I'm still not understanding how such a lacking company won over the likes of BioWare. Seriously guys?

Uh, wrong end of the stick with Portal. The employed the guys who did Narbacular drop and then set them to work on a game that tied into the HL Universe.
And they brought onboard the TF and CS people to work for them, rewarding community ingenuity.
Bioware excluded some of their community in the whole Bazaar fiasco.
Oh, and tonnes of people disagree with you with regards to L4D1/2, I find them great fun, but then, I have good friends to enjoy it with.
And of course L4D2 is a "rip off". It's a bloody sequel. By that token ME2 is a rip off.

Alright:
Here's Valve...
Halflife - loved it, pretty good game, but is way beyond stale.
HL2 - Was a cool game, liked it, but wouldn't put it up there with my faves. Wasn't even interested enough to finish episode 1 - when it came out - nor episode 2. - I see no real replay value in either of these games, but they were cool on the first run through.
Left 4 Dead - A cool game, for about a day or two.
Left 4 Dead 2 - A blatant ripoff.
TF2 - Originally a mod for Quake/HL, stolen by Valve.
Portal - A gimmicky puzzle game originally developed by people other than Valve, then bought.
SO.
Valve has about 2 games they've actually come up with themselves?
Unless I'm missing something here, this is what I mean by lacking. And please, if you count Steam, I'll punch you in the virtual jeans. Direct2Drive/EA Downloader(whatever it's called)/GFWL do the same thing.

Steam did it before them, and is currently the most successful DD gaming service in the world.
You're confusing your own personal opinion of their products, with how reality actually is. To you "HL2" is a "cool game but not one of your personal faves". To the rest of the world it's one of the best selling most critically acclaimed PC games of all time that revolutionized story telling in games. Same goes for the orginal "HL". This is like asking "what has George Romero done of interest, aside from the Dead trilogy?". Nothing much, but that's enough to make him a legend all the same.
All of your assessments of their products are off. So it's no wonder why you don't think highly of them. Actually research the company and their products, then come back here.
