I always play a male Shep.

The idea of some hormonal chick saving the known universe is preposterous. I mean seriously, we are going to give someone who can't even master parallel parking the keys to the Normandy? :P

I don't know.  Having Vanilla Ice save the universe sounds pretty preposterous to me.  :P

Shepard is clearly intended to be a male.  He's a male in every single trailer, every advertisement, and all game related art.  There's a reason I've never made a female Shepard and never will.

There is no such thing as a 'intended' Shepard. That Shepard you see there? It's for friggin' marketing purposes. NOTHING ELSE. The BIG SELLING POINT of Mass Effect is that it's YOUR story, it's YOUR canon, it's YOUR Shepard. Please tell me your irrefutable evidence which tells you Shepard is supposed to be a guy. Because s/he isn't. S/he's whoever you want him/her to be. I'll show you canon Shepard:

Shepard is a redheaded woman who let the Council die and saved the Rachni. Shepard is a brown-haired, bearded ruthless maniac who lost his family in a raider attack and became infamous on Torfan. Shepard is a blond-haired war hero who let Ashley Williams die on Virmire and one of the few believers in God. Shepard is whoever you want Shepard to be. This argument aggravates me as if male Shepard players think all they need to do is point out 'well a male Shepard is used for marketing' and suddenly it's Gangbusters and that's all they need to say. I have no issues with MaleShepard whatsoever. Three of my six Shepards are males, and I have no issues with Meer's voice, but holy CRAP, don't throw that at me. It's a useless argument and adds nothing to a debate.

I'm a femShep, and a female. My husband is a male manShep. He doesn't get into fanfics or anything like that. I do. That's all I can do to explain.

Here some results from XX55XX's character poll, which I consider the only somewhat representative ME2 poll made (for the reason that it was up for some time and it appeared early after ME2 release, so the forums weren't populated mostly by hardcore fans like now):

Male to female players ratio:

709 male (83%), 148 female (17%) players

Players who play the opposite gender:

134 male (19% of all male), 16 female (11% of all female) players

Conclusion:

(148-16) = 132 female players playing femSheps
134 male players playing femSheps

For a sum of 266 femSheps (31%) to 591 maleSheps (69%)

I thank you for that Ieldra, really pretty much answered my question.

Well we are who we are, and play what we want. I love games that give you the option of creating a character to let you loose in the universe. It takes very creative writing for someone to create a world and a character that is so gray and baseless someone else can pick up and freely mold them into their own. Which... is a reason it pisses me off people say "XXX sucks because he has no substance." XXX is YOUR CHARACTER he'll have as much substance as YOU want him to have. And you point out the single writer that can write up every word, every response, and every emotion for every single freaking gamer that has lived, will live and is living. No. Wont happen.

On a side note... I also love characters who are set and definite yet even when playing them you can relate to some aspect of their character in some way. That takes equally skilled writing. I mean, look at everyone playing ME and ME2 and genuinely loved or hated an NPC. Wrex, Liara, Garrus, Tali, Ashley, Joker, Kaiden... The Turian Counselor, TIM, Freaking Sovereign and Harbinger.

Its all writing, and its all peoples opinions and choices.

Game on Sheps game on =D

I always figured these numbers were the most likely, give or take of course.

Well, for me, I always end up doing two maleshep and two femshep playthroughs, so I guess I keep the percentages the same? lol

Femsheps are definately the most vocal and involved in the Mass Effect community. There are likely many many sheps that don't bother to use the forums and whatnot.

But by all fairness, femshep deserves more attention considering the violently loyal fanbase she has.

I agree with that. I mean I'm cool with them using one Shep (in this case MaleShep) for things like the launch and story trailers since it helps to maintain a sort of consistency and continiuity within the marketing but there's no reason for no FemShep in gameplay trailers and the like.

Wow, you don't have to take it so personally. I stated my opnion, no need to go into rant mode. It'd be hard to create a movie spinoff invoking every single player's creation wouldn't it?  There has to be a canon Shepard, otherwise any kind of books, movies, etc. would be impossible to create.  Correct? There is a Canon Shepard.  His face is Mark Vanderloo, his name is John Sheaprd, he is male, he has the Earth Born Background and Sole Survivor Profile, his class is a Soldier. That's what happens when you don't customize Shepard at all, and stick with the default settings. So, clearly, this is the original, unedited, canon Shepard.

There's picture out there featuring male Shepard, Wrex and Garrus in rendition of Manet's Olympia. Male Shepard fanart may be rare but it... delivers Posted Image

In games where you have a choice such as ME and Dragon Age I'd say I'm about 3/2 male to female. As in if I play the game 5 times I'll have played male 3 times to every 2 female. It's definetly worth giving the game a try as either sex, brings a slightly different flavour to the game and the voice acting change is a nice change as well.

I'm a guy and I have 2 maleshep (one renegade, one paragon), and 2 femsheps (1 renegade, one paragon).

I started with a custom femshep and that is my main character so far.  Easier on the eyes.

I'm male and play both genders, but I have to say I like Mark Meer's voice acting a LOT more than Hale's. She wa sokay in the first game, but in ME2 it felt like she was overacting a lot and forcing any 'badasness'. The speech on Tali's loyalty mission, paragon and renegade, made me want to cry of embarassment.

And because there's a canon Shepard, BioWare goes through great lengths to avoid revealing what Shepard looks like or his/her gender as reflected in Ascension and the comic. Have you read the books? Ascension makes only passing note of Shepard, doesn't reveal the fate of the Council and doesn't note anything about the gender or race or origin of him/her.
And who says a movie of Mass Effect *has* to center around Shepard? That would just ruin the games the same way the RE movies did reveling in total inaccuracy and 'Hollywoodification'. It's a big universe with tons of places to visit. Maybe the First Contact War, or the story of another Spectre.
Canon =/= default. Default Shepard is for people who want to be stuck with the supreme ugliness that is Mark Vanderloo and can't bother with the character creation process.

I find Mark Vanderloo a bit weird to look at in some shots, but in that one shot that they clearly based the Shepard model off of he looks fine.

I think anyone that says objectively Shepard is ugly is being silly.
