That's probably because BioWare borrows quite a lot from other sci-fi universes like Star Trek and Star Wars.
It's also probably the first game to combine the elements of a shooter and an rpg into perfect harmony near-perfect harmony!
I don't think that's true for ME1... The combination of RPG and shooter is not well balanced and not even nearly as much fun as in ME2.
That's not to say I don't agree with the premise of the thread though. ME is awesome.

Compared to Dragon Age, Mass Effect feels much more cinematic. We're basically watching a movie--acting out the action scenes and influencing the dialogue a little bit, but for the most part we go where the story wants us to go and do (more or less) what it wants us to do.
You could argue it's the same in Dragon Age, but in DA there's so much more you can do with your companions. So many different ways the world could end up. Your goal is to defeat the Blight, but it's up to you to figure out how. And along the way your relationships with your companions can change in any number of ways.
I'm not going to argue that the two are vastly different (because they're not), but DA feels a lot more free and open, while ME feels a bit more directed and a bit confined when it comes to dealing with companions. You can only talk to them a few times without getting a "come back later" response, and any progress you make can only proceed when the game allows it to. And then it only comes to "fruition" at a certain moment, just like it would in a movie. And as a side note, it seems to be romance or loyalty and that's it. Whereas with DA you can hook up and break up several times at whatever pace you like, and with non-romanceable characters you can be anywhere on a spectrum of friendship, from barely standing each other to BFFs, instead of just flipping a loyal/disloyal switch.
Anyway, it might sound like I'm speaking badly about Mass Effect--I really do love the series. I just don't think "in-depth" is necessarily the best way to describe it.

I also like how ME refelcts on real world issues like racism, politics and organizations like Cerberus, how it doesn't take place that far away in the future, and how what is happeneing to humanity is what would probably happen to us if we discovered other races and began to expand out into the universe.
ME 2 is probably one of the more realistic scfi universes, hell there are even reasons for how people can even use biotics unlike the magical force in Star Wars.

I do agree with SirOccam though - there's not as much depth (in terms of character, companions, personal story) compared to past BioWare efforts, but for some reason I've been more transfixed by this game than any other.
I think it lies in the the potential and anticipation that arises from the fact that this is going to be a trilogy. We implicitly trust BioWare (and why shouldn't we?) to deliver a momentous gaming experience that will build and grow across three installments. (Not counting those who were exposed to Star Wars when it was first released in the 70's, before big-budget Sci-Fi soap operas) Would we have been half as pumped about Star Wars: A New Hope if we didn't glimpse "Episode IV" scrolling up the screen? The promise of a serialized story with multiple installments keeps us engaged, with all the tantalizing possiblities swirling around in our geeked-out heads.
Game's pretty great too, though.

Then I bought ME1.
It blew DA:O out of the water. Wow. Best. Game. Ever. In my 2nd playthrough, then will switch to ME2. Can't wait.

I completed the 2nd 1 back to back twice playing like 10 hours a day hah. I did 1 thing I didn't like , good excuse to play again and once again blow my mind!
I think what makes it so great is the story and the dedication to immersion and views of that setting. Simple as that. You got this amazing universe , the best characters you'll ever find , even in films , because in the games you tend to get to see more of them. Sure there's other amazing games out there and fabulous stories. Sometimes Square Enix churn out mind-blowing stories too and a few other companies , but they're always 1-game things really. Probably my favorite looking game series out there too. Strong enough technically to support some of the best design work ever leaving a visual joy of a game. Many games are just graphics or just art.
Both 1 and 2 had more instant-effects on me than any game I've ever played. 2 was SO deep and thoughtful. The character stories were so well done , Tali's especially ( I feel). And unlike many great games out there the Mass effect series so far has delivered endings that really impressed. I think my heart skipped a few beats at the end of 2 !!
You become so connected to the characters in the games , you can't stop until you know they'll be ok sometimes , it's a weird feeling : p Most personal game , book or film experience you're likely to have.
Thanx Bioware , respect

That's a fact. After two playthroughs of ME2 I went back to ME1 and played through it again just because I missed the mako, Kaidan, and wandering freely around planets. Not that I don't love ME2, but ME1 is #1 on my list still.

Even if ME 2 is a sleek and stunning predator of a game I still love ME 1 best for its epic main story.
ME 2 has lots of great stories, but the main story left a bit to be desired.

lol yeah if it weren't for 1 there wouldnt be any fuss for a 2. Plus I think the finialy battle of the first was abit more epic, it gave me goose bumps, especially when you choose the paragon choice, I rarely have a game that does that, and I miss working for the alliance, it was kinda a cool dual citizenship, between a spec and a military alliance, one of the things that made shepard very unquie, but how the second game turned out still makes the series even more engaging/unpredictable, since Shepard so far is working kinda solo

When I played through ME1 a second time around, I did so pretty much for the achievments alone and ended up disgusted with myself in the process. The mako rides you obviously found so facinating - I felt, with a few exceptions, were not only extremely boring and time consuming, but also annoying as heck. On the other side; the awesome combat in ME2 is sufficient grounds alone to make me want to pick up the game up again. Even after having completed it a few times over already. And it's still more fun than playing through ME1 ever was. At least that's my personal opinion.
Now for some real facts; ME2 is a polished diamond where ME1 was more than rough around the
edges. ME2 has been widely better received than it's predecessor indicating ME2 is objectively the superior game of the two.
