I think if the Vanguard is going to close in on enemies so much, he might as well have a vibroblade or something...

Not that I'm saying shep should have one as an inventory item, but maybe he could pull it out and shank/bash someone with it instead of his ELBOW-FACE routine.
EDIT: He has armor upgrades and research upgrades that improve his melee potency, so it is obvious Bioware supported the use of at least SOME close combat. Also note that close combat techniques are useful because shields don't defend against snapped necks and stab wounds.

If Bioware can have SWORDS in Star Wars KOTOR, and excuse it by saying that personal shielding technology has recently brought back the return of melee fighting, they can give Shepard a few more moves.
Kudos to smudboy for suggesting the using enemies as cover thing. Would be so awesome for me.

SWEET! I had no clue that there was a 5th one being made. You, sir, have just made my day!
Woohoo!
Oh **** my eyes just melted from the awesomeness. No words... no words to describe...
Battletech books were basically what got me into science fiction. I still play the original MechCommander from time to time. I've never liked any other giant-robot universe, or giant-robot battles, but that trailer just moved something in my heart.

In Drew's recent book he talked about mass effect shields working against high velocity objects. I dont like the idea of using swords in ME though...

in Dune melee weapons were popular because shields were mostly able to stop incoming fire from projectile weapons. Physically you could touch someone in mass effect even if they had shields. In that theory (keep in mind its a theory!) physical weapons can bypass shields in Mass Effect.

Ha ha, indeed! The Battletech universe was the first sci-fi game my dad introduced to me, and my love for it has not faded. If I had the books and materials right now, I'd play it old school with the paper and pen game. I'm that pumped!
Every other saturday we play mechwarrior, when we get to the mech combat section we either pen and pape(we have a giant table and lots of hex maps)r it or use Megamek which is one of the most awesome free games i have ever got. I am playing an Aerospace fighter but Megamek is a bit shaky when you are atacking ground units with your fighter.(They only shoot back if your movement ended within your range instead of anyone you flew over. ) Still I was also able to sqeeze a firestarter into my build so I run around with that on the ground maps.
I can't find the footage but they showed some Mechwarior 5 Alpha a while back. It had freakin awesome scenes of Aerospace combat, and meks marching on the bottom a lake to get to there target, and other awesomeness.
My friends 6 year old is doing a better job than me at painting Battletech minis, it kinds pisses me off. I got 30 years on the kid and I can't do it half as well as him.

Melee weapons in Mass Effect would be stupid. This is not Star Wars, this is Mass Effect.
In terms of a sword or hammer it would be stupid, but I would like to have a knife or something that you could use instead of just punching an enemy. And a biotically-charged punch for vangards/adepts would fit perfectly - Liara used it in the comics, why can't we use it in game?

As for the MGS type CQC, that works in MGS because you are supposed to sneak and get past the guards quietly. ME is not and should not be a sneaking game. PERIOD.
If BW did every half assed idea this forum has to offer, ME would have absolutely nothing unique, it would only copy every game since pack-man (who am I kidding, most of the frat boy xbloxers don't know that there are games BEFORE xblox).

Considering Kasumi has a melee-range attack, its not entirely implausible for them to implement some melee specific powers/animations for Shepard as well. I think the Republic Commando arm blade fits perfectly actually (for those that played the game).
Only problem with the wrist blade in RC is that it's way over povered. Or rather that the guns are way, way, way too underpowered. The wrist blade is the only easy kill in the game and that is just wrong.

I was thinking of the same thing too, I'd live to see something like that in ME3.

I've taken a quick peek at the link though. Looks awesome. I'll definitly be exploring that more tomorrow when I should have more free time. Thanks for dropping it.

A race that was raped by the salarians and a psycich ants, is that REALLY your best answer in melee?
Krogan can charge because their ridiculous regen rate, and rachni are just little more intelligent than ants... Not very good examples of über melee skilz in my book.

As does Shepard. He has his elbow punch. That's realistic type of melee attack and all the game needs. That doesn't mean he should use an energy sword or a scottish claymore or any other melee weapon.
If you really want swords there are gazillion medieval RPGs that have more than enough swords.

See, I disagree.
While I do believe that swords and the like would be very out of place, and that it would not be wise to go overboard, Shepard is an elite commando, and a field operative. I expect him to be able to fight with combat tactics when enemies close in, as they do very often.
I expect an elite commando to be able to fight and manipulate CQC by using enemies as shields, grappling, removing enemies of their weapons, kicking them, dropping them, whatever. Preferrably in combination with biotics.

Ok, you kinda missed my point. Having simple CQC that compliments the shooting is OK. Turning Shepard a cyberninjapirate is not. Punching and kicking yes, dropping them, with limitations, yes, removing their weapon, maybe with heavy limitations. Grapling means you ****ed up and you are fighting for your life, so no. And using enemies as shields hell no, there are way too many stupid things with this one (weapon penetration etc.).
The MGS series is based on steath, so it's realistic that it has heavy CQC (from Snake Eater on). Don't get me wrong I love MGS series. ME series on the other hand is not based on stealth and it should not be. So implementing a CQC system like MGS just would not work.
