I reckon its a good idea (planet scanning that is). this new version of galatic exploration made me want to take planetary astronomy at uni (just for lulz of course:lol:)
In addition to the largely varied planets you can find (not just the cookie cutter models from ME1) you only have to scan the equator and 'one' latitude above and below the equator (i mean put your scanner one scanner width away from the equator) of every few planets to have all the resources you need. you dont need to scan the **** out of every planet you find
Seriously, planet scanning was designed as something to be done sparingly throughout your playthrough. If you're spending more then 2-3 minutes per planet, or if you're depleting every planet you encounter, then you're doing something wrong.
The amount of resources required to get all of the upgrades is a small fraction of the available resources among all planets in the game. Hell, I spent less than 2 hours (out of ~45 hour playthrough) depleting appx 20-30 planets (at 2-4 minutes per planet) and I had hundreds of thousands more resources than I needed.
The mechanic isn't as bad as people make it out to be. It isn't riveting, and there is a lot of room for added dynamics that could make it much more engaging. However, it's not a large time-sink, and it's a calm activity to do in between misssions (for short intervals).
