stars in the sky. The power that eminated from the blade was flowing. As I grabbed the hilt, a strange vision flowed into my head. A vision of a silver haired elf slaying an archdemon years before, following him into the deep roads and finaly laying the blade to rest on the thaig wall. On the thaigs wall were etched the words,"So that may others find their way to the starry sky when darkness wants to kill you- Sparrow Mahariel."

This blade was left to find its own way throught the darkness. It belonged to the warden commander.

I of course pulled this longsword out of the stone. It was a treasure worth keeping. The blade sung to me in my sleep sometimes. "....starfang....." As if giving a name to itself. Shortly after returning to the abandoned isolated stone house, I found a surprise awaiting me. I had always heard rumors of Pride and Lust demons living deep near the thaigs but only now had In come to face the truth. Both Pride and Lust stood before me. Pride towering over me like the "Tower of ishal" and lust whispering and entrancing me like a Pearl wench.

Pride stood forth piercing me with his spear like eyes. Fearsome as he may have looked fear did not cripple me. It did not seem that a confrontation is what they wanted. "A mortal youth, what a wonderous sight to behold." Lusts words so subtle that warmth drowned my face. "What do you wish of me demon? Is it my body you seek, if so I find myself at opposition with you." Pride became enraged, swinging his chained arms to and forth. Letting loose a roar that could slice through the old gods souls. "Little elven whelps should stay their toungs. We come here to bargain, a deal of sorts." Pride stood forth and opened his hands. There I could see a set of studded leather armor, custom make. Black dye, lenghtier trench, silver trim. Beautiful and elegant. My own cloth tattered and torn, I asked the demon duet,"I see the item to be bartered what do you wish of me?" Lust lay her hands on my shoulders. Pressing hard against my body, seductive but deadly much like the vipers of highever. "The deal is you take us with you. You see, we have been trapped in this hell for such a long time. Silence eternal and not a drop of freedom. We wish to see light for a change and so we have sown our souls to the clothing you see." Pride drew forth a sister piece to the leather armor. A dagger, shaped like a wolven fang. It bore a silver blade with a black hilt.

"The weapon and armor are named after us. They will grant you our strengh and us as well. In exchange for our services, we will see the world through your eyes. We will share a body, one vessel three forms. It would seem they where being honest. I sensed no ill intent from neither. "Verywell, I will agree to this. But with another tie to you. When I call for your help, you will give it. No regrets." The bargain struck, I adorned the new equipment along with "Starfang" and proceeded to create a blood right. I drew pentagrams, with lyrium dust I had collected in a small pouch. Lit a few black candles I found stashed in a dresser in one of the old rooms in this thaig. Slit my wrist to provide the fuel, and merged with the demons.

Darkness took my mind for a moment. No light to brighten it, and then I awoke. All my senses became hightened. I could hear droplets from the surface all the way to the hold I was residing in. I could hear pride and lust whispering to me. "Such memories, all you have seen. It intices us so. What is this mission you wish to acomplish?"

"I seek an archdemon, a dragon...deep within the tunnels. by slaying it and taking its blood to my friend, I will be able to save her life. After this we leave the tunnels."

Pride made his pressence known. His shadow replaced my own. A permanent reminder of my new true self. "Boy, remember. From now on when you fight. We are fighting aswell. Your foes our own. Your trials ours as well."

I cleaned up the camp I had set up. Taking my leave before more suprises came my way. I didnt bother to clean the ritual site. These are the deep roads after all. Who in the hell would ever find them?

A few days passed as I tredded through tunnels. More and more darkspawn met their end to me. Pride ever vigilant to help. Lust showring my dreams with pleasure and bliss. It was like a peaceful march to my grave. Not even the grey wardens have attempted to sufur the roads and kill an archdemon I doubt one has attempted this on his own. In my head the words, "What chance have I?" grew like a plague.

It felt like about a month since I left camp and the Legion behind. I prayed to Lusacan old god of darkness for guidance and for the well being of Lilith. I had feeling that she was still alive but I knew time was fleeting. Suddenly like a thunderous roar from beneath the earth, I saw it. Infront of me lay a small temple surrounded by darkspawn. None were violent all in a trance. In the center, was the "Archdemon". i had never felt a terror like this before. It caught eye of me and took flight. Landing right above me fangs at kill strike distance.

Chapter 3- Saving an innocent, becoming a devil.

"Judge, move we do not wish to die here," in unison spoke both pride and lust. Both afraid, knowing true fear when it was needed to be known.

Fearsome though it was, it did not strike. Instead it emmited a haze from its mouth. Seeping in to me. I lost conciousness.....

"Hirdeel, vormister donth val diniem...Harem..."

I awoke to this song. It consumed my mind for moment after moment. Pride and lust both as hypnotized as I. The archdemon stood before us. No hostility, instead words. "Welcome lost child. Born to the realm of humans as an abomination much like I. I have chosen you for a task, one that must be fulfilled. My dearest Judge... you are a warden now. A dark warden who shall take arms against my enemies. None shall know where you are and amongst us you will live." I arrose to my feet. To find darkspawn tending to me.

A headache and then more words..."Judge, I have slipped a vial of my blood to your pouch. Use it to cure your love. I shall need you both to fulfill this task. My dearest and wonderous children. Now go save your mundane brothers of their ignorance."

"Should you fail, you brothers shall end your missery. Now I shall take you back to your camp... the Legion camp you had left where your friends still lay."

As he finished his words, a dark veil took me. I was swallowed hole, no chance of escape. Then he was gone. The darkspawn, the archdemon. Like a haunted dream.

I awoke again in a daze, back at camp as if I never left. What seemed like months, was reduced to mere hours. "This is why they call the inner deep roads pandemonium. For when one enters, one goes mad."

I still bore starfang, the black leather armor and the silver dagger. Pride and Lust however where dormant. Knocked unconcious by the pressence of the archdemon.

I walked to the tent where they had Liltih being treated. The commander of course was not pleased with my absence.

"Where the hell did you go!? Lilith has been conscious for hours now. Worried to death about you."

I didnt know what to tell him. I mean I cant just say,"Oh I went for a lovely month stroll in pandemonium searching for archdemon blood and making pacts with bloody demons." Well thats exactly what I said. His response, a sodding fist to my jaw.

"Your a real smart ass you know that? Now where were you?"

He didnt care so much to hear it again. But I hadnt really a choice on what to tell him.

"I ****ing told you okay. I found the archdemon, I have its blood. Thats whats important right?"

The warden entered the room. Chilled to the bone when he saw me. As if he knew what I had done. His eyes never deviated from me. Like a cerberus on the gates of hell.

"So you have aquired the blood good. Commander bring both the boy and Lilith. We will begin the right emidiately."

I thought back to what the archdemon said. His mission for me. Why had the spawn of hell let me live? The warden knew, he sensed the taint in me. He knew I would die unless I either did what the archdemon wished of me or underwent the wardens right. All legion members knew. Why keep it secret from us? We were already dead after all.

A few mages enchanted the flagon used in the ritual. Ancient magic from before tevinter. It super powered the potency. Making it pure. Drinking caused death, but not for what many thought. It wasnt the taint that killed. It was the old gods blood that caused it. To a mortal gods blood is a tranformation. Gives you power but it also destroys your form slowly. If was trully darkspawn taint that made wardens there should have been accidental wardens all over. This is why archdemon blood is needed. To create the wardens.

The warden read the oath, the words spoken from times of old, "Join us brothers and sisters, join us for the task that cannot be forsworn, and if you fall remember that your sacrifice will not be forgotten."

Lilith went first, taking a sip from the flagon. It was terrifying. She would be cured, but only if she "survived" of course. She started to gag, chocking as all do who undergo the right. Then the collapse.

She was alive.

Next was I, but how would it affect me, I had the archdemons blood in me already... a dark warden. Would it kill me or make me stronger?

"Judge there is no turning back. Drink or die?" The wardens arrogance pissed me off. Under that helm I wondered if he was laughing. Mocking me? Did he know of my encounter? Of my task from the archdemon.

Every second I stared at him I wanted to gut him. i didnt know why, but he annoyed me. Almost like I could read his thoughts. I could hear the archdemons whispers, "those are your miss guided brothers. Slaves to the chantry and all their sinners. Maker worshiping pigs. But your brothers are not to blame. Under go the right my child."

I grabbed the flask from his hands. I drank the whole lot of it. Some driped down my lips. For a moment I looked insane. But never had I felt so powerful. I could see the archdemon as what he was. He glowed of silver and black, powerful aching roars of sorrow. He was a god and was betrayed. All because of the damn "Maker". A stupid fictional story concocted to control the masses. I knew this because the archdemon knew this.

His mind was mine.

Mine was his.

Then the warden drew blade at me. Took off his helm to reveal his face.

"Filthy spawn of the archdemon, your trickery ends here!" The bastered knew all along.

His blade pierced nothing however. Pride wouldnt let him.

"Warden, heed my warnings. This vessel is ours. He is a warden now, and wether you like it or not, you must train him!" Pride broke the wardens sword to shards, fiercely returning to my shadow with a thunderous roar.

The warden glanced at his broken edge. Afraid would not described his emotions. He looked upon me with terror.

"What is your ****ing name warden!? I wish to know what to write on your tomb stone if you so ever as try to kill me again?" I had no selfcontrol anylonger. Words would run from my mouth like rivers of blood.

"My name is.....Lionel..le, Lionele Ward."

I grabbed the pieces of his broken edge and placed them in a sheath. The warden was frightened, but he swiftly regained composure. Enough to ask me, "Why have you merged with demons? Why do you sound like the archdemon? Tell me so I may help you?"

I stared at the gem covered stones of the camp wall listening to what the archdemon spoke to me,"LIE!"

I approached the warden lifting him from the ground where he sat after the encounter with Pride. "It is because the only way to save Lilith was to find it. That is all you need to know, if you wish to help however aid me in becoming stronger."

The commander was not as rational as the warden, he did not know to pick his battles. He attempted to kill me and failed. With my back turned he grabed a dagger and pierced my chest. The blood splattered on the ground. Pride was not pleased. I did not hate him for his actions, but they would not permit harm to come to me.

Pride came forth and ripped off his limbs leaving only a head and a torso. Lust came as well,"So pityful, you missed the heart. Now we shall have yours!" With this she clasped her hands on his head and began twisting, slowly and slowly...the sounds of the tearing flesh and finaly snap. His head was torn off. I shed a single tear for him.

Such a waste of talent. The warden payed no mind to this scenario. To him it was a daily occurance, what did it matter to see death. Lust pulled the blade from my chest, and stitched the wound shut. Magic, even demon magic was wonderous indeed.
