It's not really blck and white.
- Leliana: An Orlesian spy/assassin. Morally the same level as Zevran.
- Oghren: A drunkard who has killed a defenceless opponent in the Proving, and still thinks that the fights in the Proving should be lethal.
- Sten: A massive qunari who has murdered an entire household including children. Sentenced to death for his crimes, and yet you free him?
- Morrigan: While most of her killing in the past was defence against templars, she does have a slightly "different" view on how to deal with people. In general, Morrigan regards all human life save her own as worthless and expendable. If someone isn't able to defend himself, he deserves to die. If someone shows compassion, it's lack of intelligence for her. Not quite the person you'd like to hang around with as a goody-two-shoes.
- Shale: Extremely bitter and doesn't show any sign of respect for organic life at all. Is known to have killed already, and from her words is likely to do so again.
The NPCs' backstories do not leave much leeway. They're all criminals, except for Alistair, Wynne and Dog (who loves you no matter what you do). From what I read, the only difference you make is not that Zevran is an assassin, but that he has tried to kill you. All of your companions have had their experience in killing people for money, or out of sheer bloodrage.
Sten: A massive qun'ari who murdered an entire several people in a fit of rage when learning that his reason for living had been stripped away from him in the battlefield. He was repentive, and full of regret.
I asked him to join to repent for his crimes, and he never betrayed my trust even at 0 approval.
His one time incident happened in affection, and he was prepared to die for his crimes, did not resist when the templars came to bring him in when he had calmed down, and he would have died had not my party freed him with the Revered Mother's blessing.
-Morrigan: More or less the same past as Zevran: Raised to be a psychopath by powers greater than herself. I do not trust her either.
-Shale: After being a mage's personal slave for a decade, she may or may not have killed her slave-master.
She refers to other living creatures as squishy, based on her experience as a 10 ton golem.
Her master effing chiseled away most of her body so that she would fit through the effing doors because his freaking wife didn't want Shale indoors..!
... I believe that shale's past is a Edward Scissorhands moment: She did it, but not because she wanted to -- only because she became free-willed too fast to be able to control herself.
In any case, she was a slave, and her master's death eventually led to her freedom.
-Oghren: Drunk, he challenged another warrior to a fight to first blood. He was punished according to Orzammar law, and suffered the entire punishment.
Boys with sharp toys should not play when drunk, and even dwarves -- or perhaps, especially dwarves -- should know that you don't put overly drunk dwarves in a fighting ring when only one is drunk and truly hates the other.
(Dwarves have a knack for honor, if you recall -- and this person supposedly challenged his Oghren's honor.)
Leliana: A repenting orlesian BARD who
was primarily a spy, possibly killing most of her kills after being
exposed and fleeing -- we have little reason to expect her to have done
a whole lot of pure assassinating.
She QUIT
as she realized her employer planned grand treason, but didn't manage
to turn her employer in, was double crossed and left imprisoned as the
traitor.
Then she escaped, and never assassinated, commited treason, nor spied ever again.
She voluntairs for your party, after helping you, in an honest desire to do good for the world to wash away her past.
She stays by your side till the end, no matter her approval.
In combat, she shouts "I never liked this part".
She is afraid that she might be evil.
She admits she enjoys the "thrill of the hunt", but it is never specified if she has assassinated anyone, as opposed to having fought people to the death.
In any case, she regrets ever having fallen under Marjolaine's influence and has broken free without your influence, and when confronted by her previous mistress, she will turn down her offers no matter her approval with you.
Zevran: A suicidal antivan assassin who was primarily an assassin, possibly killing a lot of women and children in his way to his marks. He went on a mission to kill all grey wardens after realizing that his girlfriend, whom he enjoyed killing with his comrade, in fact wasn't going to save the life of their next victim marked for assassination like they believed she would. She was in fact going to assist them in murdering their next target, and the thought of his beloved actually not protecting someone from assassination, and himself mocking her when she proclaimed her love for him and pleading for her life while he laughed at her face while they killed her slowly troubled him somewhat, but not more than him constantly wanting the company of prostitutes and other women.
After potentially killing some other grey wardens, he encounter the party, and upon being crushed, he asks you to spare his life and take him with you.
He will suggest that he may be an assassin working for the king, if you crown Alistair.
In combat, he shouts "I love this part".
Zevran admits he enjoys taking lives, especially the moment when the victim's life is completely in his hands.
He will betray you unless you butter him up, once his comrade shows up, if your improval with him is less than 26.
...
For me Zevran is the opposite of Leliana:
Zevran was the group leader,
Leliana tagged along with Marjolaine.
Zevran's only regret is killing his lover and accomplice, not murdering people and causing collateral damage
Leliana's only regret is killing people, not leaving her lover and accomplice
She regrets what she did to others.
He regret what he did to his own.
Leliana leaves but is betrayed by her lover, but escapes her life to start a new far away from her lover.
Zevran betrays his lover, and goes on another assassination mission to die after learning that he couldn't justify the murder of his lover.
She is betrayed by her lover, and starts a new life.
He betrays his lover, and wants to end his life.
Leliana helps you first, then ask to join you.
Zevran tries to kill you first, then ask to join you.
She saves your life.
He tries to your life.
Leliana won't betray you if you don't butter her up.
Zevran may betray you unless you butter him up.
She will not betray you for anything in the world.
He will betray you unless you give him what he wants.
