I guess its all the promotional stuff but I really see the wardens as the heavy armored kick ass dudes from the promos. My little mage is going to feel tiny compared to all those guys. Did they do any promotional images for other Wardens who weren't warriors?

Duncan is a Rogue. And in the Calling there is a mage.

How far do you think a fighting force gets without medics or artillery?

whoops I edited the title.

Thanks :)

What I meant is it seems like there is a uniform for them that I've not seen a mage equivalent to.

Being a diehard mage myself, I've also noticed the distinct lack of mage stuff in most of the promos. I'm used to it though, it seems that the marketting department in a lot of games likes to play down "magic" maybe it's too geeky for them.

I don't think there is really any kind of uniform. They seem to kinda wear what they want.

At about 2:00 you see a Grey Warden Mage kicking some ass, then getting saved by a Rogue.

That's because the mages are in the back while the Grey Warden Warriors in matching armor are running at the enemy.

Yeah, poor Mage stereotypes. And you know, the guys in that quick look video posted somewhere here where right. Mage cloth robes do often look like dresses. Doesn't help them stand out against guys in heavy armor with huge swords or rogues decked out with wicked-looking dual weapons or elegant bows.

Just for that, I'm gonna make a bad-ass Mage who takes no prisoners.

Neither Had I awesome.

On topic its one of those things that like made me hesitant to play a mage... I love being the mage type but it seems that im just a dress/robe wearing dude. I want some neat "mage" armor even if its light. I mean look at morgain she has leggins even that would be kinda neat.

Well with the world builder maybe someone can make us mage armor. I wish I had the time and talent to create new items both models and textures..but I'll have to wait for others.

In The Calling, the Grey Warden mage was wearing chain mail.  And I seem to recall having seen mages wearing armor heavier than robes on some of the uploaded characters, which suggests that mages aren't limited, or as limited, in their armour selection as say, D&D.

Well Mac we have been told that you can wear anything you want as long as you meet the strength requirement... however it gives you a penalty to your spell casting.

however more and more people are refrencing the Calling ... I may have to read it.

Well you can still have your mage wear heavy armor and use heavy weapons.

Even though it'll mean retooling your character around, it is important to note that wearing armor doesn't actually restrict your magic like it does in a few other games. The only detriment is you'll have to focus a few levels into increasing your strength. You can't do this forever obviously (because you'd gimp your mage), so you'd always be behind the curve when it came to quality armor, but it would allow you to wear something besides robes. So you could at least have that visual of your mage wearing armor instead of a dress.

There is a mage specialization (arcane warrior) that lets your PC use his magic stat instead of strength for armor and weapon requirements, i think. I don't think it affects the mana and spell cost penalties for wearing armor though.

Still, just go that route if you want to do an armoured mage.

Wearing armor has a fatigue % so it will increase the cost of your spells.

Nevertheless, a majority of the rogues in the Grey Wardens appear to be the plate armoured, melee killing machines that are nearly inseperable from warriors.

Lore-wise, perhaps the lack of Grey Warden mages simply exists due to the scarcity of mages and a majority of them being purely aligned with the Circle of Magi. Still, it would be nice to see a troupe of Grey Warden mages raining a firey death upon the Darkspawn.

My guess is that to some, mages are less "interesting" to show off (and in my case, play) because while they may be powerful, they don't appear very -- hmm, what's the best word. Heroic? Basically, you've got a skinny gal/guy shooting fire from their hands to fry the baddies from afar. Compared to those who throw themselves into melee, there's just no visible skill, courage, risk or effort involved in that. A good melee gets the blood pounding. "Even" archery takes skill and physical effort. Most folks can relate to that to a degree ... but while there's surely a sort of skill and effort involved in magic too, it's harder for us to relate to that, and it's less viscerally satisfying to show off because there's no direct contact with the enemy, no skill-versus-skill contest of survival.

Still, while mages are damned rare and mages not affiliated with the Circle are even rarer, they're probably essential nevertheless -- and not just for their healing spells. ;)

From the way they're portrayed in the Calling, mages are indeed able to wear some varieties of armor (finely meshed chain mail shirts come to mind), and there are both rogue and 'ranger' sorts as well. There's no real uniform per se, but there's a gray tabard marked with a gryphon reared up that was fairly standard. I think part of the issue is that, as an organization in lore and fiction, they're not limited by game mechanics. All of them get at least some training in melee combat and armor, regardless of magical aptitude. As a character class we tend to be a stereotyped version of a specific role. Entirely understandable, but yeah.

Also, videos being videos, folks like to see things get stabbitied more than they like to see a magic missile attacking the darkness, Bioware knows this too, so as far as the trailers and whatnot, I doubt they're a perfectly accurate portrayl of Warden population ratios. ^_~

I wouldn't mind seeing a CGI version of that 'walking time-bomb' sort of skill mages can choose to get. That would be pretty awesome.
