Hello,

I bough ME1 on steam since I wanted to play ME2, but with my friends telling me that the story line is good I prefered to start with the first one to get all the story (and the saves).

Now I have a problem..... I can't save.... or to be more precise, I can save but the game only creates a "profile" files and no real "save" files (the ones with the character name)... which means I can't load.
I've tried many things, searched on forums (including this one), but with ME2 out it is really difficult to find any solution to my problem (since most of the post out there are for ME2).
So as I say I've tried many things, including: Deleting the "mass effect" folder in My Documents, downloading the latest patch for ME1 (yes... steam is meant to do this but it didn't...) and of course re-instaling the game.

By the way the game is on D: and My Documents is unmoved on C:

So now if anyone could help me I'd be really gratefull....

Can you tell me your operating system? Is it XP or Vista/7?

I assume you've tried quicksave as well as a "proper" save. Is there no error when this occurs? How big is the .MassEffectProfile file?

Have you tried a search for "*.MassEffectSave" on both drives to make sure it is not putting them somewhere silly?

If you are running Vista/7, have you tried "running as Administrator"? (Navigate to D:\\Games\\Mass Effect\\Binaries and then right-click on MassEffect.exe and Run as Admin).

thanks for your help eshrafel and sorry for not answering any earlier

I'm running under XP

I've tried the quicksave as well as "normal" one, both don't work. the MassEffectProfile file is 21Ko big and I think it gets bigger if I save many times (or maybe if I create many profiles with one save each.... can't remember)

and I just tried a search for the save files, nothing found....

Does specifically deleting the .MassEffectProfile file help?

Have you tried creating a new user account on xp, installing it and running it under there? Strange problem, I'm at a loss really.

no deleting it wont change anything.....

meh, I'll try that thing about the user account, but since I'm on the only account on my pc and of course it is the Admin one... I don't think anything will change

thanks anyway

Might seem like a silly question but have you tried e-mailing steam with this problem? I'm on xbox so can't really help with the mass effect problem but I've never had this on any of my pc games either. My only other suggestion would be have you tried downloading the game again from steam as it sounds like some files might be missing since its not creating a save file when you save. Another thing are you using dual monitors cos you could have the My doc folder open on one and mass effect running on the other and see if it does create a save file at all when you save.

well, I didn't try to contact steam since from what I have read most steam users having issues with the game itself didn't get any real help from them...

I re-downloaded the game when I uninstalled it (yeah, in order to re-install you have to re-download the whole stuff....). I have dual monitors on my pc and tried what you suggested but I can only see a new file beeing created which is the "profile" file.

thanks for your suggestions

Had a look around and found something interesting. Have you checked to see if the save folder is read-only (altho I doubt it is cos of it saving the profile) apparently Mass Effect seems tohave a history of creating read-only dir.

well, yes the save folder, as well as the whole mass effect folder and the dragon age folder are read-only... but I don't have troubles with dragon age and I tried to save without the read-only thing and it wont change anything... is there anything else I should to?

in fact, I just realized that even if I modify the file and change it into a not read-only file it will have changed again into read-only as soon as I check the properties again -_-".

I've got some news here.
I just downloaded and installed an illegual copy of ME (I know it's illegual, but I already have the real one I BOUGHT for 15$ and which is not working, right?).
the good news for steam is that the new (illegual) copy has exactly the same problem as the one I first bought (save problem).
So what I think is that the problem may be from my system... but I really don't have a clue about this......

any help would be apreciated ^^"

ok, just solved the whole thing by myself.

So as I thought earlier the problem was indeed from my system, not from steam or the game itself.

the problem was that there were 2 different "administrator" files under "Documents and Settings" and so 2 different "my documents"..... I don't know why it was in such a mess, I never moved any of those folders....

so what I did is that I moved the "official" "my doc" to a new directory and putted the content of both files into the new one.

thanks to Kryton44 and eshrafel for their time

Hi

I also have the save problem, but I can only find a "My Documents" and "Public Documents" (I run Windows 7) but I only find my Mass Effect 1,2,3 saves in "My Documents". Mass Effect 1 is the only ME game that has this problem. But one thing I discovered is, when I play the game up until the part where I get control over the ship, I can save and load all of my saves. But if I play further, the game deletes all my saves. I have checked, there is none of my old saves in the folder. Please help!
