Did you get your third specialization point?

When I heard that there were gonna be new specializations and a third specialization point given so that you can try em out, I was excited as hell. I really wanted to try spirit guardian on my warrior. However when I imported my character from DAO, at around level 21 I think, I did not get a third specialization point at level 22, and this is the same for my companions, most of them are >lvl 22, but only have a total of 2 spec points. Is this supposed to happen (cos I remember reading in the faq that a third spec point will be given at lvl 22), or is it a glitch in my game. If so, is there any way to add a spec point via console or something? I really want to try out the new specializations, and it seems a waste if my main character can't have one.

This is strange. I imported my level 24/25 characters over and they started with one - as did all my party members. What system are you on? Do you use mods? Its possible one of them may be causing an incompatibility (I had one that meant armor runes didn't show up, so a missing spec point isn't unfeasible).

No, but it's possible one of the three mods I left enabled when I started A prevented from getting it.

I disabled most but left three enabled because I considered them 'indispensable'. Little did I know one of them would generate an 'invisawall' that kept me from finishing the game.

Anyway, there was an Add Points Through Console mod that added a console command to add spec points; it doesn't work in A (AFAIK).

You want your third spec point, DA Beguiler can give it to you. And if you're a really dirty cheater who wants their ubergod char with every spec regardless of logical/rp inconsistency, yes, it could give you a fourth, fifth, or sixth.

I'm on the pc. And it might be possible that mods are causing this, yes, but most of my mods are DAO-specific, in fact I think only 3 mods carried over to Awakening. The only mod I had active (in DAO) that affected specializations was the Unlock Specializations mod, I don't know if this could be the cause?

Do you have a file that begins with "exptable" in any of your override folders? There are roughly one hundred thousand folders to check, though...

Yup I've got a mod that adds tactics slots based on recalculations, that mod contains an exptable.gda and exptable_tactics.xls. Are those causing the problem, and if I delete those, will I get my 3rd spec point upon leveling up?

Yes, that file is probably interfering. You can check the contents of exptable.gda with this small application.
If it does not have "3" in column SpecPoint at level 22, then you will not get a 3rd spec point. I don't know if deleting or updating that file will give you the 3rd spec point retroactively. The game usually does award imported characters above level 22 their 3rd spec point though, but that may be scripted.

There are a bunch of updated tactics slot mods for DA:A on the nexus, but I think they will also award a level 22 character in Origins a 3rd spec point. If you can live with that, no problem.

If you don't like that (getting a 3rd spec point in Origins), you could try something more sneaky*:

I'm assuming this is the mod you use currently. It's not compatible with Awakening. Move its exptabe.gda to "USERNAME\\Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age\\modules\\Single Player\\override\\" (Vista).

Download this (v_1_1). Navigate to your Dragon Age installation folder, navigate to "Dragon Age\\packages\\core_ep1\\. Make a new folder called "override". Put the mod's "exptable_gxa.gda" there. Ignore the other file.
Make sure you do not have an exptable file in any other location, except those two.

Now two exptable files with more tactics slots and the additional spec point for Awakening ONLY will happily coexist next to each other without interfering since they are both campaign specific and not game-wide.
I've been doing it that way and although it's kinda dirty (since you have to make yet another override folder) it seems to works flawlessly. My level >22 character got its 3rd spec point upon entering Awakening, and Origin's level cap stays at 25.

If the game does not give your character a spec point retroactively (check after next levelup), use this script. Extract into \\Dragon Age\\packages\\core\\override\\, run the game with the console enabled, bring up the console, type "runscript hst_givespec" without quotes.

* I seems to work just fine

Thank you very much for your detailed instructions and help!

For now, I've settled with using this mod for adding a spec point. I'll use your method for later playthroughs. Since DA:A Redesigned just got released I shall seek to finish DA:A first :wizard:

Once again, thanks for your help!

I just figured out how to receive your third specialization point retroactively without opening the console.
First, you do what Trylane wrote:

Trylane wrote...

Download this (v_1_1). Navigate to your Dragon Age installation folder, navigate to "Dragon Agepackagescore_ep1. Make a new folder called "override". Put the mod's "exptable_gxa.gda" there.
Then, open this exptable file with this small application.

Now, let's say your companion or MC who misses the third point is level 27. In the exptable file, now you write a "0" at lvl 22, and a "3" at lvl 28. The next time your companion or MC levels up, he will receive the missing specialization point.

This worked for me even with using Combat Tweaks and not changing anything with that mod, even though there is a exptable_ct.gda file in there as well.

Enjoy! :)
