I'm trying to chose party member matching for the mission to be most interesting.
For example. For Tali loyalty mission I took Legion and Miranda or Samara.
For Jack mission - Miranda and Grunt or Mordin etc.
Anyway, I take the people that have the most relevance to the mission. Otherwise those I think would be best suited for that particular mission.
Tali and Garrus (+Legion) are a must on any mission where you wear a helmet, though, as all other "helmets" look retarded.

I just pick who I like the most as characters for their mission dialogue.
I always do that. EVen, on N7 missions against mercs, I use at least one of Garrus/Zaeed, since I know they have a grudge against them.

If your friends sit around and watch you play all the time, might indicate you have larger issues than being gay.The Spamming Troll wrote...

Just for fun and challenge.Worked better then i expect it.
I made the samara recruitment with legion and tali.
The game is easy enough to get away with it.
And some squadmates like miranda are overrated anyways.

Hmmm. I wouldn't worry about that much if I was you. Sounds like you may just be going through puberty and discovering your own sexuality. As you grow older and mature into adulthood, your prefrontal cortex will hopefully be more developed and you will gain a better perspective about these things. The Spamming Troll wrote...

I just pick who I like the most as characters for their mission dialogue.
Similarly, I choose my armor based on looks and not stats.
I've beat the entire game on insanity doing this, and did not change it up even at parts where I was having trouble and knew a different party configuration would make it easier.
Does this make me vain?
On my first playthrough I think I played with mostly Miranda and Jacob, because they were the two I started with and it became regular to bring at least one of them along on missions. But not all the time! I definitely tried to shake it up a bit and give everyone a chance to go on a mission with me.
Obviously the first time through you don't know who has any dialogue - so I went with ones I thought would be best suited on a mission - e.g. I thought I'd bring Tali along on the derelict reaper mission along with Samara (because I'd only just picked Samara up shortly before and was testing her out, plus she was the biotics specialist on my squad /Tali for tech and I was default Sheploo, so I provided the combat). Great choice as Tali had some good dialogue when you want to take Legion back to the ship with you.
Also another funny moment was bringing Mordin and Jack along with me to the Collector ship - I took Mordin as the tech expert and also his work on the Collector counter-measures enticed me to bring him along to see the Collectors close up. Jack was there for the biotic support and I also was getting to like her brash attitude. She had a great line when you find out the Collectors were Protheans - something like "I don't want to be turned into some f**ed up bug thing!" which made me laugh.
And bringing Jack and Miranda along with me on the final battle paid off with Miranda's extra dialogue telling the Illusive Man to shove it.
-------
When I played the game through a second time I wanted a totally different experience so I thought about who I took along with me on every previous playthrough mission and decided to take all different people (still thought about who's skills would be handy though, but there's some flexibility on that).
I took Garrus and Mordin with me to Horizon (before it was Miranda and Jacob) as I wanted to see a Garrus and Kaiden reunion. Also I wanted Mordin to see if his anti-swarm tech worked first hand.
I took Garrus and Zaeed along with me to Jack's recruitment (before I think I took Mordin and Miranda) and was thoughtful about Zaeed's comments on the torture scene and how he didn't approve. Interesting to see differen't character's perspectives. Before I think I got Mordin saying how barbaric it was and unacceptable.
Disappointment was the final mission where this time I took Thane and Samara with me - they said nothing at all during the Illusive Man speech! Although their fighting skills were very useful against the Collectors - I just reaved and threw them all off the platforms before they even got close! It was very easy getting through them all.
About the vanity part too - I had a female Shepard on the second playthrough and although I liked the visor you could add to your outfit and it's fighting bonus (headshot accuracy isn't it?), I decided to just wear no headgear at all because it didn't quite work with Shepard's hairstyle (part of it went through her hair at the back unrealistically). She looked far more pretty without it. Even Conrad Verner said she was beautiful in ME1... He didn't say the same about my male Shepard!

I always do this.
We can just have a club of vain.
I always keep the LI and another random 'favorite' in my party, based on mood. I certainly pay no attention to who is most 'useful'. Couldn't care less.
