Sten is the stalest personality imaginable and adds nothing to Dragon Age whatsoever.  His one to two word responses get under my skin, and he looks like a tan white guy with white cornrows.  He knows nothing about the Qunari or their homeland. He may very well be the worst concept for a party member in BioWare history, challenged only by Juhani of KOTOR and Jack of ME2. I asked him to leave on the first mission with him.

Sten is borderline abusive. I'm not sure why Morrigan gets such grief about being a **** while Sten is such a colossal douchbag.

Exactly, I mentioned to Sten that I want him to go, but then changed my mind. He said "I wonder why you even bother to speak." I then said that's it, get this tool outta here.

I didn't hate any of the Origins ones. Sten just never felt fully realized to me. However, playing Awakening, I got the feeling that Justice was everything I'd wanted Sten to be - love him. As for party members, the only one I can't endure now is Velanna. Oghren - I know if I tried, stuck with him, he'll have his good side again. I just haven't done it yet. But if you take him to the Urn/Guardian confessional, he's quite poignant. (I watched someone do that last night - really touching)

What are you talking about? Sten is AWESOME.

He has wit. He has personality. You just need to get his approval high enough. And he does have a lot to say once you do his quest.

Ya, he's sort of like Oghren in that you really have to dig to get to know him. Admittedly, for the most part, I didn't care to know either. I only pried into Oghren (yes, that was gross) when I learned he'd be my companion in Awakening. I don't adore either - they don't touch my favorites, but they have good points.

For Sten, if you take him with you on your first trip to the Mage Tower - say the right dialogue to the snarky templar guard on the dock, then you get a priceless conversation with Sten. (cookies/theft -all good)

* Warden: "Tell me about the qunari."

* Sten: "No."

* Warden: "Well, that wasn't what I expected to hear."

* Sten: "Get used to disappointment. People are not simple. They cannot be defined for easy reference in the manner of: 'the elves are a lithe, pointy-eared people who excel at poverty.'"

Sten is one of the better characters.

I can't stand how Sten complains every time I accept a side quest. I try to keep 'ole frankenstein around, but he gets on my nerves so much!

I like Sten. Don't like the Qun. Conflicting. I like mages.

He has an interesting point of view on things. Also, the quote that mrfoo1 brought up was one of my favorite Sten quotes, funny because I didn't expect that at first and quite true.

Sten is awesome. If you think he's boring or has too little to say, you didn't understand him at all.

Also, "he looks like a tan white guy with cornrows"? As opposed to what? You realise he's not meant to be black, right?

Have you ever taken Sten to the Fade? Oh lord, if you do, save right before and go through all his dialogue there. I found it quite touching really. It makes him such a sadder character for me.

I just did that and noted something interesting.  At one point my Warden asks him why the Fade Qunari refer to him as "The Sten."  So Sten must be a title rather than his name.  I think he is a great character and I love the line where he admits you've earned his respect and says that if the time comes (Qunari invasion) he will not seek you out on the battlefield.  I wish I could have responded, "I will seek you out. One of us will die honorably, by the hand of a worthy foe."

But then, I like or at least respect all of the companions (even Loghain) except Oghren.  So of course, who comes back in Awakening?  Sigh.

Zevran knows this and asks him about it, but doesn't get much out of him (surprise, surprise!).

I love Sten.  I don't need sycophants, I need battle companions.

A while back one of the writers said that the title "Sten" is like the equivalent of "Sarge".

He has a lot more to say on his "hidden dialogues."  I got those after some 6 or 7 full playthroughs, and I was breathless.  "Sten is actually talking...!!"  Although in the best one of those, about parenting, you end up staring at each other for a few turns and I was sure it was going badly.  Then, bam, Sten approves +26 or something crazy like that.

At that point, it was love.

Sten is a character you have to take with you to appreciate, for good and for ill. Yes, he has trouble grasping that you're in an RPG and therefore can't go from Point A to Point Be without a bajillion detours. He eventually opens up to the PC and he's surprisingly hilarious at several points. I can see why Shale develops a bit of a crush.

Looks like Bioware made a successful character to me.

His interactions and character progression between a female warden = awesome.  <3 Sten

Um, yes? How many white guys have you seen with cornrows in real life?

Hahaha I know how that feels! I remember the first initiated conversation I had with him in camp, and all the while I was estimating how much negative approval I was going to get because it was going so horribly. Lo and behold, +19. Priceless. xD

It's hard to gain Sten's approval, since every time you do any bonus quests he says "There are no darkspawn to kill here."  And then "Sten Disapproves: -10" The point of his character is that he's depressed and has no personality.  The problem is that BioWare went overboard and crossed the threshold of Sten being a complete douchebag.

Not everyone could put you to sleep with their voice, but Sten accomplises that nicely.
