I am making this thread because I recently discovered a way to play at a high resolution (1920 x 1080p) and maintain a high framerate (over 40fps) while recording a high quality video using fraps even with an average computer. Many people have complained about not being able to make videos because their frames drop so low while recording that they can't aim properly. My computer specs are a 2.4ghz quad core, 4gb ram, geforce 260 core 216 video card, and a 1920 x 1080 resolution computer screen. In the past, I was lowering my resolution to 1280 x 720p and recording at full screen on fraps. This was very annoying because 1280 x 720 rescaled to a 1920 x 1080 monitor just looks so much worse than playing in the native resolution 1920 x 1080. Here is how I fixed the problem:

Set fraps to record in half size and it will boost your frame rates tremendously. I also set video capture settings to 60 fps. Once the video is recorded, use video editing software such as virtual dub to change the resolution to whatever you want (I change it to 720p). This allows you to play in much higher resolutions at higher frame rates while recording. Up until today I have been playing at 720p on my 1080p monitor so that I could record with good frames per second, and it was really annoying because the graphics were ugly. Now I can play in 1080p while recording with good frame rates and still produce 720p videos. I am recording in 1920 x 1080 at half size which is 960 x 540, then resizing the 960 x 540 fraps video to 1280 x 720 using virtual dub. This results in a 720p high definition video that is of excellent quality while I am playing at 1920 x 1080p with 40-60 frames per second or more.

-Play the game in your favorite and highest resolution (I play at 1920 x 1080p)
-Set fraps to record at half size at 60fps
-Use virtual dub to compress (DivX) the fraps video file into a resized (720p) 30fps video

Feel free to add to this thread with more great suggestions regarding video recording and editing.

This is a re-post, so if you've already read this, feel free to skip through. Those are usefull tips however, so if you're new to fraps or you're experiencing slow downs or FPS drops, try them out and let us know if they help.

A few tips for people who are new to Fraps and want to improve performance:

- The most usefull thing that will boost your frames a lot is having your game/OS/fraps on 1 HD and tell fraps to save the video to a secondary hard drive. The faster the 2nd hard drive, the better. Unless you want to record at 60FPS 1080p, and you'll need some sick drives in RAID 0 for that.

- Fraps is CPU/hard drive dependent so the faster those 2 are, the better your frames will be.

- Turn off anti-aliasing & anisotrophic filtering when recording. It will greatly boost performance and decrease your recorded file size. You can apply filters in editing software later on (I know Vegas has that option) to smooth out jaggies. Note: I don't follow this cause I like to play with eyecandy.

- Set up Fraps affinity on different cores than the ones the game is using. In my Case, due to HT technology, there are 8 threads running simultaneously. ME2 only uses 5 of them. Setting the affinity of Fraps to use the other 3 boosts performance dramatically. Morale of the story: split up your CPU usage between Fraps and ME2 to allow sufficient power for both. Experiment till you have best performance. Setting up fraps64.exe or fraps32.exe to a high priority as a process also seems to help.

Hope you find that usefull!

I just use a massive monitor, and play ME2 in a 720p borderless window.

I prefer a smaller viewing area for shooters anyway, 'cos my twitch is optimised when my eyeballs don't have to move as much.

The quickest and easiest way I've found to compress FRAPS gameplay videos meant for YouTube is using Avidemux. I choose FLV1 for video codec, Configure bitrate to 9000 kb/s and set Format to FLV. Compression won't take hours, and YouTube will also be pretty quick to process the video. HD will likely look great, and lower resolutions quite decent. File size can be a bit large for longer videos (but so can long DivX/xvid gameplay videos that look anyway decent be), but for the most part I've been really happy with the quality.

FLV is so ... 90s. DivX ... 00s.

Me, I started using H.264 + AAC, and haven't looked back.

So if H.264 + AAC is so 2008, are you saying I'm so 2000 and late?

I apologize for necroing this thread, but better then creating a new one for the same reason.

I created a video tutorial for recording in Fraps and rendering videos for HD quality on youtube.

Check it out here: Fraps Recording and VirtualDub Rendering Tutorial

I also give some specific tips to recording in Mass Effect 2 in this tutorial.

Nice tutorial though I didn't noticed much difference on performance switching to half-size recording. I will try configuring the cpu's like you did and see what happens - like the accent ;)

Thanks to Systemlord Baal for giving me the heads up about this thread. Very much what I need right now. Will check out everything when I get home tonight. Have pretty much the same problem. So thanks in advance for the information.

I use pinnacle studio 14 HD, and I set the conversion to the highest I can, which is also 1920x1080.

The raw (rawr!) video is good quality, but when I convert/edit it through pinnacle studio 14 hd, no matter what setting, it crappifies (thats my technical term) the quality. Is it my movie editor?

Edit:
At MPEG2, 1920x1080, 12000 kbits/sec, 29.97 frams/sec.

My fraps was set a 60.

The FPS is good, but the quality dumbed down.

I'm not the expert but it sounds more like the codec you are using is crap. Was just a thought tho. I am actually getting pretty good results when converting my files to wmv which surprises me since the actual filesize is only a small piece of the original file size, yet the quality of the video is the same I had during the game.

PS: And i'm only using movie maker for converting avi to wmv.
