Actually there is no canon Shepard. And I've done a lot of experimenting with the game, both genders provide equal exposition.voteDC wrote...
I always took it as the fact that since the male Shepard is the cannon for the Mass Effect universe, that writing a female Shepard story gives a person more scope for interpretation.
Shep to Femshep ratio?!

Yeah, I didn't ever play femshep in ME1, but I gave it a try in ME2. I can play either one really now. I still think the voice thing has to do with one's own gender's vocal inflections and relating to it. Other than the LI's there isn't much difference playing the two other than appearance I think. With the male Shep I will use default and custom. With Femshep I always use custom.Flies_by_Handles wrote...
As a woman I have spent much of my time playing as a male character--willingly and unwillingly given the state of things--yet I have had no problem relating to male characters. I'm a little puzzled as to why some people can't find it in themselves to play as a different gender. Role playing is just that.....role playing and how unfortunate it would be to not imagine being something else in game or at least find some way to relate.
That said, I find Mark Meer's voice acting to be aggravating and off putting. If the male Shepard had a better voice and face options that do not resemble a simian-like abomination, then I would jump at the chance of an alternate playthrough.

In a 3rd person game, would you rather stare at the backside of a man or a woman?Slidell505 wrote...
Chicks usually draw more than guys so it makes sense that they'd make more fan art. Also allot of guys play chicks in games not sure why.
Fortunately I'm not self-conscious of my sexuality so I don't have to worry about Sheploo's ass turning me gay.

So true! I enjoy a well written character and game regarless of gender. It doesn't bother me in the slightest to play as Gordan Freeman or the Prince of Persia or Wander (Shadow of the Colossus).
But at the same time, if I'm given the option to be female I'm going to take it, since it's reletively rare.

Hah! It's a shame that the female default Shep got the short end of the stick when it comes to appearance. I think there are a couple of groups here in support of her regardless.
@SleepyBird: Those are good examples of male characters. A couple of other ones I connected to are Solid Snake and that boy from Ico.

Yes I would personally agree that in regards to Femshep, I gotta customize.Flies_by_Handles wrote...

That may be one reason why I'm having difficulty getting into Dragon Age:Origins. Thus far I can't create a character that looks interesting enough. Now I sound incredibly shallow!

That's it. Given the choice, I'd pick a female character, however - in ME/ME2 it's because of Jennifer Hale.

That would make sense. Women like to socialize more then men probably.enormousmoonboots wrote...
There's more Femshep fanstuff because fandom--at least, the productive part of fandom--has always been female-dominated. I've never been in a fandom where I could refer to a stranger as 'he' by default and not be wrong more than 50% of the time.
Certainly if talking on the phone is any indication.

The fact that the ad campaign featured ONLY Guyshep and never Jennifer's Hale's excellent Femshep really annoyed a lot of us, so I think that's why there's so much Femshep fanart out there.BlackFlameGhost wrote...
I wonder, I see a lot... A LOT of Femshep fanart, short stories and the like... its like Sheps are rare and Femsheps rule the world o.o
Another question... how many Femsheps are actually female on the stick?
BioWare ignores Femshep, so the fanbase creates it's own art to fill the void.
Spot on. The best way to create a rapid fanbase for something is for corporates to ignore it.

Awesome!
Well I understand "role play" (DnD Nerd or at least trying to be... bought my own set of dice recently!) But I find it more... immerse, more filling to role a character of my own gender, it feels smoother to me if that makes any sense. Beside's I'm the type of guy that is a guy even at my core, I'd thing boobs would get in the way of my Assault Rifle or Sword o.o (May be true in some cases but still XD)
so my Shep is always a guy, always a Paragade, and always a Vanguard (I refuse to play any other class) Always Earthborn Always Warhero and always always always the type that will ask a question and shoot all at the same time =D

2. Malesheps fit better in story.

In the end, male or female main characters for video games for is based upon whether i think said voice actor fits the role they are trying to fill or not as the main character. I tend to go with the most believably or what i think best fits the role of the character.

Heh, I have to agree - a fault of the character creator.
I think I could count on one hand the number of FemShep's that actually managed to overcome that and come out good looking.
