However, I do think there's room for some multiplayer in ME. What I'd love to see specifically is GoW style Horde mode (Yes I know, as if ME2 isn't already like GoW enough). Provided there was splitscreen mind you. I don't think competitive multiplayer would work without neutering Biotics though. Too much loss of control. I would get fairly pissed after being hit with Throw for the 50th time straight. No one would play anything else.
In the end, I think it comes down to this. Would it compromise the main game? At this stage of the franchise, I don't think mutliplayer is anything more than extraneous fluff. If it was put in because of the cries for it and the main game suffered, I wold rage.

The series has been way too heavily watered down to cater to people with dumbed down ability to handle a proper RPG and engaging deep missions, It frankly can't handle any more streamlining, of any kind, and to get any kind of co-op to function at anywhere near an acceptable level, you'd have to gut the feature list and gameplay to something that would barely even resemble Mass Effect.
The games already have a fair list of things that could have and should have been added to them to enhance the single player experience and the game's depth, but for issues of time and budget and whatever else they didn't make it. If any and I mean any development staff or budget get put into MP of any kind, that means a further loss to Single Player, it's inevitable.
If you try and add Co-op, even as DLC, all your going to do is hurt the SP experience, less missions, less content, more bugs, worse game, it's not an assumption, it's a given. It'd be a major undertaking with a lot of effort and man hours to come up with a redesign of the combat system, and that's one area that doesn't need it.
They made a lot of improvements to it for ME 2, and now it only needs some tweaks to get it back inline with where it should be, not a major overhaul, and that should mean a lot more time and effort can be put into getting the RPG elements back (which Bioware has already said they want to do for ME 3) and deepened, and adding other needed changes and additions.
Plus there is the fact that Bioware has virtually no experience at all at making a multiplayer game or mode, except what they are learning with SWTOR, which would not relate well.

I think a ME MMO is a no go but a co-op funktion like in fable 2 would be very good because you keep the RPG part and you get to play the game together with your friends. So you get the good stuff from co-op and the good stuff from RPG... can it get any better?
Are you seriously suggesting that Fable's system should be put into Mass Effect? Please tell me that's sarcasm. Fable's system worked because Fable's story and character interaction is about as complex as a dog pissing on a tree, and that's the only way it worked. In many ways, the game is barely an RPG.
On top of that, Fable 2 really didn't even have a functional co-op, it was nothing more than an interactive spectator mode. You go into a friends game world and tour it, and if one of you was a high level/high gear character, there wasn't even any need or reality of co-op. One of you could just stand around farting and making lewd gestures while the other made mean faces at all the bad guys and maybe occasionally stabbed or shot someone before the rest ran or stood there wetting themselves while you gutted them.
None of that would work on any level in ME.

Fable 2 didn't lose any story because of that...Dethateer wrote...
No, because that way you lose the story, mr. Turner.

Yes, I do want multiplayer in the Mass Effect universe. Just not in any part of the trilogy involving commander Shepherd.
This, this and more this.
The ME universe would make for an awesome MMO. We have all kinds of playable races, places to visit, problems to fix etc.
But not in the ME trilogy, thanks.

THESE.
I think you can't really multiplayer such a character based story game. How would that work - would we ALL be Shepard.
I think when games attempt to intorduce multiplayer elements as an addition, rather than being a multiplayer game to begin with, they always suffer for it. There are too many multiplayer games which do that very well out there already, and as one of the best RPGs on the market, the story would inevitably not be anywhere near as good. Stick wih what you do best. Or at least, pick a form and stick with it!
A dedicated MMO in the ME universe, however, would be pretty awesome.

On the plus side, the universe is absolutely friggin amazing and really asks for more exploration, it's practically begging for a multiplayer game.
On the minus side, we all hate rogues wtfpwning us at the first chance they get. Not to mention the horde of assinine kids who clutter MMOs.
The only way it would be feasible as i see it is minimising PvP, like the PvE servers on WoW, and enabling it only on certain zones. Someone mentioned EVE online also, which brings us to a nice multiplayer model. If one could join a faction, say the Turians, Salarians, mercenaries like blue suns, be all PvE within them and generate large battles among the factions, could work ... but that's a big maybe.
I just feel like ME, for all that's been done with it, deserves more exploration. They created a big gem with this story and universe, which even with all the dialogue and text that we have on these two games, I personally think they've only scratched the surface of possibilities, story-wise. Now if an MMO is a good venue for developing it, I don't know. But it would be sad to end it with the trilogy (well not if they go all star wars on it, we know how that worked).

But if they do like KotOR and **** up the sequel (note: talking about KotOR here and yes I know Obisian made KotOR2, I'm not 100% happy with ME2 compared to ME1 but I still love the game) and then just make an MMO with apparently no plans to continue the story from the first two games (if you managed to make sense of KotOR2 anyway) in single player then I'll pass.
Simply put, I wouldnt' mind an MMO if the single player RPG games set in the ME universe don't suffer for it.
