Any suggestions for solving this game stopper, cause I know you've all gotten past this "Rescue Queen Anora" problem with the mighty Ser Cauthrien - and yes, I am a newbie. Thanks for any replies. -El Halcon

Your tactics will vary depending on who you have in your squad, what your talents/powers/spells are, and if you use strategy or not.
Oh yeah, and this belongs in Spoilers section rather than here.

My level 15 crew is stuck! I've hacked and fought my way through this game until the Arl of Denerim's Estate. Arl Howe and his gang were easy prey, but this Ser Cauthrien is far worse than any demon ever encountered. Many times I've fought and lost by running my crew all the way back to the dungeons - where only Ser Cauthrien follows. But, she quickly whacks my crew dead with her mightty sword. I've only been able to reduce her tremendous life line by about half before all perish. I've even resorted to using the game's God mode, but that cheat does not work in this paticular instance. I've been stalled from progressing this game for weeks, and my opinion has soured on Dragon's Age Origins. My main gripe is that there are insufficient side quests to beef up you crew to face these mighty characters and demons - without resorting to cheats that don't seem to work anyway.

I am trying to get the achievement 'Heavy Hitter'. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions with weapons, armor or skills? So far I have only gotten 95 hit points I think. That is way below 250 what am I doing wrong?
Manaclash...and what does this have to do with the OP?

you can win this fight, but you are not meant to.

and my mage was lvl 20 or so by that fight. there's plenty of sidequests, and even I had to redo that fight a few times. it is winnable, don't worry, but it's a pain.

since this is the no spoilers area, i'll try to keep out spoilers. my suggestion is bring a healer in your party, either wynne if you have her or morrigan if you gave her the ability. set a tactic to cast group heal if anyone goes under 75% health. keep an eye on it to see if the tactic is hitting fast enough. the battle is winnable. if you're struggling, keep your dps character using all possible skills to add damage. i would think you have a mage high enough to use the cone of cold spell. use this as often as possible and take advantage of the freeze to keep hitting with your dps and heal up with your mage. coc has a short cooldown, so use it as soon as it comes back.El Halcon1 wrote...

What? What do you mean when you say, "You don't have to win this fight?" If you Stand Down, you end up in prison! Are you supposed to end up in prison? -El Halcon

dunno if this is spoilerish enough, but this losing this fight doesn't game over your rear, and you can reclaim your gear and escape perfectly well.

The game is designed so that you cannot win the battle. The story arc assumes you lose the battle (or surrender) and thus the next sequence will begin. I've never even come close to defeating Cauthrien and her guards.
You can beat Cauthrien. I usually just "pull" her into a room and shut the door.

I was wondering how the hell she managed to inflict so much damage on me as well until I realized "oh, I guess she's supposed to kick my sorry ass".

Actually, it's designed either way. The dialogue all makes sense if you beat Ser Cauthrien and go straight back to the estate.Volleyjeff wrote...

Having said that, the player is clearly meant to either surrender or lose to Ser Cauthrien, because she's one of the hardest bosses in the game, harder than the Archdemon or even possibly Gaxkang the Unbound. Also, the fact that the Escape! quest is one of the funniest sequences in the game, and it'd be a shame to miss out on it on your first playthrough.
I recommend either Sten/Dog, or Zevran/Oghren. Both of those combinations can make it all the way through.

I've not acquired a walkthrough, so nearly everything blind sides me. This is quite an advancement from Baldur's Gate, but that was soooo loooong ago! Thanks for the input. -El Halcon

I beat her on my first playthrough and never realised there was a branch of the storyline that was different if you surrendered/lost the fight so I beat her on my next 3 playthroughs too. It's one of my favourite fights of the game - on normal setting anyway (not so sure I'd like it on nightmare!)
This fight requires a lot of tactics and regular pausing to re-evaluate the party's moves. It *is* winnable at level 15 if you have a mage with good crowd control spells. She is a really tough boss and takes some time to beat so its really important to minimise the damage from the other NPC's as much as possible so your whole party can focus on her.
