After a dozen playthroughs as an Infiltrator, I decided to break away from my comfort zone and try Vanguard. I don't do close combat, I don't like shotguns, the thought of my health getting below 10% at any time makes me nervous... but Charge looked like so much fun!

Not only did I try Vanguard, I decided after playing ME2 on nothing more than Veteran, I should go for Insanity. Because if I'm going to put myself through hell, why not go all the way? I tried Insanity with an Infiltrator and ended up more frustrated than anything else, which wasn't worth it.

So far, Vanguard's been incredibly fun. Even though I spend more time reloading than actually staying alive due to the masochistic addiction of using Charge. The novelty factor and the sense of accomplishment when it all goes right probably keeps me going.

Tonight I found myself spending a ridiculously long amount of time going through Korlus before deciding to give it a rest. I found myself playing one section repeatedly because I kept getting slammed with heavy weapons at a place where Charge would do me no good. I cursed Garrus and Zaeed for failing as snipers as I yearned for one of my own rifles so I could end the onslaught once and for all.

It was two hours before I remembered I had a grenade launcher strapped to my back. What can I say, I never used heavy weapons as an Infiltrator. Still. Two hours.

Yup you're a massochist, if insanity made you angry with your bread and butter class, going into it as a vanguard rookie spells certain doom. I played vanguard on hardcore a couple times through before I went towards insanity with ng+, I still die plenty but I have a better feel for the controls and how to use my charge (thanks to the many vanguard threads) as well as some pretty sweet builds (thanks to sabresandiego)
Insanity is rough to begin with, I can't imagine how frustrated I would have been if I went straight to insanity with my rookie vanguard. Take Miranda and Mordin, their powers come in quite handy for those mercs on Korlus on the catwalks.

Welcome to the Vanguard life.  And there is always a way to Charge....  always!  Check this out:

ME2 - How not to Play a Vanguard 2

Grunt's recruitment mission is one of the funnest missions for me.

And here I thought I was a masochist, playing an insanity vanguard with only Pistols and SMGs.

As it turned out, the shuriken was surprisingly effective.

^_^ You sound like my kind of people. But I challenge you at being the worst vanguard - I haven't played a shooter since uh... yeah since the first CoD I believe and my aim sucks. Even though they're usually right in front of my face. Like your experience on Korlus, I spent probably similar amount of time with Jack recruitment mission at first - the game gave up and cut the battle short. And it was on casual difficulty.

My vanguard is stuck. 8-/ I'm not able to finish the first mission with Miranda and Jacob after meeting TiM. Where you meet up with Tali for the first time. I'm stuck at the heavy mech getting my arse handed to me.

@Heavy mech in Freedom's Progess

1. Easy-mode

Go with your squad into the building to your left and destroy it, as it's too dumb to walk into it.

2. Vanguard

Charge it immediately when it shoots its first rocket. Shoot it once or twice and run like hell to your next cover position (The ramp into Veetor's shack or the buildings to your right and left). Repeat.

you can just stay at the box you start behind and circle it while the mech circles it and shoot it in bursts. ive found thats how i beat most mechs and those flying reaper bugs. just find a structure you can circle around and shoot while you circle the box. i had a really hard time on NG+ with my sentinel and started a ME1 import soldier and insanity became a cakewalk.

I prefer to run into the building that Tali is in ..

Then just sit at the window with the SMG, button mash with the shuriken whenever the mech stops shooting.

Use the predator (with incendiary ammo) to take most of its armour off, then switch to shotgun and charge/shoot/melee it to death.

From infiltrator to vanguard - been there. Fell in love with charge, but wasn't brave enough to keep charging. Next playthrough - focused on getting heavy charge. Kept charging, kept charging but always smart about it, always cover just in case. Kept charging like it was an addiction. Charged so much it glitched the whole game up even... even crashes. Charged the colossus, piece of cake first run (watched vids first). Kept charging. Argh... can't charge the final boss, what a pain in the...

Ne ways... on unchargeable heavies. Too bad, whip out your carnifex. Hate that...

EDIT: Heavy Mechs:
Play "Peekaboo!"

Image IPBOnly thing to worry about is it's right arm (the machine gun)

I've gone from Worst Vanguard Ever to Middling Vanguard! It was great pride to make it through Samara's entire recruitment mission without dying once. Who's the pulpy mass now, ****?

Now that I've used Charge a million times over, I've managed to suppress the urge to use it anywhere anytime. While managing a suicidal spree on the twelfth attempt is still good for a laugh, clearing a room is better.

I have also learned the value of running around the battlefield like a spaz or playing peakaboo around a crate. This has been the more difficult skill to learn for someone who is used to meticulously setting up sniper shots.
