ME2 has nothin on ME1.

That's a fact. After two playthroughs of ME2 I went back to ME1 and played through it again just because I missed the mako, Kaidan, and wandering freely around planets. Not that I don't love ME2, but ME1 is #1 on my list still.

Don't confuse personal opinions as facts, sonny.

When I played through ME1 a second time around, I did so pretty much for the achievments alone and ended up disgusted with myself in the process. The mako rides you obviously found so facinating - I felt, with a few exceptions, were not only extremely boring and time consuming, but also annoying as heck. On the other side; the awesome combat in ME2 is sufficient grounds alone to make me want to pick up the game up again. Even after having completed it a few times over already. And it's still more fun than playing through ME1 ever was. At least that's my personal opinion.

Now for some real facts; ME2 is a polished diamond where ME1 was more than rough around the
edges. ME2 has been widely better received than it's predecessor indicating ME2 is objectively the superior game of the two.

The ME series started off on the right track, that being ME1. It is my favorite series this console generation. While graphically superior because it is the sequel, ME2 looks nice and shiny but the story and drive of ME1 places that daimond in the rough in my Top 5 game list.

i agree with the OP. the game just has so many little details and, to me, is pretty immersive. i love walking around the cities and just looking at stuff. sounds weird, but hey.

funny story. my dad heard about mass effect a few years ago from the whole fox news bit (the mass effect is a "sex simulator" story they ran). he was incredibly biased against it and was always complaining that i was playing this game (ME1).

a few months ago, i dropped off ME1 at his house and told him to play it a little... he was hooked. all he did in his spare time was play it. when ME2 was coming out, hes the one who was telling me to preorder it! hilarious haha.

i definitely love this game. i just wish it wasnt so short :\\

Both games are not perfect, but they are certainly amazing.

First series to get a brilliant science fiction story blended with role-playing and shooter combat right.

Goes without saying, I simply cannot wait for the third entry!

Thank you Bioware <3

Final Fantasy is my favorite series, but Mass Effect has really impressed me so far. Looking forward to the third installment, as it's becoming one of my favorite series.

I love Mass Effect. How BIOWARE does the story and dialog options really makes the game for me. BIOWARE really knows how to get me to buy games that I normally wouldn’t buy otherwise simply because of how they build their games! (Bought ME because I loved how SW:KOTOR was done). Definitely one purchase I don’t regret!

I know what you mean.  I bought DA:O, and loved it so much that I got ME.  And you know what?  I've loved ME even more.  Almost done with 2nd playthrough, and will go buy my copy of ME2 tomorrow.

I already know I'm staying TOTALLY faithful to Ashley!!!!  (but God help me, Miranda is hot, hot, hot...)

Indeed. I bought Dragon Age because I liked ME and KOTOR - so even if I'm not a huge fan of fantasy settings compared to sci-fi, I went for it (and didn't regret it :)

Rubbish, what real facts are you talking about exactly? ME2 for me, was just a very boring, over hyped sequel which I never care to play again. After Mass Effect it was just a case of Bioware "dumbing down the whole series" for a more general crowd of gamers i.e action/shooter fans and selling even more copies which they obviously achieved. But we will see if ME2 can stand the test of time like all great games CAN.

i feel like that let down from ME1 to ME2 was kindof needed. imagin if we started with ME2, then got ME1. our heads would ****ing explode of awesomeness by the time ME3 came out. so maybe bioware is doing us a favor by keeping us alive in order to play ME3. then ME3 will be the awesomest game anyone has ever played and everyones head will explode when they announce a prequil to ME1. i think my head already exploded.

i actually sorta missed the mako levels and diverse selection of weapons/armor. yes, they were both very time consuming to deal with, but so was planet scanning (to which i would have preferred the return of the mako without hesitation).

they added a larger sense of scale to the game. without em, the mass effect universe just seemed smaller in the sequel.

they're both good. there are some differences that makes one of this two Games more interesting to one type of gamers and it cant be denied. shooting has been enhanced, but I see the RPG sense is decreased a little.

the best upgrade is Loyalty missions that most of them have Paragon/Renegade choice. the Planet scanning is a fast way to find resources. Mako system was useless, only its Credits was worthy of it. but in ME2 we can use them for Armor, Biotics, Techs and Weapons Upgrades.

You and me both. Mako broke up the action and gave us some fresh air and a sense of scale... when it wasn't a planet with vertical cliffs. I've played plenty of MMO's too, so I greatly enjoy getting loots. Getting that sick piece of gear unexpectedly is great, but the fat needed to be trimmed.

The world definitely shrunk in ME2. There is a lack of long, persistent missions. ME1 had Feros, Noveria, Virmire, Ilos, even your first couple of hours on the Citadel were amazing (Though I'm sure some would disagree on this. Not everyone has a penchant for spending your first 3 hours talking). Everything in ME2 feels too tight, too concise, too stripped down. There are no epic set pieces.

Aside from that though (), ME2 took ME1's greatest weakness (The combat), polished the hell out of it and tightened everything else up. Let's just hope they take the strengths of both and smash them together, so, like The Spamming Troll said, our heads can explode and we can venture to the great beyond... which is hopefully waking up to the gentle humm of a drive core before staring the window of your quarters as you approach the Citadel.:D

By the way, I must agree OP. Mass Effect 3 will seal the series' spot as my number one franchise in gaming. Hopefully, anyways.

I agree with the part reguarding the improvement of combat i really enjoy the combat in me 2 as the combat in me 1 was as frequent , but i think it gives a good balance between combat & conversations , as it gives you chance to talk things throught instead of shooting everything up.

Also reguarding the mako i dont know why they took the mako away but they could have atleast keep the planet exploration in ME2 but "livended" abit so to speak..

I would also like to see a bigger choice of squad customization in me 3 :wizard:

Lovin the romances hehe:whistle::wub:

I don't consider myself an RPG fan; in fact I hate most of them due to the whole turn-based combat thing. I bought ME1 over a year ago, mainly because it was on a clearance rack for $12, brand new. I figured because it was cheap and got really good ratings, maybe I'd change my mind.

Well, things came up and other games came out and I never got around to it. Weeks became months, until I looked up and all the hype from ME2 started to hit me. So, in January of this year, I figured I'd better try to play this Mass Effect thing, if I wanted to have any clue about this new improved ME2. So, I put ME1 in my Xbox......and it hooked me faster than crack.

Since then, I've played ME1 thru 3 times and am halfway thru my second playthrough on ME2. This series is simply amazing. The story is great; the combat is fun (not turn-based!!!) and the whole universe is interesting. I now understand why all the RPG fans love BioWare. I can't wait until ME3!

So, yeah, I agree with the OP...

The amazing thing about Bioware is that this company always manages to produce amazing games. Granted none of them are perfect but they get closer than anybody else.

I got hooked by KotOR and Jade Empire (never understood why it wasn't a greater hit).

Only later I decided to try NW. I never finished the game but the toolset was fantastic and there were amazing mods out there.

DA and ME are highly addictive, too. However in my opinion, they both have serious weaknesses:

I agree with many of the posts here, that ME lacks depth in certain areas. Admittedly, the universe is great and so is the main storyline with its twists. On the other hand, the side-quests are often shallow and the companions would have profitted from more lines and subplots.

With DA it's the other way around, the weakness lies in the main plot (at least, in my opinion): after Ostagar up to the Landsmeet the main story gets pretty boring (collect allies who are nothing but trouble). Another thing I never understood: If the Archdemon is an old god why doesn't he come up with a more suttle plan? Why not manipulate and let Ferelden doom itself (Sovereign wouldn't have passed on the opportunity presented by Loghain's treason)? The lack of an overall goal, any kind of vision was disappointing. What does darkspawn want except mayhem?

In my opinion, bad guys get interesting when they have some twisted vision of a better world (like Master Li in Jade Empire) or are compelled by their fears/personality (like Saren or Loghain).

But hey, I am complaining about two games which deserve praise more than anything else.

Mass Effect is probably now my favorite franchise next to Silent Hill.

I loved both of the games and although IMO I still think the first game is the best mostly due to the story. I played ME1 again just to get the rest of those ally achievements and when I got to Illos I realized why I loved ME1 so much. Its one of my favorite games I ever played.

I do love ME2 also but not as much as ME1. The combat is polished and the voice acting is top notch. However, I do find ME2 has much more replaybility then ME1 for myself anyways and have been playing it since I got it on February 1st on and off.

ME2 is the only game I have ever played for 23hrs straight and felt like I was only playing it for an hour. It really sucked me into the universe.

Edit: I should note I hate sci-fi. I hate Star Trek and Star Wars so Bioware has definletely done something right to get me to love their sci-fi type of game.

ME 1 sets the stage introduce you to some characters and what's going on in the galaxy.
ME 2 answered some questions further escolated some of the conflicts to a new stage.
ME 3 will pretty much be all hell break loose.  Major conflicts between different groups will hit the climax while the reapers found a way back.

You have to play through the first game a few times and then play through the second game a few times to fully explore all possiblities.  The story is even better depends on what your choices are in ME 1.  An example is Wrex.  If you killed him, things aren't the same in ME2 and certainly not in ME3.  But if you didn't kill Wrex, he became the clan leader, and he turned his attention to uniting the Krogen clans.

When your done wiht ME 2, it leave you with many unanswered questions.  Such as who is the shadow broker, what will happen between Liara and the shadow broker?

What will happen to Wrex and the Krogens?

The Qurians is going to war with the Geth reclaming their home world.  Will Shepherd have to choice or defuse the situation?

What's going on with Haestrom sun?  Will this be another way for the return of the reapears?  Who is behind this now that the collectors are delt with.

Who really is the illusive man?  What exactly is the illusive man's motive?  Is he truely doing it for the best intersts of humanity?  Or does this guy have an ultimate unthinkable plan in the work?

Why are the Collectors building a human reaper? What will happen to this technology whether or not the base is destroyed?

What about the ancient mass accelerator weapon found by Cerberus?

The racni queen you let go delivered a message to you in ME2 but what role will they play in ME3?

That a lot of I want to know above.  Like watching a good show, you wanted to know more.  The writer and the game certainly delivered and it leaves the fans wondering what will happen in ME3.

Will the whole galaxy unit under one baner against the reaper's return?

The best experience will be to play through the entire game from the first ME to the third ME.  Unfortunately, that won't be possible any time soon.

Yeah! When I've tried Mass Effect 1 I started loving it: the world is characterised very well and it's like you can "live inside the game". With Mass Effect 2 I've just had an orgasm.

After Operation Flashpoint, this series is my favourite one. I thought the good games were going to die but Mass Effect made me change my idea...Thank you, Bioware!

I have been really struggling to get into Mass effect 1. It is a very difficult game to play (for me anyway) which hasnt helped, but also I don't really feel very connected to my character or what is happening to her. I don't know why that is. I guess I was expecting it to be more like Dragon Age and it really isnt anything like it at all.

I'm not saying it is bad, btw, just that I dont seem to be able to connect with it.

I have to agree to OP.

I've always wanted to try out ME ever since I got DA:O for x'mas last year. DA:O was the 1st Bioware game I've played and it blew me away completely, so I knew I had to check out the ME series. I'm really glad I did. I love both ME1 and 2.

Story wise, ME1 is more in depth as it is the beginning of a story and you get to learn what the whole universe of the game is about. I can understand why the story of ME2 seems to be lacking compared to ME1, as you already know the universe and there's not as much new material for you to explore without throwing you off track as you are being setup towards the finale of the trilogy. ME2 is only a transition point in the storyline, but I think the more refined gameplay makes up for it. I just wish I didn't have to do that whole planet scanning thing. I'd drive the mako any time over scanning.

Besides, I don't remember playing any other games that got me sitting on the edge of my seat screaming "This is epic!!" to my husband. I was so completely blown away by the Omega 4 Relay sequence.
