Suggest a class for me?

Having grabbed Mass Effect a week ago from Steam and just finished it today... I'm now downloading Mass Effect 2.
I played an engineer through Mass Effect, and completed everything bar a resource collection mission. Very much an enjoyable game although when the high level gear kicked in around 36+ it got a little too easy.
Typically when playing roleplaying games you need to have a thief/engineer/techinical type character in order to pick locks etc, and Mass Effect was no different - although I don't honestly know if companions could have been used for this. I did feel that I would have enjoyed being a soldier more in Mass Effect, I found that I was on the periphery of things in combat - I could kill stuff but mainly I was chasing stuff out of cover and watching my comrades do most of the damage... even if they did do some stupid things sometimes. I found my engineer special attacks weren't especially useful, straight combat seemed to do the trick most of the time, I'd only use them if my weapon was overloaded.
For Mass Effect 2 I'd like to pick a class that does a bit more damage, but importantly I'd like to be able to do everything in game, rather than play the game and see lots of stuff that I can't hack/open/explore etc.
I've tried to avoid spoilers of what's to come in Mass Effect 2, so I don't really know if there are classes that can and can't do stuff, or if the team I can recruit can cover all the gaps my class leaves.
If I pick a soldier as a main character, can I have henchmen that can sort out locks and hacking etc?

Personally, the Vanguard was the most fun.

But you did answer the question - I don't need to pick any specific class in order to be able to do stuff.
I think I'll go make a nice big mug of tea and read up on all the classes... hopefully one will jump right out at me.
Thanks!
EDIT : I've just realised an ommission. In Mass Effect as an Engineer I could not use the sniper rifle. There were many times when I wished I could, and it felt a little bit cheesy sniping using the Mako. From a distance I could wipe pretty much anything out by sniping with very little risk to myself. The exceptions were turrets with a sheath that protected them in one place (no point in a spoiler) and threshers.
As long as sniping is a viable option in Mass Effect 2 then i suspect I'll be picking a class that can snipe!

Oh, just to warn you... Most of the advice in this forum is geared towards Insanity difficulty.

one point later in the game you can get sniper/AR/shotgun training...Halkus wrote...
Sadly my internet connection is fully consumed with downloading Mass Effect 2 or I'd go do just that.

Adept and Engineer takes on an entirely different approach to the other classes. Both Singularity and Combat Drone are excellent crowd control and can make up for the lack of weapon power in those two classes. If you found yourself relying more on your tech abilities to bring an enemy down in the first game, then either of these classes could work.
Vanguard and Sentinel can both be brutal for close quarters combat: Vanguard due to Charge and Sentinel due to Tech Armor. Sentinel gives you access to Warp and Overload, which are both crucial powers for taking down an enemy's defenses. Vanguard has Cryo Ammo, which compliments Charge nicely, and Pull, which is a terrific power when used in conjunction with a squadmate's power such as Warp or Concussive Shot.
That leaves Soldier. You'll have access to sniper rifles. Adrenaline Rush is a good method to line up your shot with any weapon, versus the Infiltrator's ability to only slow down with a sniper rifle. You also get Concussive Shot to work with your squadmates or to take down barriers. You'll have access to disruptor, cryo, and incendiary ammo, which gives you options just in case you're not as in love with cryo ammo as I am. There isn't any ability to help you get out of a tough spot other than your own raw power, though.
So that's my rundown of what makes each class different from the other anyway.
ETA: Oh right, and as you gain each squadmate's loyalty, you'll have the ability to train yourself in their loyalty power. However, you only can have one loyalty power in use at any time, though you'll get the ability to unlearn one power so you can learn another. Reave seems to be the crowd favorite, as it damages your enemy while healing yourself.

I found my engineer special attacks weren't especially useful, straight combat seemed to do the trick most of the time, I'd only use them if my weapon was overloaded.
Powers in ME1 were far more useful than they are in ME2. Engineer's ability to hack mechanics and overheat enemy weapons were very powerful, for example. If you didn't find them useful, it seems reasonable that you should have played a soldier in the first game and taken along an engineer (Alenko, Tali, Garrus... even Liara).
So do yourself a favor and play a solider in ME2. Unlike ME1, in ME2 you don't need "skills" like electronics and decryption to open locks/whatever. Especially given your interest in combat over powers, I think you'll enjoy the game much more with a solider.
