It's by looking at these boards that I now know that 'romances' are extremely popular in Mass Effect. This game is almost sims-like sometimes.

Bioware said something about it being a guided main character arc, so Shepard is straight, no matter what.
Where did you hear/read that? Do you have the link or something?

Thank god, a sane thread. M/M F/F romances would probably be a little late to implement in the series now, what with most characters sexuality established, Bioware said something about it being a guided main character arc, so Shepard is straight, no matter what.
I saw the article myself. It was posted on these forums somewhere.

Yeah, a lot of people have drawn that comparison, either out of irritation - "This is not a sim!" - or the way you did.
But I've never seen it that way. People like Bioware romances because these are actual, individual characters with personalities and strengths and weaknesses that you're getting to know, whose romances build and progress over the course of an epic story. These characters are compelling and real.
Sims are okay, but they don't have that level of depth. In fact, I've rarely seen that level of depth anywhere outisde Bioware games.

You can rp a gay male Shepard but you'll just be lonely without one of these mods.

lol >.< I don't know about you, but I always thought Kaiden was kinda on the gay side. Too bad Bioware has decided male Sheps gay, him and Kaiden would have been cute.

Have you ever actually played a dating sim? I'm not gonna defend them as the pinnacle of gaming or anything, but the one thing they do well--in fact, their entire aim, really--is to portray compelling characters. If you want compelling characters, try giving Persona 3 or 4 a go; they're games with an RPG-style battle system combined with a daily dating-sim sort of aspect. Heck, in Persona 4 you can even be friends with a character of the opposite sex instead of being forced to date them, unlike Mass Effect.Nightwriter wrote...

I personally think that Kaidan and Ash were considered for possible same-gender LI's for at least a large part of the development, the evidence being the voice tracks. (Even though when I'm on the major Same Sex Romances thread in the non-spoiler section, someone always claims that that's only because Jen and Mark always did each other's lines... which doesn't quite explain Kim and Raphael having unique content on the disc.) Having said that... they probably wanted to simplify the romance system to not have to grade between the three to decide who shows at the conflict, or else do a three-way conflict. And it made things simpler, no doubt... but I don't know, I'd like the option to Paragonize Ashley and would do one runthrough with her as a LI just for that. (Okay, and she's not someone I'd kick out of bed for passing wind, either

They've never flat out said that Shepard is 'straight' using those words, though... and Kelly gives me pause on that even without attempting to analyze Casey Hudson's malaproping the word 'asexual' when he meant monogendered. (On Liara, naturally.) I think that if sexuality is canon, femShep is canon-bisexual. (OR a major tease with Kelly.)

FemShep has more freedom, because FemShep is non-canon herself.

Well, Liara, sort of counts, and I've not seen a femshep/Kelly romance, having not played a femshep, is that possible?
It's not exactly a romance; you don't get the achievement (on 360) for romancing her. You do take her out to dinner, she feeds your fish, and then after you do the suicide mission she can come up to your room and dance for you pretending your wall is a pole or something... *coughs* It is possible that she might actually become a real love interest in ME3 though.

Shepard went through the military training surrounded by sweaty muscle bound men, me thinks there could be a chance.
Or he could ignore it, like any straight guy would. You cannot be 'turned' gay/bi without the interest being there int he first place. If you aren't turned on by a guy, you aren't turned on by a guy, regardless of your gender.

Hehe. I was well aware of the consequences when I made the statement. Doesn't make it any less true, however.

Hehe, except this one is proven that Revan was male. Considering the descendant of him and Bastila is running around in TOR's timeline. XD

BioWare made Shepard male. I play both genders. I don't really know why you care that *your* Shepard isn't canon. Of *course* your Shepard isn't canon. Neither is any of the 9 I have currently.
