So I've managed to acquire 4 Drake Scales, 2 from the Silverite Mines and a further 2 from a random encouter as soon as I left the mines. Are they vendor trash or can they be crafted into something new?

I too found these Drake Scales, neither Wade or Herren said anything to me about them when they were spoken too. I'm guessing that 1 Drake Scale was just a default drop from a Drake in Origins, and they didn't change it in Awakening.
