I think it is.
Squad mate have infinite ammo with it and it forces them to go behind cover more often.
On the down side they don't fire as many shots, which means lots of misses.

There were posts on the incisor sniper rifle being better than the mantis. However, not everyone has the incisor; either way, the mantis is still a very strong choice.

I think the Viper is better for squadmates. I know I certainly can't make the Viper work for me. It's got a lower bonus against armour, but it has a minor bonus against shields and barriers that the Mantis doesn't. I've never thought about cover because my squadmates seem to have an entirely different take on when and where to take cover, so I stopped trying with them.

Except on Legion(Widow), or a Soldier Shepard, I think the Mantis is > Viper.

Widow> every other weapon in the game. Garrus uses the Mantis like a virtuoso

On insanity I noticed squadmates tend to be far more accurate, and I always equip them with the mantis. Cept for Legion who always goes in with the Widow.
The only problem with the mantis is low ammo, but squadmates have that infinitely anyway.

The Incisor is hands down the best, if you can get your hands on one for your squad mates.
They virtually NEVER miss with it. possibly because it fires 3-shot bursts and every shot does the same dmg as the Mantis, so accuracy is tripled. It doesn't work when Shepard himself uses it due to EXTREME ammo inefficiency, but works perfectly on squad mates. Thane and Zaeed, for instance, when maxed out on their respective passive skills can do almost as much dmg as Legion with the Widow.

After being an avid fan of the Mantis for squad mates for my first two Shepards, I've changed my mind and decided the Viper is better for them. Why? Because each hit, whether from Mantis or Viper, staggers enemies. Viper means more shots per minute, means more enemies staggered, means more CC. It's the damage vs cc debate: Mantis for damage, Viper for cc.

I always equip the Viper on squadmates. Reason being that, due to the slow rate of fire, the Mantis/Widow is only really better than the Viper if you are aiming for headshots. I have not noticed any AI pre-disposition in my several playthroughs for your squadmates to aim for headshots, so I would rather have them be able to "rapid-fire" their rifle onto an enemy.
My Shepard, however, always rolls with the Mantis or Widow.

I was under the impression that squadmates/npcs virtually always hit, with no accuracy problems regardless of weapon. Unlike in ME1, where weapon talents or ammos that affected accuracy were common, ME2 has no such thing.

with the mantis it seems they only will get head shots while with the viper they are less common

this doesnt make much sense... widow deals a crapload of damage ok no headshot but still more damage than few shots from the viper, considering that enemies get fast under cover and your squadmate anyway will not stay too much out of cover too if under fire i see no reason to not prefer the widow over the viper on legion
vs the mantis is closer, personally i still prefer the mantis as a safer and "frontload dmg" choice, but the viper can work well too.
also head shots happens quite frequently for what i saw (at least for legion) so no reason to not take advantage of the widow

I had the impression that the squadmates are aiming very well, so i equipped them with the Mantis. However if both squad members had sniper rifles one of them got the Incisor because it's better in mid-range combat (which i prefer). but as it uses ammo too quickly shepard always got the Viper.

The only squadmate that uses the Mantis with a degree of competence is Garrus. give everyone else the viper.

The incisor is the best for squaddies hands down. If you don't have it then I prefer giving them the viper than the mantis, spreading the love around rather than holding it for one guy every now and then is what I want my squaddies to do. Especially when they are squad cryo'd up, one hit one freeze on health, very handy.

Give them the Viper. Unless you're playing a class that totally sucks at dealing damage (or you suck at the game), you're going to be dealing more pain than your squad mates 99% of the time. Plus, your squad mates have a bad habit of shooting an enemy's cover, which can mean an endless loop of "shoot wall; reload when enemy pops out; repeat". With the Viper, they can hit the target multiple times without having to reload every shot.
