If you are indeed capable of understanding English, then the sequence of responses to direct questions in this conversation indicates that yes; couple does indeed mean lovers.

You may need this: http://dictionary.reference.com/

You may need to read David Gaider's responses a few more times.

When I first walked into Wade's shop in Denerim, I suspected that he and Herren were a couple right away. Herren, not so much, but Wade and his mannerism's tipped me off right away. Herren's frustrations with Wade after he would speak confirmed it for me.

They're actually quite cute.

As you are Swedish, I understand that you must use a reference occasionally to understand English properly.

Let me assure you that, as a native English speaker, I am able to discern subtleties that you may not.

Trust me when I say that in this context, "couple" implicitly insinuates "lovers" - and so Wade and Herren are not only a couple, but they are also lovers.

I do understand how foreign our language may be to you at times, but at least you have friendly folk who are willing to patiently help you overcome this difficult barrier.

:)

"Lovers" is usually used in the sense of sexual partners, even though it doesn't necessarily mean that. That's probably what he means. "Couple" by itself does not specifically denote anything sexual. You can be a couple even if you're asexual.

When nobdy's looking both of them disappear in the next barn to proceed with their dirty business.

What, you didn't know?

The fact that Wade and Herren are clearly in a homosexual relationship is irrelevant. I'm merely arguing semantics here.

Semantically, it's true; but it still implies a romantic relationship, even if sex is not included.

Ahh yes, "Semantics." the meaning, or an interpretation of the meaning, of a word, sign, sentence.

We have dismissed that claim.

Are we moving into "it's okay for them to be gay as long as they don't have sex" territory?

I suppose maybe I am sometimes overzealous in my railing against perceived stereotypes. Not all homosexuals in DAO are eccentric/flamboyant like Wade, after all, nor are all eccentric/flamboyant individuals in DAO homosexual (although I can't think of many others who fit that description, TBH.. perhaps the lyrium-addled dwarf in Orzammar). I guess one of those would have to be the case for it to fit my original estimation. Even then, I think the case being made was not necessarily about Wade's flamboyance (although I'm sure that's part of it), but rather, it was about the way Wade and Herren bicker with each other, and such.

In any case, yes, I agree with the others, Wade and Herren are a fun addition to the DA universe.

BioWare is openingly confirming a pure homosexual relationship in their game.

Yeah I definitely got the vibe in Awakening. (Not so much in Origins though ^^). Good on David and Bioware for supporting equal rights in Fereldan :)

Agree with both of these.

I thought it was fairly obvious, in Awakening especially.  Very glad to see Bioware haven't given in to the bigots.

Huh...I'd never have thought that.  I thought Wade was just a brilliant (if whiny) artist and Herren was the tool who was taking advantage of the fact that Wade only cared about his art.

Well...whatever.  Makes no difference to me. :D

I definitely enjoy them as characters, although I don't know if I really like the stereotyping. The issue with it is that while it's certainly not an unrealistic depiction, it's also one of the only depictions that we see in games and the media at large. I feel as if it would be more progressive to simply have them (Wade especially) behave as any others, not effeminate caricatures bordering on self-parody.

Also, although he's a decent voice actor, I have to say that Cam Clarke really gets on my nerves... he keeps on showing up in BioWare games and I can tell it's him no matter how much he tries to disguise his voice. I'm not saying get rid of him, but more variety please.

My disappointment is in the perpetuation of a rather trite stereotype, not in the fact that I see gay people.

You found them trite? I found them amusing... :D

Ah, well. Can't please everyone.

It may be a stereotype, but I have seen that sort of behaviour and expression so many times among gay couples that I know. Utterly camp.

Well, if you're arguing semantics... to say that two people are "a couple" does, in fact, imply that they are lovers/ romantically involved. You can qualify the noun "couple" with the preposition "of," and at that point you could say that you're no longer talking about two people in a romantic relationship...

Frank and Steve are a couple.
Frank and Steve are a couple of surfers.

...Two sentences with very different meanings.

I think it was pretty obvious when Wade spoke about how Herren complains he sometimes gets too excited with his "hammer".

Hmm...

Anyway, I don't think promoting stereotypes - such as gays being flamboyant (Zevran) or outright feminine (Wade and Herren) - is the way to go. Things would be different if their games had some masculine gay/bi characters, as well. Have they included such a character, ever?
