I don't know, but starting at maximum friendship is a bit odd, considering there is at least one gift.
What's the point of the gift then?
isn't the mabari too friendly?

dog never turns on you.
You need to remember that it has chosen you and there is spiritual bond between you.
Also, Marabi are intelligent, so they know who is their allies and enemies.

we get that much, it just makes zero sense to clutter the loot table with dog gifts in that dog approval is obsolete.

It is a role playing game... even though your dog loves you 100%, you still get gifts to give him, because you also love him.
I doesn't clutter the loot table to be able to find 6-7 dog bones to give to him.
Furthermore, if you really want to be an ass, you can give the dog bones to any other party member and even though they wont like the gift you still get the minimum 1 approval rating point that any gift gives.

Haha, if i knew, i would have given the ox bone to Morrigan. It would be funny if that's the tipping point that triggers her romance.

He's a dog. Dogs are like that. My folks ended up with an Australian Cattle Dog, who decided Dad was the alpha male of the pack. To say she worshiped the ground he walked on was a bit of an understatement.

Just give the dog gifts to other party members. You get a +1.

LOL yeah, might as well just get that +1 approval for the doggie gifts.
I really wish the other followers would react differently to gifts that are obviously unpleasant ect rather than the polite uncomfortable response they give..
Seriously if someone gave you a piece of "soggy cake" that had dog slobber all over it, would you really want to accept it? Or maybe dirty pantaloons or a slightly old meat bone that hasn't been kept in a refrigerator (meaning the meat on it would be going bad, and it would stink, ect)

This is a role-playing game: the point of a gift is to express affection.
You can also give gifts and compliment people who are already in love with you as well.

There's a reason "loyal as a dog" means the same thing as "blind loyalty."
And you know what? Sten actually got like +4 from the soggy cake.

Sten is as loyal to me as Rabbit. I only suspect it is a bug

Dogs are flawlessly loyal to their master... or they are nuts. It's instinct. It's like you are the alpha wolf to them.

And this is opposed to your companions, whom you need to bribe.

I dunno if it was a random only-this-one-thingy, but giving a bone to Loghain raised approval by 4.

Any gift to anyone will raise it by 5, next gift 4, then 3 and onwards. Unless you happen to give them a gift they really like, then you will get a higher bonus.

Ah. Then I litterally rofled for nothing. It was so perfect, Loghain going bat**** over a bone, rotten and mastermind-evil as he is.
