I thought the first game did poorly? Why would they make a sequel to an unsuccesful game? I'm not trying to sound harsh, i've never played it so i can't make a personal judgement... but from what i've heard from friends and the tinternet apparantly it didn't do so good. Anyway, i wouldn't be too bothered... probably wouldn't get it but at least it'll make others happy.
You need to play it. Its one of the best games I ever played on Xbox and I think it actually did do pretty well. They have been talkin about a sequel sense about 2 years ago. I'm just hoping it might actually get one. Maybe with a little bit better creativity with your asian character. Like you can design your own traits or what not. Now you would still have to be asian. Just you could decided if you where dark skinned or light skinned and maybe modify the fact a little to match yours. hehe. This would be fun.

However, if I recall right, JE was the least succussful game BioWare did in the last decade, why should they do a sequel to that one? Jonp is likely right, it was no flop, but also no huge hit, either.

Ah ok, well i was just guestimating, from talking with friends (trying to convince myself to try it) and off other gaming forums so i can't take everything i hear for the truthJonp382 wrote...
JRCO I forget who said it now, but one of the BioWare folks said it did sell well. So I assume it at least turned a profit. Probably nothing like DA:O or ME though.
I still think it would be a bit of a waste when they could make a bigger profit from a better title (like you said, DA or ME) but thats just the EA-side of me talking.

Is there any real confirmation from a BioWare employee of Jade Empire's poor sales? At some point I began believing the omnipresent forum talk of Jade Empire being a flop. Yet I can't seem to find any proof of this claim on the interwebs. It makes me wonder if these claims are just a bit exaggerated.
I'm sure Jade Empire wasn't the runaway blockbuster KotOR or ME were, however. It's unlikely we will see a sequel or spin-off anytime soon. Even if the first game had lukewarm sales, that may not be enough for BioWare's high-ups to take a risk. EA has given them a great deal of freedom, but I doubt they're in any position to take serious gambles on a sequel to a game so many feel is a mediocre failure.

but I'd be shocked if a sequel was the announcement.

In short, that game has soul, which is an extremely rare thing these days.

I enjoyed Jade Empire a lot while I was playing it, but in retrospect it didn't leave as big an impression as most other BioWare games have for me, and I don't think it has aged that well either, despite it being not all that old. I know that I definitely feel this way, because I felt compelled to start playing it again just two days ago. I'm still enjoying it, but finding the pacing to be a bit odd and the clumsy combat difficult to overlook. (By contrast, I can still replay KOTOR or BG2 and enjoy them as much as I ever did.)
Even still, I think I would prefer seeing another Jade Empire game at this point over an entirely new game or series from BioWare (outside of ME and DA, of course). There is a ton of potential there. One of my main problems with Jade Empire is that I feel it has the weakest gameplay of any BioWare game I've played. I liked the story, and the combat wasn't great but it was solid enough to keep me interested, but the gameplay outside of dialogue and combat had little to recommend it. Between fights and dialogues I basically felt like I was just running from one fight or dialogue to the next.
To be fair, stripped of their combat, other BioWare games probably wouldn't fare too well either, but my point is that in most other BioWare games, I think that the combat and non-combat segments of the gameplay are better integrated. In Jade Empire, when you encounter enemies, the whole feel of the controls and movement changes and it reminds me a bit of RPGs with random encounters, in that you switch from one gameplay style to another, with little in the way of transition. I think that Mass Effect transitions more seamlessly from the shooting to the non-shooting gameplay.
Additionally, other BioWare games tend to have some sort of skill system, equipment management, looting, sometimes lockpicking and traps, tactics customization, and other things to keep us occupied when we're not talking to people or killing them. I think this is why I never felt like I was just running to the next fight or story segment in DA or even ME. In my view, this is what would need to be worked on the most to make Jade Empire 2 a great game. Some ideas:
-Add some platforming elements (but only if BioWare can do it well). I'm not saying make the game into Super Mario 64, but considering the setting and the combat, I think that some minor elements of Prince of Persia, Assassin's Creed, or even Tomb Raider-style platforming gameplay and acrobatics would be appropriate, and could go a long way to making the whole game feel more fun and involving. In the original game, you can roll while running around the different environments, but it does absolutely nothing. In cutscenes, we see characters leap twenty feet into the air, but never get to do this sort of thing ourselves. I envision minor platform jumping gameplay throughout most of the game, with maybe a few big set pieces-- something like a Jade Empire equivalent to chasing an opponent over rooftops or treetops. (Another bonus to this sort of approach to gameplay is that it would necessitate more complex and interesting level design.)
-Improve the combat. This is obvious, but I think that well-implemented platforming gameplay could help smooth out the transition between exploring and combat. Example: running up walls and jumping off of them as a combat maneuver but also as a method of reaching higher locations outside of combat.
-Let us equip stuff! Even if it's just some boots and robes and things, even if it's just handled like the armor customization in ME2. I wanted to be able to customize my character's appearance in the original game, and this would add some gameplay functionality as well, in addition to opening up new opportunities for loot or merchants (which were limited almost to the point of uselessness in Jade Empire).
-Bring back the Dragonfly minigame, but make it into Star Fox-style on-rails shooter-- again, only if BioWare can do this well. (One character in Jade Empire mentions nobility racing their mechanical flyers, which could be a fun diversion as well.)
-Give the RPG game mechanics a little boost. I know that a lot of people feel like ME2 dispensed with the RPG stuff too much, but I like how it handles character progression and upgrades more than Jade Empire. Three base attributes is not much, and they only affected your health, chi, and focus meters and your conversation skills. The amulet wasn't a bad idea, but there's only so much to do with the gems, when we only have three core attributes. Equipment would help a bit, but so would implementing some kind of skill system or at least giving us something to spend points on besides styles.
Eh, I have other ideas too, but you get the idea. As I said, I don't really expect to see a sequel at this point, but if it ever happens, I would play it.

BioWare have TOR, Dragon Age and Mass Effect; All current IPs that have upcoming products. Can they really stretch to a fourth? TOR will, likely, use a huge amount of resources for at least another few years.
I think it'll be linked to DA and ME, truth be told.

I really liked Jade Empire. It always seemed strange to me that it did so poorly. The story was very compelling and it had the kinds of twists that I've come to expect from bioware games. I'd definetly buy a sequel of similar quality.
Bioware would do great with a sequel because now they are big enough to get better Ads for it. I mean just look at the AD coverage for ME 2. Its one of the reasons people went out and bought the dang game. I think if they did it right and really though about improving the combat system. Making some of the characters more meaningful. Plus making the story longer. I think it would be an awesome game. I mean the world itself was brighten at the time.
