Ok, I admit I'm disappointed by the lack of letters. But I'm willing to give it a pass when you consider how MUCH there is to the first game to carry over. It would probably take a year just to get enough letters to get implemented to be satisfactory for all the choices you made in the first game.
Personally, I'm more concerned about rumors that you won't get to play your PC in the next DA game. I want everything to carry over and continue my romance with Zevran!
You can make a workaround for these things, such as keeping them vague. No matter what you chose with you romance at the endgame, having them go away somewhere is easy to implement. That letter could work with all endings, even if you decided to travel with your loved one (remember it said, "For a time"?) so I don't think that's a viable excuse from them imho.
Apart from ME2 (which barely counts), I've never seen (correct me if I am wrong) a game with continued romances. I have always dreamed of having my PC go through a normal relationship with their beloved in a sequel.
In the end, whatever choices you made, it is certain that all your Origins companions and you went off together (or at least most) so, I don't see how in another expansion, they couldn't have slight but rather simple variables. Such as how you handled the relationship, a mention of your background here and there, mentions of who is ruler... sure, they add VO cost, but in the end, it is worth it. Otherwise you end up with a bunch of people getting incredibly pissed off at the company for cutting costs.

So does non-king Ally actually even get screen time?
Nope, he's vanished. No screen time and nary a mention, or so I've heard.
This is from the Epilogue (Non-King)
If the Warden is not married to Alistair, but in a romance, she returns to her love and continues serving the Wardens with him at her side. Nothing more is heard from them after a few years, and some say they undertook a mission for the Wardens elsewhere, or just disappeared. Most assume however that their tale is far from complete.
That's the only mention of him.
Lame.
