I had the opposite experience. I started out trying a custom male Shepard in ME1 and couldn't get one to look like he hadn't been dragged face first across the desert. I was able to knock out a decent looking femshep first try. Then I got hooked on Jennifer Hale's voice work (found Meer's lackluster) and now I can't imagine Shepard as anything but female.
I will say that Meer did a GREAT job with renegade voice in ME2, the Commander Shepard is Still a Jerk video is super!
Meer's renegade work in ME1 was actually pretty good too. Meer does badass better than Hale.
But Hale does -all- aspects of Shepard exceptionally well.
I have a hard time making a FemShep that -doesn't- have a duckmouth. All FemSheps I see have this weird protruding mouth thing, and it's really tricky to get rid of it in the character creator - also, most FemSheps I see seem to be very generic and similar looking, whereas it's very easy to make a crew of hardass crew-cut MaleSheps that all look different.

Of course I'm not using any actual science here. Just my Jedi powers as taught to me by Jeff Bridges.

That stupid mouth duck face thing annoys me so much on my FemShep especially when you get a side angle of her.
Well as a female I did play the default male Shepard in ME1 the first time because I didn't know you could make custom Shepards. I thought he was actually rather cute and didn't mind his voice work. However, in my second playthrough I went ahead and made a FemShep that looked like me and now I can't ever go back to playing as Shep.
If I have the choice of what gender to be in a game it depends. When I play Fallout 3 I always choose male because for some reason playing a female character in that game doesn't fit the role IMO. Plus the female characters look terrible anyways.
But when I played Dragon Age: Origins I picked a female character.

Human Noble and City Elf
City Elf is my personal favorite. Nothing like instant revenge, felt WAY better than when you get it from Howe

I assume based on the disappointing Sheploo-only marketing it probably something like 90% male playing as male, but I hope I'm wrong about that.
I'd be interested to know how many people play as male only, female only or both. But I'd not be surprised if people playing a 'Sheploo' would be a minority. BioWare may promote Sheploo as a 'canon' Shepard, but not MY Shepard, or yours maybe.
I wonder why people would play as Sheploo seriously. They give you an option to create your own character. If you can't, ouch...
Sheploo is the man!

Jennifer Hale does such a wonderful job, paragon, renegade or just a mix ... she's totally a badass.
So Femshep all the way.
I may try a male shepard just see how he's doing with Tali or Miranda though (all those romances that everyone is talking about), but for now still 2 playthrough plus the first not finished yet with Julia,Jewel and Jennifer
I'm female btw

pfft femsheps, laughable
Shepard is clearly intended to be a male. He's a male in every single trailer, every advertisement, and all game related art. There's a reason I've never made a female Shepard and never will.

However I do appreciate that players were given a choice in genders.
