1.  After you install Awakening, the game disk becomes the Awakening disk

2.  The game is on a DVD, not a CD, technically.  Optical drives can collect lint on the internal mirrors that aim the laser beam, and need to be cleaned.

3.  If your mirrors are clean, and you are using the correct disk, more likely than anything else, the anti-copying tracks are confounding Windows and the particular DVD drive that you are using.  You can check for what is called a "firmware upgrade" that may help, or swap DVD drives around with a PC that has a different brand drive in it, or you can use the hard copy's registration number to obtain a digital copy of the game from the EA store.

Glad I found this thread! I was having the same problem as sofy until I figured out that after I had installed 'Awakenings' I now have to have the "Awakenings" disc in the drive and not the original "Origins" disc in to play. Go figure...

Thanks Jim_uk! That did the trick for me nicely just now. So odd that I'd need the Expansion disc in the drive to play a DLC for the core game...Ah well.

Analyst: Hi, my name is Analyst. How may I help you?
: Hello. I reinstalled my Dragon Age origins tonight and updated to 1.04, and now whenever I try to run it it gives me an error that states "Could not find the Dragon Age disk. Please insert the disk and try again",
: After the re-install it worked, but told me I needed to update to play some of the DLC that I bought.
Analyst: Okay.
: I am using the orginal disk on a windows 7 x64 machine
Analyst: Please allow me for a moment of your time.
: Okay.
Analyst: To further troubleshoot the issue we have to manual uninstall the game from the system and then reinstall the game and then patch the game . Here are the steps for it . Please follow all the steps carefully.

http://support.ea.co...ated=1258404659

Once you are unisntallation you have to reinstall the game and then patch the game . Latest patch can be found here

http://social.biowar...page/da-patches

After reinstallation and patching the game you can download the items .
: Being that is what I did (As I said before) and it worked before the re-patch, how will redoing it a second time help?
Analyst: Please try to follow the steps once again.
Analyst: And let's see it works or not.
: Or you could have told me what I just found on the forums. If you have installed Awakening, please use that disc.
You have disconnected.

I'll scan the thread and probably want to edit in something sarcastic if it's already in here (I'll resist the urge, of course).  There is a disk check routine that is very buggy, and isn't being patched / repaired. Personally, I believe that there must also be something else, perhaps some bad tracks to make copying more difficult.  Sometimes it prevents installation entirely, more often, it breaks the Disk Check function.  Apparently, not all DVD drives are compatible with whatever the disk check's routines (and anything else) are, and the only solution that EA will ever suggest is to give up on the hard copy, and download a digital copy instead.

Yup.

Same situation, most likely. Many DVD burners are incompatible with the EA disks. Most "plain" DVD drive (read, not write) seem to work fine. The easy answer is to obtain the digital download instead and play from that, which doesn't try making any disk check, unless it gets screwed up. You can also swap drives around if there are several PCs in the home, and someone there is handy with simple tools.

I wouldn't mind using the Awakening Disk, but half of my mods for origins are not Awakening compatible so it honestly sucks x.x I really don't want to have to uninstall awakening every time I play through the game, it's very irritating and time consuming :( Not to mention I don't know if I would be able to re-install it because of the number you need.

Does anyone have some sort of solution? Like an awakening mod compatibility patch or something along those lines?

Even if you're playing Origins, you have to use the Awakening disc if Awakening is installed. The game is merely checking to see if you own a valid disc... it does run any files off the drive after installation, as far as I know.

If you are having issues with the disk install you can use the CD key from the disc to get the digital download version of the game from EA using their digital download manager, Origins. Install and launch the Origins manager and log in using the same account you use here. On the top right of the Origins window just to the left of your email address there is a small gear icon. Click on that icon and select "Redeem Code". Type in the CD key from the disc (you can do this with any EA PC released since 2009). If you click on the "My Games" tab on the far left of the Origins window, there will be an icon in the lower window for the games for every CD key you have entered. At the bottom of each game icon is a button that says download. Download, install and play. You may wish to set the manager to store the install files (they will take up a fair amount of space, but you won't have to re-download if you need to reinstall for any reason). The Origins manager must remain installed on your computer, but does not need to be running to play the game.

Edited to add link to the EA download manager.

Just in case others are having the same issue, the fix I found was pretty simple - put the disc in FIRST, then click Autorun.exe. Weird fix, but it worked.
