A Theory of Dragon Age Origins, Origins. The fade itself is not actually a world unto itself but
merely a space between other worlds and realities. It in  itself is agnostic—without form or substance.
Its contents are fluid and formed from the dreams and desires of beings living
in proximity. Thus it was human aspirations and desires that gave rise to these
demons and spirits of void who in turn further molded the fade toward their own
purposes. Magic itself is created from thoughts and ideas given substance
within the fade them brought forth into this world by a skilled mage.

Pride demons are noted to be the most powerful of
demon-kind, but to leave the fade even these beings require a host. Being
"pride" demon's they would of course choose the most impressive of
hosts, this being the adult female dragon.  It is this form they  took when they first left the fade. Pride
demons are of course powerful magical being and among those talents are shape-shifting.
They quickly found they could achieve even greater power and authority in human
form.  Since they inhabited female dragons
their human forms were also female, and these
powerful female wizards were the first mage ruler’s of the Tevinter
Imperium. Over the generations they also bore many offspring and these
descendents, to various degrees, inherited their ancestor’s magical abilities.  These blood lines are primarily responsible
for all existing human and elf mages (the dragon lords found the “runty”
dwarves generally unsuitable mates, hence the lack of mages in this species).
Like the pride demon who inhabited the Baroness, these dragon lords were not
content to grow old and die. They, however, found a different method to achieve
longevity. When one host died they would posses one of their descendents
(generally female, although there were some male hosts taken over the centuries
if for no other reason than curiosity). With all their time spent in human form,
their personalities  also became increasingly human--though with
pride remaining a dominant trait (and this perhaps remains true to some degree
with mages in general?). Among their number included both Flemeth and Andraste.

Over the centuries the dragon lords became increasingly
bored with their dominion over this world and began exploring deep within the
fade for other worlds to conquer.  They
did in fact find another world but masters of this dark place were not so
easily subjugated. The masters of the dark spawn, “arch-demons”,  are in a sense kindred of the dragon lords in
that they are both the product of the fade and the world they inhabit—but a
world, and a fade far different from that of the dragon lords. In the end they
found themselves imprisoned by the arch-demons within their dark city while
these malevolent beings took possession of and corrupted hosts of the dragon
lords on this plane. The arch-demons (who now essentially ruled the Tevinter
Imperrium)  then began bringing over
their minions to posses humans hosts and set about a war of conquest to seize
control of this plane. They in turn met resistance from the occupants of this
world. The uncorrupted dragon-lord Andraste  taking a central role in this battle (Flemeth
was notable absent during the proceedings).  While they were eventually victorious in defeating
the possessed dragon-lords and their armies, Andraste was unwilling to give up
on her compatriots trapped on the other side of the fade. So instead of
destroying all remains of the corrupted dragon-lords and thus severing all ties
with this world (and thus hope for their rescue) she had their hearts sealed within
vessels and hired dwarves to hide them deep into the dark roads. For this
treachery she herself was executed.

 The dark-spawn;
however, still had followers left on this side of the fade. They were few in
number but managed to reproduce by creating brood mothers to provide hosts for
other followers to cross over and inhabit. They then set about attempting to
free their masters. The "taint" is their connection to this other
world beyond the fade. The connection between these worlds can only be
permanently severed by either destroying all remaining corrupted dragon-lord
hosts or else freeing the souls of the dragon-lords from the dark city.

Morigan (actually Flemeth inhabiting Morigan's body—as she
secretly took possession of Morigan the moment her existing host was destroyed)
sought to free (at least one) of her dragon-lord brethren by restoring an
uncorrupted host. She hoped that by driving out the arch-demon the original dragon-lord
soul could return (not knowing they remained imprisoned within the dark city).
She is initially disappointed this being she created appeared to have an
ordinary human soul--though with extraordinary abilities (the protagonist for
the next story?).  Flemeth does not give
up hope, however, considering this at least a first step in restoring her kind.
She hopes that another pride demon from
the fade might be persuaded to eventually take up residence--once the host is
suitably mature of course (no pride demon would consent to living as an infant
or child).

Of course Flemeth has little interest in child rearing so is
more than happy to allow Morigan to resume control over her body to handle these
responsibilities.  Flemeth; however, does
remain eternally vigilant, and while Morigan (much to her own surprise) has
deep affection for her daughter she is unable to warn of Flemeth’s intentions
or of even Flemeth’s existence.
