As always, this guide is written for players playing on Normal difficulty.
Also, due to many different outcomes in storyline progression, this
fight might unfold differently. This guide will walk you through the
fight against the High Dragon in Haven.

Party Setup:
  • Tank
  • Ranged DD (In this case my rogue, equipped with a bow)
  • Ranged DD (Mage perferibly)
  • Healer
There are always different party setups and again, do to playstyle you may be
able to do this encounter without a healer or mage, this is just the
way I did it.

The Fight:

Positioning

Place your ranged characters away from your tank, a fairly good distance, double the range of your Cone spells should be sufficient. Further back than necessary is better because when you have your tank blow the horn the dragon will drop in doing and AoE knockdown.

Following the drop in, pause to micro your characters into place. Put your tank at one end (the closest) making the dragon face away from the party. Then, move all of your ranged away from the dragon, the distance you are looking for is slightly out of range for your cone spells. This makes it so you will avoid being tail swiped. Turning the dragon away from the group avoids your ranged from being breathed on. Remember to keep an eye out for when she breathes because you can move your tank slightly out of the way to avoid a constant flow of damage.

For my first Ranged DD I simply left her autoattacking because she was a rogue with zero archery abilties, so the way you manage this character will be different. As for your healer, if you have the talent, life ward your tank and be sure to throw up heroic defense (if you have it) when she breathes, or keep it up as often as possible to reduce damage. Now the mage is what is going to require the most micro (and its not even that much). Whenever your Cone of Cold is up, you run forward and cast it, to where the Cone just barely hits her, and then you run back (spam your fire or lightning one as well if you have it). Repeating this process will avoid your mage from being 1 hit tail swiped and still be able to do your stuns (reduces incoming damage) and increase your damage output.

Things to remember:

The fight is competely worth it.  She drops A LOT of stuff. Also, you need to stay ontop of your healing, don't just run with the tactics (unless you have it set up to heal at <75% health). The dragon can, and probably will pick up your tank at least once and jossle him around a bit (this is where lifeward comes in hand) so you need to keep his health up. You can also stun, paralyze, or Cone of Cold the dragon to make her drop the tank from her grip. For the most part, this entire fight is very simple, just make sure you have hold position on and are paying attention to your tanks health along with your mages cooldowns. If at first you don't succeed, refine, redo and reread.

Good luck!^_^

Didn't have much trouble with the fight - use cone of cold every time it was on cooldown and kept my heals up (helps the two mages were my main, who has spirit healer as far as group heal and revive and Wynne who is maxed in spirit healing) and it was all good.

Difficult fight, but one shotted the dragon and looted her corpse :D

What is a good level for your characters to be at to try this fight?

Level is only important in terms of what gear you can wear, make sure your tank is in at least T6, which is your blood dragon armor or equivelant. Also, in my experience, you want to avoid melee DD's because of the fact that she has a lot of AoE stuns and flank prevention moves.

walkthrough is okay, but lacking

first, on positioning pre-fight:

Press 'H' and set up your party, range at mid range etc, tank where you want to fight, make sure you are using the tank character to blow the horn.

The most devastating attack the Dragon does is the maul, where she picks your tank up in her mouth. when you see this, cone of cold, or Winters Grasp will borce her to drop your tank, the rest is pretty much tank and spank, and dont be complacent with heals

I won the fight easily by using warmth potions that I had stock up or brew. Just keep your dps ranged mage apart from the others and the dragon will keep fireballing the highest damage pc in your party. Others just wail away at it.

I ended up skipping/passing over the fight after the urn, but I still have the horn. Is it possible for me to go back and fight her now when most of my chars are level 12?

I thank you for your input Ub3r.  All feedback is used to updating the guide and I'll be sure to add your insights.

You can return to the fight whenever you want, assuming you keep the horn.

You assign it to your hotbar and blow it.

And it is performed between the temple of the ashes and the one with the dragons.

I just abused had my tank taunt and then put force field on him. I have no idea why the dragon keeps trying to hit an immune target.

Shale is by far the best tank for this fight. The fact that she doesn't need to be as well-equipped as a humanoid tank(Shale is a "creature" and this gains a lot of stats for free, like various resistances) and it is easy to bump up her Fire Resistance with her Crystal gear.

Evenmore so if you choose to save arl Aemon the first thing you do after Ostagar, since your humanoid tanks probably still have medium armour!

The High Dragon really isn't all that tough on normal, just have a mage use Telekinetic Weapons and your attacks will deal full damage. And don't try to use fire damage.

On the one hand, that's good to know... on the other hand, people that come back after getting the Drake Scale Armor, v1 and v2, should probably know that already.  (The second part anyway.)  Still, there's a lot that's nonobvious about this game already, so...

CC the dragon... over and over again. It's a trivial fight.

I had my PC (elf mage with Arcane Warrior), Morrigan, Leliana and Shale.

PC combined range attacks with sword and shield. Teamed with Morrigan to keep up Life Drain, Ice Glyph, Lightning.

Had Shale tank all the way through, throwing in Quake and Slam whenever possible.

Kept Leliana at range and firing explosive bolts through Arrow of Slaying.

Kept up Healing.

PC and Morrigan fell but reduced High Dragon's health down to less than 50%.

Leliana kept up Arrow of Slaying.

Shale kept up tanking with Quake, Slam and just continued hitting.

Brought the sucker down.
