Is there a way to resize a placeable object?  I'd like to take one of the statues and make it small enough to fit on a desk like a paperweight.

There's no way to resize a placeable or creature within the toolset. You'll have to use an external program to shrink the model down. I believe there are some tools which have been made by the community for this purpose.
