Where did they make Shepard male? Not in the comics. Not in the books. The ads? The only reason for Sheploo is the likeness rights contract. Legally, Bioware cannot advertise a Shepard who is not Sheploo. I personally think that Kaidan and Ash were considered for possible same-gender LI's for at least a large part of the development, the evidence being the voice tracks. (Even though when I'm on the major Same Sex Romances thread in the non-spoiler section, someone always claims that that's only because Jen and Mark always did each other's lines... which doesn't quite explain Kim and Raphael having unique content on the disc.) Having said that... they probably wanted to simplify the romance system to not have to grade between the three to decide who shows at the conflict, or else do a three-way conflict. And it made things simpler, no doubt... but I don't know, I'd like the option to Paragonize Ashley and would do one runthrough with her as a LI just for that. (Okay, and she's not someone I'd kick out of bed for passing wind, either. I just like Liara more, personally. And I'm not saying that because she's standing behind me with a coffee cup... really ...)
