I actually beat her on hard on my second try. The first try I didn't know I was running into the trap, and my arcane warrior didn't have any shields enabled, so she critical hit me for like a crazy amount of damage (killed me in one hit).

I didn't take her to a different room, though. I just had Morrigan put up sleep, waking nightmare, blizzard, lighting storm, and death cloud, which took a pretty good amount of mana consumption, but kept those nasty archers at bay.

Although overcoming the scatter shots from the archers was difficult, I was proud that my whole team made it through alive lol.

This was the only big battle that my whole team survived, and I wasn't even expecting them to. I would suggest you use frequent AoE bombs on those pesky archers, and keep Cauthrien focused on your tank/arcane warrior.

I beat her on my first playthrough and never realised there was a branch of the storyline that was different if you surrendered/lost the fight so I beat her on my next 3 playthroughs too. It's one of my favourite fights of the game - on normal setting anyway (not so sure I'd like it on nightmare!)

This fight requires a lot of tactics and regular pausing to re-evaluate the party's moves. It *is* winnable at level 15 if you have a mage with good crowd control spells. She is a really tough boss and takes some time to beat so its really important to minimise the damage from the other NPC's as much as possible so your whole party can focus on her.

Same, on my first play through I didn't realize giving up was a legitamate option.  She isn't that hard, you just can't mindlessly hack and slash your way through it like you can the rest of the game.  Every boss fight should be like that  imo.

I've heard reports of Mana Clash hitting certain high level magic-users for over 3000 damage.

The way i killed her was;first run to the back of any room room you passed and then let two of your teammates get killed then take the team mate that's alive in the back of any room with your main character and then Ser Cauthrien will follow you with two of her guards kill the guards and kill cauthrien. If i were you i would bring Morrigan,Wynne, and dog.

With Cauthrian, I immediately run back to the small room down and to the left of the entrance hall. Usually the party will get stunned by a Scattershot just as you round the corner, but that still gives you enough breathing space. That normally leaves Cauthrian and a few guards to deal with. Since she has a 2H, Misdirection Hex works well on her, failing that you can always kite her around the room with whoever has aggro and burn her down with staff and arrow fire.

Oh, and I got Heavy Hitter with a Chasind Great Maul using Final Blow, though I suspect Death Hex/ Death Cloud will also do it fairly easily.

I actually got the heavy hitter achievement with my mage. I had spell might on and dropped a mana clash on the blood mage leader in the Denerim warehouse, and it did insane damage.

I have also seen massive amounts of damage done with various spell combos, like Storm of the Century and Entropic death.

Actually, it's designed either way. The dialogue all makes sense if you beat Ser Cauthrien and go straight back to the estate.

Having said that, the player is clearly meant to either surrender or lose to Ser Cauthrien, because she's one of the hardest bosses in the game, harder than the Archdemon or even possibly Gaxkang the Unbound. Also, the fact that the Escape! quest is one of the funniest sequences in the game, and it'd be a shame to miss out on it on your first playthrough.

I recommend either Sten/Dog, or Zevran/Oghren. Both of those combinations can make it all the way through.

LOL Zevran/Dog is hilarious too!  Esp if you let Dog handle it.

I actually got that by having my archer hit a random foe with an arrow of slaying. 360 points of damage and one dead ogre.

True, Dog is pretty funny no matter who he's paired with. I just advocate Sten/Dog because it's the only way Sten is actually effective at bluffing. They compliment each other in terms of bluffing ability, as Sten is able to bluff past the only one Dog cannot, and Dog's very presence allows Sten to bluff through the first hurdle, when with anyone else he fails miserably and decides to go on a rampage.

You know you can actually seduce the guard as a guy as well? My first character tried it and I was extremely surprised he succeeded.

Yes, this is a fight you can lose, unlike the others. Most people wait until later in the game to fight Ser Cautherine, or don't fight her at all. It seems odd that your only at level 15 at that point. I think you must have missed a number of the side quests, or blasted through some of the areas without exploring them fully. You seem to have missed rather a lot of fighting.

I beat Cauthrein at level 14 on hard with Wynne, Leliana, Alistair and my highly armored, high constitution PC (tank). I used about 10 health poultices, and 15 lyrium potions.

And then when I realized what I missed, I reloaded and surrendered.

It's MUCH more fun to surrender & go to prison. (I recommend sending Zevran & Oghren - and Oghren gives 7 approval for it, too) The easiest way out is for you & Alistair to bluff your way out, but I'd hate to miss The Brothers. You get to kill Cauthrien later, don't worryl.

I just let my antagonist captured each time. The babe's basicly set so you can't win.Sure you can exploit the poor Ai and escape the archer and lock cautrian in 1 room.. Or prepare yourself like a maniac before the fight and spam poultice and lyrium potion than brag on the forum like you accomplished something . But you're supposed to be quite alone actually or with Allistair vs 15 well trained archer and a pissed Knight with a mighty sword..It's make no sense to win this figh(canon wise)

I never surrender but i let her capture me.I like her has a character and in many playthrough i did not kill her at all(You can persuade her to not attack you the second time you meet)

You are supposed to lose the fight. But due to poor design of the encounter (and partially due to poor enemy group AI): The door doesn't lock behind you, cutting off your escape. And the group doesn't aggro as a unit but one at a time.

I only surrendered once and to be able to make the videos for the Prison Break with several party combos. It's not that hard to kill them all in NM. The more you play, the easier it gets. I'll upload that battle for the sake of it.

If you defeat her and then surrender, you'll get two Summer Swords and in the second fight she's really a wuss. So weak compared to the first!

In time: You are NOT supposed to lose the fight IF you want the Kind of Big Deal achievement (zero injuries) WHILE not losing Sten's approval if you have him with you! - If you fight and lose you get the injury score. If you surrender, Sten disapproves.
